Public Life edit

This article alludes to a libel suit against Saturday Night magazine, but there is no reference to the actual magazine or the content that triggered the suit. Isabel Vincent's original article should be a source at least, not just reports of his legal victory.

"The fact that he organized the former group at the age of 12 made him famous as a young social activist of remarkable precociousness." that needs cleaned up. DesertSky85451 19:28, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

This whole article reads like Kielburger's PR team wrote it. Why is there no Controversies section? The intertwined nature of the 'charities' with the private business interests gives off a very bad smell. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.64.50.54 (talk) 12:53, 20 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Claims of him being the youngest ever graduate of the York MBA program were cited by a Canadian Encyclopedia article, which, in turn, cites the wikipedia page. Removed as considered a poor citation. Barkman (talk) 16:02, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Original research edit

While Kielburger is quite probably notable enough for an article (assuming the claims in the article are true) it looks like he himself has created the article and has, not unreasonably for someone perhaps unfamiliar with Wikipedia, made claims that are original research and thus which fail verifiability. Nobel Peace Prize nomination edit

  • Free The Children's many accomplishments in the areas of education, alternative income, health care, water and sanitation provision and peacebuilding have earned three Nobel Peace Prize nominations, ...

Being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize is an honor, but it is not official or even prestigious. Any national legislator or about a third of the university professors in the world can make a nomination, and there have been as many as 140 some years. Nominators are requested to keep their nominations secret, so it's only those wishing publicity who make announcements, and more often it is impossible to verify. I see no reason to keep it. No offense to the subject, this is a general Nobel Peace Prize "nominees" issue. -Will Beback · · 09:30, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

many accomplishments? edit

Some of the "many accomplishments" of "free the children" should be described (with references if possible) rather than merely asserted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.247.255.243 (talk) 14:12, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Degrassi: The Next Generation Season 7 Episode 20 - Ladies Night edit

I've added this link to provide a ref, removing the citation need tag. I understand this is not a text-based ref, but you can watch the actual episode online. As I live in Canada, it is available, but I'm not sure if it can be seen outside of Canada. Maybe someone in another country can try the link and see if it works for them.CubBC (talk) 02:43, 1 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Edit request from 142.150.161.176, 18 May 2011 edit

Under education section, there is no mention of Kielburger's attendance at U of T, or any honourary degrees he has received from that institution. Edit request:

Kielburger is set to receive an honorary degree at the University of Toronto convocation ceremonies in Spring 2011 in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to society along with other outstanding scholars, innovative thinkers, humanitarians, dedicated public servants and leading philanthropists. President David Naylor of the university said “These extraordinary people ─ public servants, social activists, philanthropists, researchers, teachers, writers, leaders - have asked difficult questions, offered new ways of looking at the world and made significant contributions to Canada and the world. They reflect the values and strengths of the University of Toronto and will be a tremendous inspiration to our graduating students.” Kielburger, who graduated from U of T in 2006, and his brother Marc will receive honorary doctor of laws degrees June 8 at 2 p.m. [1]

Not done, for the moment. The non-quote part of the addition "...recognition of his extraordinary contributions to society..." sounds like puffery. While we can Naylor's quotation, our own prose must be maintain a neutral, encyclopedic tone. Feel free to reword your submission and resubmit it. How does a 12 year old start a business edit

The article is like an advertising piece. What I wrote IS REALLY JUST ASKING SOME QUESTIONS THAT PEOPLE CAN ASK OR CONTRIBUTE TO. I provide examples and thought out information, that missing in the discussion, and that totally ignored on this marketed biography.

Why is editor Ground Zero (possible MARKETER/ PUBLIC RELATIONS) person deleting a discussion Question on A talk page. ITS A talk page. Only a coward deletes information on a discussion page. Why is Ground Zero censoring information on a TALK / DISCUSSION PAGE

This is the information that was deleted by Ground Zero.

What they are doing is very good and its a good aim. But why do we need to play SHEEP to the story his parents created.

hHow can a 12 year old create a business on their own. there is no acknowledgment. Are we tp belive that a 12 year old did this all by himself. Craig Kielburger's PARENTS started the business, and the BUSINESS they assisted him in starting while he was in university was a SOCIAL BUSINESS for their son.

Cant we ask ourselves how does a 12 year old goes about starting a business all by himself. A non profit organization is a business whatever way you want to look at it. Marketer/Public Relations person Ground Zero should know this.

