Maybe someone can correct this: In the section "Hit singles" is the entry 2005 - Roots .... . But if you click on the link it takes you to page about an album of 1996. 1996, 2005 which is correct?

I think both. Sepultura recorded it in '96 and Soulfly re-recorded it in '05. I think. - MightyMoose22

"Roots Bloody Roots" was originally released by Sepultura (Max Cavalera's old band) on the album Roots in 1996. A live version performed by Soulfly was released as a single in 2005 to promote their live DVD The Song Remains Insane. Broodwich 5:32 PM, 26 October 2005

Tribe EP

Videography

Someone has the DVD Roadrage 2006? I need the name of director for Soulfly's music videos (mainly to "Carved Inside"). The same for "Innerspirit", that can be found on the special edition CD/DVD of Conquer. Regards, Cannibaloki 06:28, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Genre

Heavy Metal

In the infobox it says they are Alternative/heavy Metal yet in the article proper it says they are Nu Metal. I personally think the infobox is the correct but I don't want to change it because when I changed the system of a down page someone reported me for vandalism! Can we talk about it a bit as I think that both can't be right. Davard

Now it just says heavy metal in the article which is right. I don't clasify them at all nu metal, but I guess some do so it should be listed, as it is, in the infobox.

They briefly incorporated the "nu-metal" sound into some of their music, but they're not a nu-metal band. It was a genre they experimented with, and they've since moved on. They're first and foremost a heavy metal band with elements of thrash, nu-metal, and several other sub-genres. VietGrant 09:50, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

All of these guys who keep deleting the mention of heavy metal in the opening sentence simply don't get it. Every genre they keep replacing it with are subgenres of heavy metal. Death Metal

since it says that the second album "Primitive" was very nu-metal influenced and that "fans of the band" were slightly uncomfortable with this I am assuming that the first album was a different genre altogether? perhaps a mention of the style of the first album would be helpful for the article.

i'm sure they belong more to death metal than to heavy or nu metal. soulfly sounds like sepultura and sepultura is death metal. Max Cavalera is a death metal singer and the rest plays in death metal style. (double bass drumming etc.)

Max Cavalera intially sang in a death metal style but took up a more coherent and thrash metal styled vocal for Beneath the Remains and after. As for genre they are nowhere near close to Death Metal in any respect. They're more of a Nu-Metal/Heavy Metal band. Easiest classification is Alternative Metal since they also include a lot of different instruments.

Alternative Metal

Ok I found heavy metal and thrash metal as tags in genre box, these I have removed. Soulfly obviously have got thrash metal influences from Max Cavelera gaving been in Sepultura but that as far as it goes this band is not thrash metal. As for heavy metal, this tag normally means the traditional form of metal which obviously don't apply to Soulfy. I believe that nu-metal and alt. metal should definitely be kept. Although I've never been happy with the tag of alt. metal as this seems to say very little about a bands genre. Ok lets stop on Alternative Metal in tag and "elements of thrash metal and nu-metal" in article. Soulfly is alt. metal band definetely but some of their albums are biased to nu-metal (s/t, especially Primitive, which is not a bad album - its great album IMHO - by the way) or to thrash (Prophecy, especially Dark Ages which is terrific album as well). 195.131.158.69 20:03 29 March 2007 (UTC)

I think we should take four genres in the infobox: Alternative metal,Thrash Metal,Nu Metal(earlier),Groove Metal(recent). I know that Soulfly isn't a real thrash metal band nor nu metal band. Lineup

Chino Moreno

Third paragraph regarding Chino Moreno fails to mention that Chino also contributed vocals to "First Commandment" from the first album.

Current line-up

It should be mentioned HOW the new line-up, Prophecy onward came about. Max fired Roy, and Mikey and Marcello quit the band in protest - he did not, "recruit a whole new line-up". Also, Ellefson isn't really a "former" member - he's more in the vein of a guest bassist on Prophecy and Dark Ages.

Origin

It's not, in my opinion, entirely accurate to call Soulfly a Brazilian band. This particular group was formed in Arizona after Max Cavalera had been a resident of the Phoenix area (and the United States) for several years. Apart from Max and Marcello Diaz all members of Soulfly have been American. Soulfly continues to be based in the Phoenix area and Max is by this point a U.S. Citizen. But the core band upon formation had Max, Jackson Brandeira, Cello Dias, and Roy Mayorga, All except Mayorga are Brazilian, and Mayorga is of South American descent. So they were a Brazilian band at the start, lineup changes may have made them more American but you can't deny that they did form as a Brazilian band.VampireKilla (talk) 20:19, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Is Metal Observer a reliable source for this article?

[1] The section on the noticedboard is here. It's not conclusive, but nevertheless, users were supporting it, and no one seemed to be disputing it. It fits the criteria: it's published (note that "published" does not just mean "in print") and it isn't user-submitted or anonymous. It has writing and editorial staff. This qualifies it as a "professional review site", and this must count for something. It's not a perfect source by any means, but there's more than just "perfect sources" and "not reliable at all" sources. Prophaniti (talk) 11:31, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

It seems to me that the issue is not so much whether Metal Observer can ever be considered a reliable source. In the absence of any other sources, I think Metal Observer could probably be used to support the notability of an otherwise questionable article, for example. I think the concern here is whether it's appropriate to use Metal Observer to describe Soulfly as a groove metal or thrash metal band. In this instance, it has to kept in mind that there are many, many sources on Soulfly, and many of these are more credible than Metal Observer. The relevant question here is whether Metal Observer's genre description could be a considered a fringe theory. Aryder779 (talk) 16:27, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

If there were plenty of other sources to be used, and MO was the only one calling them groove metal or thrash metal, then indeed, it could be dismissed (at the very least from the infobox) as a minority view not to be given undue weight. However, the problem is there aren't "many, many sources on Soulfly". I see two on their genre in the article so far, and both are by the same author. So in truth, we really only have one.
