Presidential Run?

This article discusses Weicker being courted for a possible presidential run. He was born in France, people! Anyone involved enough in politics to run a presidential campaign (even the Reform party) should know that he (like Schwarzenegger and Granholm) could not run. I want to see sources for this. While he was born in Paris, his parents were American, making him eligible to run for president. His father was an executive with an American company with offices in France. John McCain wasn't born in the United States either (I believe he was born in Panama), but he is still able to be President.

John McCain was born in Panama when it was part of the United States that is why he can run. Lowell on the other hand was not born on US controled soil so no he cannot run for President. Gang14 (talk) 19:43, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Not so fast: While the Constitution does provide that a president must be a natural born citizen, the first Congress of the United States in 1790 passed legislation stating: "The children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond the sea, or outside the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born citizens of the United States." However, the Naturalization Act of 1795 repealed the Act of 1790 and removed the language explicitly stating that the children of US citizens are natural-born citizens. As such, it is inconclusive whether Weicker was eligible for the office of President.

On the main point: Weicker was certainly a Presidential candidate in 1979. Anyone who was an adult then would know that. More specifically: he explicitly announced his candidacy on March 12, 1979 in Hartford.

On the side point: The Constitution says "natural born citizen." No court has ever ruled what that means, and whether it includes (i) people born in the United States, (ii) people who are children of American citizens or (iii) both. The balance of informed opinion tips toward the last. Since the adoption of the 14th Amendment (about 80 years after the Constitutional provision on presidential eligibility), those born in the United States have a Constitutional claim to citizenship; others are citizens as a matter of ordinary laws. Just to note a couple egregious errors above: Panama was not, and has never been "part of the United States." Moreover, the notion of "US controlled soil" is neither a Constitutional nor a statutory one. People who were born in Bavaria or Tokyo in 1947 are not, by virture of that, US citizens. Various statutes have conferred US citizenship on people born in various places, to various parents: including a statute that applied to the Panama Canal Zone, which was adopted in ... 1937 (McCain was born in 1936). Lamont endorsement

I note that even if Lamont is running 46% behind Lieberman, that isn't appropriate information to put into an article about Wiecker, unless (as was not done, and I doubt can be done) there is going to be a section on Weicker's proclivity to endorse candidates likely to lose, or to endorse opponents to colleagues, or something else where this (otherwise irrelevant) factoid would actually be relevant. Inaccuracy About Weicker's Grandfather and ER Squibb & Sons

According to the Bristol-Meyer Squibb website, ER Squibb was not Weicker's grandfather - Theodore Weicker was.
