I'm unaware of Wikipedia's standards, but is it appropriate to link to stopshuler.com on Heath Shuler's Wikipedia entry? 23:59, 17 February 2006 {unsigned|68.39.174.238}}

It sounds like this has been resolved, but for general info: No, it's not. That's a blog; blogs are not considered verifiable sources (because anyone can write anything they want, basically) except for special cases (for example, TPMMuckracker.com employs at least two full-time journalists). So citing a blog as a source is unacceptable. If something is newsworthy, it will have been covered by a reputable source; if it can't be found in a reputable source, it doens't go in wikipedia, whether it's true or not (and how would one tell?) Election

edit

Why was the entry on Shuler's victory over Charles Taylor edited out? I live in NC, and I was watching Taylor when he rolled over on channel 13. It's official information that doesn't lean one way or the other. What gives?PratzStrike 04:16, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Degree?

edit

I'm a tennessee graduate, and there has always been a substantial question among tennessee graduates as to whether Mr. Shuler actually ever received a college degree. The article, however, seems to indicate that he has. I would like to find out a definitive answer to this question. 04:11, 18 August 2006 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mel.b (talkcontribs)

I've edited the article to add degree information. That information comes from the Shuler campaign site,[1] which means it's not 100% guaranteed to be true. However, it would be incredibly stupid of his campaign to make such a claim if it were not true. Universities fully disclose whether a person was a student or not, and what degree they received and when; normally this only takes a phone call. (It's how potential employers verify applicant claims - there are thousands of calls every day, I'm sure.)
I know of one politician who got a lot of negative publicity - and a public reprimand - for claiming (for a while) a degree that she didn't have: Jean Schmidt. I note that as an example of how easy it is to check such claims, and the danger of making such a claim when it isn't true. John Broughton 13:26, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
The "substantial question" about his graduation has been answered. He did indeed graduate from the university of tennessee with a degree in psychology in 2001. I'm new to wikipedia, so forgive me if this posting is not correctly signed.Mel.b 16:54, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Moderate?

edit
Shuler is a relatively moderate Democrat

What does this mean? I'm not American, so it's not at all obvious to me; could we please have some specific issues and where Mr Shuler stands on them? Loganberry (Talk) 12:22, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Heh; thanks to the anon editor who added just the details I was looking for one minute after I posted the above! Loganberry (Talk) 13:22, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I may very well be wrong, but my understanding was that he is quite conservative on social issues, but a pretty strong progressive on economic issues, like free trade, healthcare, etc. If this is accurate, I think the article should reflect where his conservatism lies, after all, William Jennings Bryan was a social conservative, but no one would call him "relatively moderate"Rbl 17:48, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
He was so "moderate" as a Democrat that in the 2002 Tennessee gubernatorial election he endorsed Republican Congressman Van Hilleary, who ran as a hard-core conservative on most issues, and invited his fellow University of Tennessee alumni to his Grainger County, Tennessee estate for a barbecue on the weekend of a University of Tennessee home game in the October before the election. If someone has a published reference to this, it belongs in the article. 2600:1004:B107:EEED:5CE4:BDAE:25D5:DA6 (talk) 02:18, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Football Career

edit

I don't know anything about him as a politician, but the description of his NFL career, basically just attributes his lack of success in the NFL to how bad the teams he was on were. I don't know whether a PR guy wrote that, but it doesn't read like a description of an unsuccessful NFL career but rather an indictment of the teams. Someone who is more familiar with his football career might give a little more context.Mikelj 21:53, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mason Status

edit

Shuler is a freemason according to the North Carolina Mason, a public newsletter about masonic activity in North Carolina. As masonry is a important civic club and the article has personal aspects of his life in it (where he lives, his wife, etc.), do not remove it. I am tired of pompous editors who go around reverting changes for no reason. AJourney (talk) 00:56, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The same user continues to revert edits about this, although I have provided citations to the Grand Lodge of North Carolina's newsletter which specifically mentions this. The article will be online for viewing as a back issue in the next few months when the next issue comes out. However, the Grand Lodge of North Carolina's newsletter is a public document, and while it is not online yet, that should not prohibit this from being cited as a source.AJourney (talk) 02:50, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Don't like the intro...

edit

... but I don't feel like changing it either. "is an American football player" is wrong; he WAS a player but isn't now. Someone should change this. Timneu22 (talk) 17:40, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Asheville Tea Party Target

edit

The Asheville Tea Party has held numerous events to raise funds for Schuler's removal from office. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipietime (talkcontribs) 04:46, 27 March 2010 (UTC) Wikipietime (talk) 04:47, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Political Positions

edit

We need a section on political positions. Any thoughts about what to add? Acropolis-smopolis (talk) 00:11, 10 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Actually, most members of congress don't have a "political positions" section in their wikipedia pages. So, we don't "need" one. But it could be a nice addition, if it's thoughtfully structured and avoids cherrypicking and coatracking. Arbor8 (talk) 16:25, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Time to get this underway, since he has announced the lobbying role with Duke Energy. I would initiate but am under a self restraint order from previous attempts to expand the article base. It seems that anything presented will be able to be faulted as politically "Charged","cherrypicking" or "coatracking"; it's politics. The energy sector is poised for a upheaval and this might very well be the quarterback. --Wikipietime (talk) 15:45, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Post Political Life - Lobbyist

edit

This section, Post Political, is going to see a rapid expansion; assuming, he moves the ball down the field as hired to do. I will prudently try to keep an accounting of his record, alliances, etc., and link to the lobbyist monitoring sites. The Energy bowl is the game of the decade and Schuler as QB will be a thriller. --Wikipietime (talk) 15:24, 29 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Due for an update or else Duke needs to get a refund for this lobbyist.Wikipietime (talk) 01:38, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

This a good, solid article, but needs some citation on his political career - a reader would need some verified quotes. Also, it's not enough to say he's a 'moderate Democrat' - give examples of his stances on policies (with independent quotes) and leave the reader to decide for themselves.
