Boxer diesel

This boxer engine was used for only one year in North America, after it became apparent that the efficiency gained from a diesel engine was not worth the severe lack of performance.

While I don't have access to a VW Vanagon Diesel, as I had understood it, the engine was a slant-mounted inline-4 engine closely related to the VW Rabbit 1.6D engines. And, with the substitution of a few Vanagon parts (oil sump, oil pickup, bell housing, etc), the Rabbit Diesel engines can be adapted to the Vanagon.--Keelec (talk) 09:23, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

According to the USA market section in ETKA, the CS diesel engine was installed in both the Camper and the Vanagon from August 1981 to June (Camper) or July (Van) 1982. But it was NOT a boxer - it was actually an inline-four engine. I can't find any evidence of a boxer diesel, so I delete that bit. HTH. 78.32.143.113 (talk) 13:25, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

CR, JK, ME

Recommendation on the entry for ID code- CR, JK, ME 1.6 litre D, 40 kilowatts (54 PS; 54 hp) — 1980-1992 Volkswagen Rabbit, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Jetta I owned one of these...a 1981 Rabbit L Diesel, USA market. It had its original owners literature with it, and I distinctly recall that it was rated as 52HP (which is close to 53 PS). In any event, PS and HP shouldn't be the same at this power level. If you look at the lead paragraphs of the list of discontinued Volkswagen Group diesel engines article, it states that all VWAG engines are initially DIN-rated, and that this figure is always 'established' in the kilowatt (kW) unit of measurement - so the kW figure will always be taken as the unit of 'reference'. Double-checking USA specific section of ETKA again, it specifically states 40kW and 54hp for the US and Canadian CR, JK and ME codes. Maybe the discrepancy is either in the SAE conversion (most likely), or (less likely) the wikipedia conversion template - dont forget the wiki conversion templates all utilse a 'rounding' error, and on lower value numbers, this can sometimes give a parity figure.
