Shouldn't there be a discussion of issues related to the Republic of the Philippines' Comelec? Maccess 07:06, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Isn't it José Melo since January 26, 2008 ? Lars 10:02, 13 February 2008 (UTC) Since Melo was not confirmed by the Senate COA, then PGMA re-submitted her appointment. It appears that the new appointment is ad interim, that is, Melo can assume office despite non-confirmation, but the reports are yet to be referenced.

Mystic Fire, Twin Ambushes and Collapse of Chair Benipayo

On the March 11, 2007 mystic fire which halved the seal of the COMELEC, now, after the ouster of Abalos, comes the OMEN: twin dire punishments for this so corrupt office: murder of Dalaig and ambush of his replacement today. This is what I had repeatedly written as WikiPedia curse by the dwarves under Psalm 109 as the sole way to ferret the truth. Cover-ups, circus, etc. will not satisfy the search for veritas. Philippine Commission on Elections → Commission on Elections (Philippines) – Quite simply, this body is called as "COMELEC" but I don't think that'll fly, so its official name is the "Commission on Elections", not "Philippine(s) Commission on Elections" or "Commission on Elections of the Philippines" or by any other name, so, as what's done on governmental bodies that adds a parenthetical country name, this should have been at "Commission on Elections (Philippines)"... which was the title until this was moved here for a flimsy reason. –HTD 06:56, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

• Support for "COMELEC" - In all honesty I actually wanted to move it to "COMELEC" as well but I didn't think it would last. The reason for moving was that parentheses are simply unnecessary when there is a clear name available. I did think about moving it to "Republic of the Philippines Commission on Elections" which is the title on their own banners but it is a cumbersome title. As a compromise I thought just "Philippines Commission on Elections" was a good title. Green Giant (talk) 16:28, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

We should drop the Philippines modifier

Commission on Elections redirects here. Why do we even need the modifier "(Philippines)"? Does any other country have a Commission on Elections or COMELEC? Is it an English speaking country? Is it as big as the Philippines? I think that simplicity is best. We should just drop the Commission on Elections. Alternatively, complying by WP:Commonname we could just use COMELEC. Article titles should be common names, not official names. For example, see the Big Dig for the Central Artery Tunnel project. --Bruce Hall (talk) 05:02, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Commission on Elections (Philippines) → Commission on Elections – The name should be the common name which is either "Commission on Elections" or "COMELEC". If the commission was exclusively known as COMELEC, then that would be the best title but per WP:ACRONYMTITLE, we should avoid acronyms where there is an alternative name that is equally used. I've decided not to move it — "Commission on Elections" is broad enough that it really needs to be a redirect to election commission. Is "Philippine Election Commission" an option? I've not checked their website, simply because it keeps giving me a "page cannot be found" message. Nyttend (talk) 21:59, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

I concur - except that most reliable sources in the Philippines in the English language use all capitals: Comelec. For example,the home page of the COMELEC website, accessed 28 January 2016, consistently uses the all upper case abbreviation of "COMELEC" rather than "Comelec". • Oppose The long form is also commonname, in fact all those sources cited use the full name on the first mention, and then the acronym after that. This is like the DepEd, OWWA, DSWD, NAPOLCOM and most other government agencies that people are generally aware of what they stand for.   • But we're not currently using the "full name" or the common name - hence the move request. Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources. US sources don't report much but other foreign sources like the BBC and Deutschewelle do - and they naturally use the common contraction of "COMELEC" - a bit like BBC itself (rather than British Broadcasting Corporation) or NASA (rather than National Aeronautics and Space Administration).
  • The category argument doesn't run either, since there is no discernible consistent naming pattern there. I really do think we should avoid being US-centric in our article names. Please remember that a re-direct will be left (in a similar way that there are re-directs from British Broadcasting Corporation or National Aeronautics and Space Administration)... Is COMELEC more like NATO or the BBC or is it more like the UN (United Nations) or the IMF (International Monetary Fund) or the Fed (Federal Reserve System)? Because of WP:PRECISE, because of clarity, because most looking for Wikipedia articles might be asking the question, "What is COMELEC?"
