Lock Names

The names of the locks on the boards provided by the Canal & River Trust at each lock, refer to these as Hertford Union Top Lock, Hertford Union Middle Lock and Hertford Union Bottom Lock.

While referring to them as 'Old Ford Locks' collectively might be historically correct (although I cannot find a source for this), it may also be misleading.

Unfortunately, my simply viewing the lock name plates is primary research, so I would not edit the page myself. I'd appreciate the input of other editors on what would be the best way to proceed.

I've conducted further research and the locks seem to go unnamed on most maps (or are named solely as 'Top Lock', 'Middle Lock', 'Bottom Lock'.) I'm lead to believe that the source for the lock names may be Lewis A. Edwards, (1985), Inland Waterways of Great Britain, 6th Ed, Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, ISBN 0-85288-081-2. I do not currently have a copy of that to check.

CanalPlanAC which I used as a reference when I expanded this section used the name 'Old Ford' exclusively at the time, as shown in this archive [1] from 2011. Why they have changed that I do not know. Perhaps it should be viewed as a not very reliable reference, at least for historical purposes.Derek Andrews (talk) 19:21, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Ah, thanks that makes sense now. I changed the names at canalplan.eu. As a navigational resource it was important to have the current names used there, although the 'Old Ford' names were kept as aliases. I've yet to be able to find a reliable source for the 'Old Ford' names, although I'm told the Edwards volume is where it came from for the canalplan database. Try [2]. "Hertford Union Canal....Junction with Main Line to:....Top of Old Ford Three Locks (Nos. 1 , 2 and 3)". So, a slightly different variant, specifying three locks. This might have been in use at the time to distinguish between the other locks of similar name in the area. I'm not sure how much authority this has of course; it could just be something Edwards or his source made up, or what was commonly in use at that time. Probably the best you can do is use the current 'official' names and make a note of this alternative reference. Derek Andrews (talk) 19:53, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

That's incredibly helpful. Thank you. Yes, it does imply a name for the group of locks, but is the sole reference for those names. Given the potential for confusion with the Old Ford Locks on the River Lee and the Old Ford Lock on the Regent's Canal I can really only infer that these were given the description only by way of their being in the Old Ford part of London. If it ever was used, the name has certainly fallen into disuse now. I'll consider what to do and perhaps edit this section in a few days time. Aegidian (talk) 21:47, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