What the media and everybody since the beginning want to ignore is that it might of been him wanting to do something about a cause, but its his WEALTHY PARENTS that that provided the push and organized the trips, and thats how he got started. Sorry but 12 year olds dont organize MONEY AND DRIVES and go on trips to other countries to disperse the stuff on their own.

If we follow the timeline...

By the time he was in the middle of High school his parents probably already this bisiness/ organization already thought out.

Implications of always a business since high school:

He probably never worked at regular job elsewhere because he bad his own business to go to. Throughout university he had a job at his business that his parents helped to create. Why cant we allowed ourselves to see the story as it really happened.

I dont know but i'm just guessing, the lawsuit against Saturday Night magazine...probably had something to do with their official "story".Starbwoy (talk) 21:47, 29 August 2013 (UTC)Starbwoy (talk) 22:51, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would like to add a section on Criticism.

I would like to ensure this section is not repeatedly deleted.

Martin Luther King III edit

Hello,

A few weeks ago I added information about the Kielburgers' participation in Martin Luther King III's Realizing the Dream initiative. After adding it to MLK III's article, I added it to Marc Kielburger, where there was shorter and less informative language based upon a press release, but a comntributor Bilorv said it was too long – "undue weight" – and restored the previous version.[1] Since that was the accepted version, I put that here.

Now that version has been removed because it is based upon a press release.[2] It seems then that there is some disageement about what the editorial standards should be. I agree with Dialectric that press releases should not be used as sources when mainstream media outlets have covered the situation in greater detail. Given the very public backing of the National Football League and Major League Baseball teams, and the fact that Craig Kielburger was interviewed, it seems relevant here.2601:547:1200:B3E0:D172:9A48:F805:5E52 (talk) 01:56, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

What's your relationship to the Kielburgers?
Press releases shouldn't be used as promotional sources about "philanthropy". I was fooled by the Globe and Mail host website at Marc Kielburger and didn't remember the connection when I discovered it here, but I've now removed the press release there. Possibly there is some usable content here from the news reports but due weight is still a concern: the news reports should be summarised. I want to know information that an independent journalist has assessed neutrally or discovered investigatively. At the moment it's not clear to me what the Kielburger's role is (have they provided money? Organised initiatives? Or are they just telling others, "you should do unpaid community service"?). Martin Luther King III#Realizing the Dream needs scrutiny too. Pinging Dialectric, who also made a revert. — Bilorv (talk) 15:15, 17 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wholeheartedly agree that press releases are not ideal, which is why I removed one from Marc Kielburger and replaced it with references to mainstream media You undid that change and restored the press release.
"I want to know information that an independent journalist has assessed neutrally or discovered investigatively" sounds like another way of saying, only if it's negative. That's what your overall tone suggests.
"Possibly there is some usable content here from the news reports but due weight is still a concern: the news reports should be summarised." Wait a minute, "possibly"? So you removed them without even reading them? Of course they were "summarized", or it would have been several pages long.
On the Kielburgers' role in Realizing the Dream and the partnership with the NFL and MLB, I'm just going off what it says in the pieces I'd linked. I agree that we could use more detail . Maybe you could help with that instead of squashing the discussion.2601:547:1902:FF70:B554:E37D:FC32:D8CC (talk) 20:37, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Amazing, it's 2024 and you're still at this. Last time I interacted with Bilorv, they were edit warring to maintain a disparaging editorialization. Something's negative, you want to keep it. Positive, you work to keep it out. It's obvious that you have an axe to grind against the subjects, which is exactly what WP:BLP is meant to prevent.
You keep saying paid editing, as if the proper response were to punish the Kielburger brothers by making their biographies negative. The better response is to adhere to Wikipedia policies, remain even-handed, and don't let your impulses knock you off track. If you can't handle that, there are plenty of other articles that need improvement where maybe it will be easier to maintain perspective.
A quick look on Google shows a number of legitimate news pieces about King, Realizing the Dream, and the Kielburgers besides the ones I see User:2601:547:1902:FF70:B554:E37D:FC32:D8CC included in their first edit. - Hard thoughtful work (talk) 01:18, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Uh, this suggestion to investigate Martin Luther King III is really inappropriate. We're just Wikipedia editors, not investigative journalists.

To the IP, your first version with the sources looks fine. I don't understand why it was reverted. You mention that there's an interview with Craig Kielburger in one of the pieces. If so—I'll take your word for it—including something from that instead of just a quote from MLK might improve the article. Judokitty (talk) 13:29, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
