Requested merge at Talk:1966-67 Singaporean by-elections

edit

I have opened a merge-to request of both 1966 and 1967 by-election pages into 1966-77 Singaporean by-elections because both pages are of commonly themed. The discussion is open from here, so feel free to discuss. Thanks. Sculture65 (talk) 17:32, 11 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Is there a merge discussion somewhere, or did you want to discuss here? CMD (talk) 09:27, 12 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Honestly speaking, this is the first time I launched a discussion on merger, so I got no idea... If you want, discuss can be done at said page. Thanks for clarifying. Sculture65 (talk) 12:26, 12 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

For MSM sources, please be aware of "updates" by MSM itself

edit

Case in point :

Original article (via WBM) - Focus is on Vivian Balakrishnan filing report with Meta + Shanmugam's views

Current article (after being updated) - Focus is on Masagos Zulkifli and Shanmugam (Balakrishnan filing report is gone)

Note that the url is vivian-balakrishnan-facebook-calvin-cheng-mfa-unauthorised-activity-meta-investigating-5039441, meaning original article is hijacked to remove Balakrishnan report to Meta and use Masagos' remarks to replace it.

If using the original article for sourcing, need to set the URL-status to "deviated" (I might be wrong in choice, either dead or deviated) (see Template:Cite web). It will set the archived link as the main link, the current link to "Archived from the original" similar to a dead link. ~ JASWE (talk) 03:35, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Elections special meetup/gathering

edit

For this weekend, I am opening up HackerspaceSG for anyone interested to come together and improve on the articles related to the 2025 Singaporean general election. These include political parties, biographies of politicians (or related persons), constituencies, etc.

For this meetup, it stretches across this weekend's two afternoons, 26-27 April, 2.30pm-6.30pm. Guidance will be provided on the editing interface as needed. If there's enough participants for the day, I can get pizza (or other food in).

If there are anyone wanting to work on Malay Wikipedia as well, do join in! There is also a related activity (https://w.wiki/DqKA) to translate/update the articles on Malay Wikipedia as well. While I don't know the language, I will still be able guide you through the finer details of the translation process as I do translate articles into Chinese Wikipedia myself. I have assurance that most, if not all, of the English articles we are touching are notable enough for Malay Wikipedia.

Do indicate your interest here: Wikipedia:Meetup/Singapore 20. You need not come on both days, and can indicate which day you will be present. – robertsky (talk) 07:52, 24 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

14 parliament seat image

edit

While we move to the next parliament, the 14th Parliament of Singapore has File:2020 Singapore election results.svg showing 93 seats, whereas the table below it shows 95, as it includes the two NCMPs. The file used to show the previous parliament at the 2025 Singaporean general election article, File:14th Parliament of Singapore - 20220308.svg, shows the NCMPs (although it's caption comes from a different date to the image). Which one is preferable? Including the NCMPs makes more sense to me. CMD (talk) 14:55, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

National Day Parade project (SG60 collaboration effort (2025 National Day Parade article))

edit

Paging @Justanothersgwikieditor and @Robertsky, and to the Wikiproject, I am writing this talk topic on setting up pages for each of the Singapore NDP every year under inspiration of 2024 Summer Olympics opening ceremony. I also considering on drafting or writing a NDP article in honor of the SG60 celebrations, the idea is that to give this a special event and understand what the parade bring some unique twists each year in the ceremony, along with critical reception and aftermath, among others. But I can't do this alone, so we work as a team. I see if the project team would agree on. Sculture65 (talk) 02:19, 28 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Sculture65 we can do it as an editathon as well. However, we would have to gather sources as NDP articles are prone to be merged into the main NDP article. It would be good to have sources not from Singapore's mainstream media. – robertsky (talk) 02:43, 28 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think doing it will be fine, but archives and YouTube and certain newspapers are also good sources. Will plan a time to draft a template soon. Sculture65 (talk) 03:52, 28 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Request for editorial assistance: Draft on Surya Devan

edit

Hello, I’m requesting neutral editor feedback or possible adoption for a draft article about Surya Devan, a Singapore-based media strategist and healthcare advocate.

The original draft was deleted under CSD G11. I have acknowledged the COI and am now working only in user space (once restored) to ensure neutrality and policy compliance.

