Prior to the coming of the Portuguese, bananas were never cooked but eaten raw. edit

This is unsourced and doubtful. The Portuguese may have introduced flour and batter, but that doesn't mean banana was always eaten raw prior to the coming of Portuguese. Steaming, boiling, roasting, are also common ways of cooking a banana. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.71.170.249 (talk) 07:09, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The whole section seems pretty unlikely to me. Flour is as old as bread and noodles are. Since none of this is referenced, I'll clean it up. 76.10.128.192 (talk) 08:37, 23 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Origin of pisang goreng edit

Is there any proof that pisang goreng originated from Indonesia?Zulfadli51 (talk) 11:48, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

No. A nationalistic editor has been changing food articles to reflect his/her point of view. I wouldn't be surprised if banana is changed to claim that Indonesians invented it, or are at least responsible for the shape... Regards Davidelit (Talk) 15:41, 31 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Move proposal edit

Given that this snack in eaten throughout Southeast Asia and beyond, would it be better to move this article to Fried banana (which is currently a redirect to this article)? This might also reduce the nationalist and/or WP:PEACOCK edits. It is also in agreement with WP:ENGLISH. The names it is known by in different countries (pisang goreng, maruya, banana cue, toron or bakabana), could still be listed. Any thoughts? Davidelit (Talk) 03:27, 1 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Comment A better name in English would be fried banana fritters. robertsky (talk) 16:10, 1 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Can we conclude per the below Merge discussion, that Pisang goreng will first have to be moved to Banana fritter? Or do we decide at this Move proposal for that? The Merge discussion closure by Polyamorph did not mention a Move, however Turaids tagged Banana fritter for deletion with the reason that Pisang goreng has to be moved there. I can delete Banana fritter, and perform the move, but wanted to check here first. Jay (talk) 08:40, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jay: Since Banana fritter is currently a redirect, there is nothing to merge in to. So yes it is essentially a straight move. But the consensus was that the content needs to be merged with other content on Fried bananas in different cultures at the Banana fritter location. Polyamorph (talk) 08:56, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
So by it is essentially a straight move, are you supporting Turaids' suggestion of first Moving Pisang goreng to Banana fritter? And then merging the others into it? And is this a personal vote, or as the closer of the merge discussion? Jay (talk) 10:05, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
As the closer of the merge proposal, first moving Pisang goreng to Banana fritter and then merging others to it seems to be an appropriate way of completing the merge as discussed. Apologies for not making this clear in my close. Polyamorph (talk) 10:24, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jay: Actually no. Sorry. While Pisang goreng lists different varieties, there is no reason to choose this article over the others as the "main" article. All what needs doing all these individual articles merged into a new article at Banana fritter. Polyamorph (talk) 10:33, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I have removed the deletion notice from Banana fritter. The contents can directly be merged to it after removing the redirect statement. Jay (talk) 10:42, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, can you complete the Merge discussion close process by modifying the tags at the affected articles. See WP:MERGECLOSE. Jay (talk) 10:42, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I will complete this. Thanks Polyamorph (talk) 10:48, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jay: all completed - Turaids helped with an additional Cambodian dish. Note I closed the merge discussion after seeing the CSD tag and noticing it hadn't done, otherwise I would have done all the appropriate merge steps earlier. In any case all done now and thanks for your help. Polyamorph (talk) 15:35, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
You did the actual merges! Thanks for that.  I thought the merge tags would be fixed now as part of the close, and the actual merges will happen over a course of time. Jay (talk) 16:08, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge of Kluai khaek and Pazham pori into Pisang goreng edit

The result of this discussion was Merge all in to a new article at Banana fritter. Polyamorph (talk) 08:03, 16 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

They are the same thing Spudlace (talk) 00:33, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Merge to Plantain Banana fritters or something universally understood: Google News searches show more results for pisang goreng, so it seems a more common term than the others, but the world is a big place, so we should be open to the possibility that fried breaded plantains may have a more popular or more universally understood name like "plantain fritters". (See comments by Robertsky and Davidelit above. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 01:07, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Merge to Banana fritter. Despite what is currently stated in the lead, bananas, not the more specific term plantains, are widely recognised as the ingredient of the dish. Robertsky's above suggestion fried banana fritters is a bit redundant, since fritters are always fried. The singular form should be used per the Article Titles policy (cf. Potato chip, Chicken nugget, etc.) Either merging here and then renaming (the current redirect can be tagged as G6) or merging all into a new article at the target would be fine. --Paul_012 (talk) 17:34, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Merge to Banana fritter as a common English name. --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 02:14, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Merge to Banana fritter, not pisang goreng which is a linguistically specific name. Haleth (talk) 10:42, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Merge to Banana fritter and mention all the known traditional names there.--Joseph 💬 07:45, 6 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose, keep separate. Pazham pori is a very popular snack in the entire state of Kerala, it is even synonymous with the word "snack". Similar to Vada (food), Appam, etc, it has its own cultural significance as well. - Vis M (talk) 11:01, 21 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
