slavery

edit

I just did some cleanup: merging the text more, adding references to other wikipedia entries, etc. Such is far from complete and I haven't consulted any of the cited sources, much less Michael Pasquier's Fathers on the Frontier: French Missionaries and the Roman Catholic Priesthood in the United States, 1789-1870 published in 2009 by Oxford University Press, which I just found out about and haven't tried to order via inter-library-loan.

I clicked on this link hoping to learn this missionary bishop's stance on slavery, which was permitted to French settlers (who were grandfathered in that practice by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787), but which was not allowed (and increasingly less tolerated) in the new states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, despite considerable controversy citing slaveholding in St. Louis as well as Kentucky. I suspect there was one (or several) Catholic missionaries who helped defeat various proposals to expand slavery northward. In particular I was recently researching what became the first Illinois constitution in 1818 as well as a defeated referendum for a Constitutional Convention in 1824. However, Badin was physically in France at the time, and I can't quickly find the article about the Russian aristocrat who converted to Catholicism and who supposedly is also now being considered for sainthood (whose talk page I edited about a similar Eastern shore connection and this issue maybe a year ago).

I'm somewhat surprised at the lack of scholarship on the topic--the only book I've found thus far and just a couple of weeks ago), was about Black Catholics and written by a benedictine in the 1970s (whose title I used as a reflink that day because I couldn't check it out). It documents how slavery and slaveholding was very controversial within the U.S. Catholic hierarchy in the first half of the 1800s. Of course, they also had to deal with the Know-Nothings and antiCatholicism, which presumably this bishop dealt with and which I hope didn't cause his death.Jweaver28 (talk) 13:20, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