If anyone is willing to review or advise, your help would be appreciated. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by SuryaDevanE (talkcontribs) 19:51, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have reviewed the deleted content, and would advise that you are better off not writing it when you have been unblocked. If you still want to do so, do not use those sources in your rewrite. They are either not of significant coverage of yourself or are most likely paid articles, press release articles, or promotional articles in others' eyes. See also WP:AUTOBIO for why we don't encourage people to write about themselves. – robertsky (talk) 04:58, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Reliability of CNA (channelnewsasia)

edit

I noticed that CNA (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/) is not listed on the perennial sources page. I was wondering where it would fall. Would it be in the same category as The Straits Times, which is listed as generally reliable except on topics involving Singaporean politics? Personally, I think that's where they fall too, similar to Al Jazeera, but I’d like to hear what more experienced editors think, especially those familiar with using official Singaporean news sources or state-funded media on Wikipedia. MordukhovichAleakin (talk) 19:55, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I recommend that to be raised at the noticeboard of WP:RSN. But right now, I'm putting up a general discussion on the use of Singapore-based sources.--ZKang123 (talk · contribs) 03:23, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Discussion on Singapore-based sources

edit

A discussion of Singapore-based sources is up on WP:RSN. I welcome regular editors on WP:SG for further comments.--ZKang123 (talk · contribs) 03:25, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm surprised to learn that many of the articles you've written over the years about Singapore's MRT network, several of which were even promoted as good or featured articles, are now facing intense scrutiny because the sources are seen as too closely tied to the government. It's a disappointing situation. While I agree that caution is warranted when it comes to politically sensitive coverage from Singaporean media, I don't see why that same level of skepticism should apply to something as routine and non-political as public transport. Several Cabinet articles I observed recently have the deputies (Ministers of State and Parliamentary Secretaries removed on the basis that they aren't part of the "actual" Cabinet. But those leaders are still part of the Government, so do we create a separate article for it? Or do we reinstate it? Because when I look at Malaysia's example (they use "Deputy Ministers" to refer to the same thing), they are also included. Hope for a debate on this. TheGreatSG'rean (talk) 09:03, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

You should refer to the discussion here: [1].--ZKang123 (talk · contribs) 09:11, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@TheGreatSG'rean, Cabinet of Singapore only shows the Ministers which should includes Second Ministers (our version of deputy Minister if not mistaken) and acting Ministers. On the government website, only the beforementioned are shown. As per MoS and PS section of the Government of Singapore, such office holders are not regarded as members of the Cabinet hence my decision to remove it per WP:COATRACK. Taking a random article Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Malaysia), The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs is a non-Malaysian cabinet position serving as deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (emphasis mine). For Singapore, theMinisters of State and Parliamentary Secretaries are definitely part of the executive branch of the Government.
I am open to other standalone articles if you wish to describe the whole executive branch for each iteration. ~ JASWE (talk) 09:26, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I would be open to seeing parallel articles about Ministers of State and Parliamentary Secretaries (aka Junior Leaders). The question is, how do we format it cos they are part of the Government, just not Cabinet. TheGreatSG'rean (talk) 09:58, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps article title as the Executive branch of Singapore Government, list the prime minister down to the PS aka the executive branch (note MPs and President are the legislative branch) ~ JASWE (talk) 11:15, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Won't the list need to be updated? Or do we put it in the same Cabinet article (that we are actually avoiding)? TheGreatSG'rean (talk) 11:40, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
This new article can transclude the Cabinet section so we can avoid doing double work and then MoS and PS in other sections.
If you want to have historical records, we can still transclude like the main article. ~ JASWE (talk) 11:56, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
So something like Executive Branch then "List of Juniors in 1st Cabinet", "2nd" and so on until the "2nd Lawrence Wong leadership"? TheGreatSG'rean (talk) 12:01, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am thinking more of like one article per cabinet. Like executive branch of the government for LW 2nd cabinet, etc etc.
We can do the listing like you suggested as a single list page also. Can always start off as your suggestions. If the formatting or presentation do not work well, we can split it out as wrll. ~ JASWE (talk) 13:25, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Alrighty! We can start with such a restructuring by restoring the deputies we split away from. TheGreatSG'rean (talk) 19:27, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
