Broken Hill or Kabwe

edit

We need to establish whether the town was called Broken Hill or Kabwe at the time of his birth. Consensus says we should use the name as it was then. The Observer ref uses the name Broken Hill, but that may not be accurate. After all, the same article claimed his family left Zambia because of political unrest, and that turned out to be incorrect. I'm tempted to think the name change coincided with independence, but that may not necessarily be the case. Any thoughts? Paul MacDermott (talk) 09:32, 9 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

From the Kabwe article: "The name was changed to Kabwe in 1966, shortly after independence." This book agrees, but then, that could be Wikipedia generating its own citations. Other book results also seem to suggest it was renamed Kabwe around the time of independence; e.g. this and this ("in 1964, Northern Rhodesia gained independence as Zambia, and Broken Hill became Kabwe"). The Observer citation simply says that it was once known as Broken Hill, not that it would have been named Broken Hill when he was born. It's neat historical trivia, but not particularly pertinent to the article, so I've fixed it. Lewis Collard! (lol, internet) 16:08, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, and I've fixed the one in the infobox. In the light of the above I feel it was somewhat unnecessary for them to provide the town's former name. After all, it's open to misinterpretation. It would be like saying someone was born in Istanbul, formerly known as Constantinople. True, but not relevant to the subject. Paul MacDermott (talk) 17:39, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Steve Bunce

edit

I've added a quote from Steve Bunce's article in The Independent that sums what happened up as a tragic accident. I don't know whether there's a better quote we can use from the piece, but I'll leave it open. Feel free to add something else if you feel it is better. Cheers Paul MacDermott (talk) 10:11, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

That works well. And thanks for the excellent work on the article, for which you seem to be pretty much single-handedly responsible. Lewis Collard! (lol, internet) 11:43, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, just added a couple of other things, about his Repton career and the reaction of Tom Bowen, but I think I've done as much as I can for now. I'll keep looking though. Paul MacDermott (talk) 13:26, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
