Sound Samples edit

It'd be nice if someone could muster sound samples of Lapland owl to Wikimedia Commons. I mean, at least in the northern parts of the world, the sound has been called 'the lowest bird call in nature'. It's a really eerie basso sound. 84.251.156.33 14:52, 28 December 2006 (UTC) Matti Nuortio, FinlandReply

New "Habitat" section needed. edit

Could someone who knows something about the Great Grey Owl's habitat please do a write-up on it, whats there now is nothing but some totally biased, unfounded opinion about how timber management and ranching are a "threat" to the species, its not helpful at all and should be in a different category entirely. Outdated distribution map edit

According to the distribution map this species doesn't breed in Sweden, which I know for a fact that it does, backed up by Svensson, L. et al (2010) Birds of Europe Princeton Field Guides. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oskila (talkcontribs) 10:08, 10 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The range map is inaccurate. The southwestern corner of the range in Eurasia is in Estonia where the species, although not numerous, is nevertheless encountered every year. See this link http://www.ohtuleht.ee/index.aspx?id=326827 for a photo of Strix nebulosa nesting in Estonia in 2009. --Vihelik (talk) 16:52, 29 April 2009 (UTC) mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.184.44.222 (talk) 19:42, 17 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Agreed! I have just seen one in Skane, southern Sweden. Can someone who knows how to do this update the map to include Sweden please? 2.64.137.134 (talk) 15:05, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I've been down this road a few times with innacuarate range maps. For the moment I agree that just removing it is the best course of action. For an improved, more accurate map I believe Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop would be the place to ask. The article text already reflects that they are in Sweden so this isn't a particualerly big ask, but it can take quite some time to actually get a volunteer to create the map you ask for. Inconsistencies edit

"Threats" and "Feeding" sections contain conflicting information about what predators adult individuals might face. FinnHK (talk) 22:45, 17 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

The great gray owl is a very large owl, documented as the world's largest species of owl by length . It is also called Phantom of the North , cinereous owl , spectral owl,Lapland owl ,spruce owl, bearded owl, and sooty owl. They live in Canada. And they eat voles, pocket gophers, mice, moles, chipmunk and lemming. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.224.132.166 (talk) 02:07, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Spelling edit

There are 42 occurrences of "grey" and 22 of "gray". The title of the article uses "grey". When the article was created it used "grey". Therefore, this spelling should be continued throughout. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 13:27, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Further, the range of the bird is significantly greater in Canada than in the United States. Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style § National varieties of English I will add a flag to alert future editors. The guide recommends a redirect page for alternative spellings, so I will attempt to create that or simply put the alternative spelling in a footnote. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 13:38, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Also, the article about the color grey is given as an example of a title which uses a particular variety of English. That article uses British spelling and simply mentions the alternative spelling. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 13:50, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Next, is to correct use of 'gray' in the body. To be done tomorrow. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 14:10, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Of the 23 instances of "gray" only three of those were in the text, and one was giving the alternate spelling. Have changed both other occurrences. The rest should be left as is, so as not to break links or change source article titles. Loopy30 (talk) 14:14, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
