Type edit

Cocker spaniels are a type of spaniel with a chubby body and short stubby legs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.137.56.215 (talk) 12:23, 21 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

The referent edit

It says the term refers to these two modern breeds, period. But it also refers to the historical landrace, the lowercase "cocker spaniel". Chrisrus (talk) 19:55, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Article name edit

Why it is 'Cocker Spaniel' and not 'Cocker spaniel' per WP:CAPS and WP:Fauna name. In the prose also why not 'cocker spaniel'? Regards, SunCreator (talk) 20:01, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

It should only be capitalized when in the name of an officially recognized breed, such as American Cocker Spaniel. Before there were Cocker Spaniels, there were cocking or cocker spaniels. Welsh Cocker puppies are still classified as cockers if they are more suited to that type of hunting, according to these articles. Chrisrus (talk) 04:26, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

The breed formerly known as Welsh Cockers are now all Welsh Springer Spaniels. However, as in their own countries both the American and English Cocker Spaniels are known simply as Cocker Spaniel, the article title is so capitalised. Miyagawa (talk) 20:05, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Is this article is about cocker spaniels or Cocker Spaniels? Both, of course, and there is a gray area, but if you are in the UK maybe you mean by "Cocker Spaniel" the English Cocker Spaniel, it should be capitalized. If a hunter finds that his Welsh Springer Spaniel is a good cocker because he cocks well, you could say his usage is no longer common, but it's well precedented and in my opinion still proper not to capitalize it if it is clearly used in that, what for you and me, is an old-fashioned way, and he says the dog is a cocker spaniel, no caps. Chrisrus (talk) 20:37, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I misunderstood before. Yes, if th job the dog is doing is being a cocker spaniel, then no caps. Only caps when you're referring to the specific breed. Miyagawa (talk) 12:48, 14 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Personality and Care edit

I suggest a tab for personality and care be added to this article since Cocker spaniels can be considered pets. Perhaps a tab on how Cocker Spaniels are great show dogs if trained well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jjn24 (talkcontribs) 16:52, 9 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

3 Article Critiques edit

Hello all,

Under-Representation - I feel the "In Popular Culture" heading is under-represented. The Cocker Spaniel has been owned my many public figures such as; President Nixon, George Clooney and Oprah. They are also the dog in the famous Coppertone ad.

Missing Photo - The English Cocker Spaniel has and adult and puppy photo in its section but the American Cocker Spaniel only has an adult photo.

Dated Material - Popularity stats are approaching 10 years old. Maybe and updated poll or a link to dog popularity throughout the years would be beneficial

Thank you for reading my critiques-MosesYup (talk) 04:49, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
