Colin's crest edit

I think "Colin's crest" and the associated trophy should be mentioned in the article, but I'm not really sure under which section it would fit. For you that is unfamiliar with Colin's crest, it's a jump during the Swedish Rally made famous by Colin due to his spectacular long jumps, and which is now a memorial trophy given to the driver who makes the longest jump. --217.210.166.50 (talk) 22:26, 9 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Infobox nationality edit

Isnt it a bit bizarre that his nationality in the WRC infobox is Scottish? I realise that those of a nationalist persuasion get a bit heated under the collar about this sort of thing, but I thought the accepted norm for sports people (especially when using the infobox of the sport in question) was to use the nationality that they competed under? (eg Andy Murray: British, Dario Franchitti: British, David Coulthard: British, Paul DiResta: British and the same is true for a load of english sportspeople: Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Martin Brundle, Tim Henman). Strikes me as odd to make an exception for Colin beardybloke (talk) 20:33, 5 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you completely, but there was a huge edit war going on for a while after he died, and people would be constantly insisting on the nationality being Scottish for reasons I found illogical, so... there you have it, after me and others who agreed with me gave up on the whole thing, it ended up being Scottish. That's evidently just the way it's going to have to be with this particular article. MRacer (talk) 18:51, 6 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Looking through the history it appears the whole info box was deleted for a while, then someone finally reinstated it using 'Scottish' and I guess everybody was sick of messing with it. Some Scottish people get so wound up about stuff like this, nobody else really cares.--213.107.105.51 (talk) 17:41, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why doesn't this article contain findings from the inquiry into the helicopter crash edit

I find it unfortunate that more detail is not included about the circumstances of this man's death.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-14803595

The inquiry found:

  • he was not currently holding a valid pilots licence
  • he had not asked permission of the parents of the six year old child before taking him on the flight
  • he engaged in low-level flying when it was unnecessary and unsafe to do so
  • as a private pilot he lacked the training, experience and requirement to perform the actions he undertook

The inquiry demonstrates that his reckless actions caused not only his own death but the deaths of three other people including two children. In any other circumstance this would be considered relevant for a notable person.

It is mentioned, read the last paragraph of the section headed "Investigation". Britmax (talk) 23:23, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Family's doubt about investigation findings edit

Would it be worthwhile adding McRae's family's doubts about the investigation findings? Based on the various reports I've been reading, Jimmy McRae believes there was some other reason for his son's death other than pilot fault and that Colin was skilled enough to be doing what he was doing 1 2 3 CiphriusKane (talk) 10:25, 13 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

No - there is no reason to attempt to whitewash the causes of the accident - note that one of the sources is irrelevant as it dates from the immediate aftermath of the accident, years before the investigation was published, and Jimmy McRae only seems to say that Colin was a good pilot and the causes are unknown.Nigel Ish (talk) 20:34, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

WRC record win breakers edit

I removed the growing list of drivers who had beaten McRae's 25-win WRC record as a matter of future proofing. In my opinion it should just be limited to the first person who broke McRae's record rather than every single racer who has gained 26 WRC wins, because otherwise it'll just end up becoming a list of drivers that has zero bearing on the article. Are we happy to leave it as just Sainz or are we wanting to restore the full list? CiphriusKane (talk) 09:40, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@CiphriusKane: Agree on the future-proofing, Sainz is notable in context, the rest less so.... Lirazelf (talk) 19:59, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Scottish v British edit

Just going to post this analysis of the 92 sources listed:

Scottish: 39
British: 17
Neither: 29
Unchecked: Source 6, source 16, source 19, source 20, source 21, source 27

For clarity, where the source only references a specific rally or team rather than nationality (such as this, I count it as neither, as to claim it indicates nationality is synthesis IMO.

Furthermore, I'd take this being as him self identifying as Scottish. Therefore, per the MOS he should be listed as Scottish rather than British CiphriusKane (talk) 09:22, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Britmax Can ye please explain what ye mean by Not the way we do things around here? By my understanding, the way "things [are] done around here" is that, when it come to UK nationals, how they self-identify and are referred to in the media determines whether they're British or English/Welsh/Scottsh etc CiphriusKane (talk) 19:09, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Look at several of the articles on Scottish racing drivers: the form "a British driver from Scotland" was agreed by consensus some time ago as a solution to the idea that they are all racing under British licences, as Scottish licences do not exist. If you wish to change that consensus, you should raise the matter on the talk page of one of the articles or on that of the various project pages with an interest, which can be accessed via the banners on the talk pages of these articles. Britmax (talk) 19:54, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Care to link to that discussion? Secondly, If you wish to change that consensus, you should raise the matter on the talk page of one of the articles what do ye think this is? CiphriusKane (talk) 09:17, 28 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Well Scottish licences do not exist, so that's immaterial. F1 driver Ralph Firman raced under an Irish licence despite not being remotely Irish (and is described as such in his Wikipedia article). F1 driver Bertrand Gachot raced under a Belgian licence despite neither being born and raised in Luxembourg to French and German parents. Racing licences are just something you have to get to race which has to be from a country. I'm sure if Ewan McGregor, Sean Connery, Billy Connolly, Gerard Butler, James McAvoy, Alasdair Gray, Muriel Spark, Peter Capaldi, Hugh MacDiarmid, Sorley MacLean, Limmy & Denis Law had to apply for licences to do what they do they'd have ended up with British licences too. ~~~~ Jamieli (talk) 01:12, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
