2016 spring training competition edit

On February 26, User:Muboshgu added text about the Brewers' spring training competition for the major-league team's starting center field job. For reasons I still don' understand, Muboshgu included the fact that Phillips was one of nine players trying out for the job but didn't include the fact that, given Phillips's status as a bad major-league team's top prospect with zero major-league experience, he had no realistic chance at the job. (For another source on that, see the article that was used to source the nine-man competition information.)

We've gone back and forth with me wondering why, given how trivial this information is, it was inserted in the first place. I also wondered why it wasn't updated given that, predictably, Phillips didn't get the job. Muboshgu's responses were typical for a seasoned Wikipedia editor: no cites of relevant policy or guidelines, condescending reverts without substantial discussion, and an awareness, on my part, that this is a dispute I'm not going to win because I'm trying to undo an edit whose author refuses to even consider whether or not it's unnecessary.

As far as actual substance goes, see here for a clangingly obvious answer to the question "Why wouldn't we document a player's career in a biography" from this edit summary. I never said we shouldn't document a player's career in a biography and if Moboshgu could, in a reply to this, apologize and retract the implication that I did, I'd appreciate it.

Including this impossibly minor, guaranteed-irrelevant fact about Phillips's career isn't in accordance with the Trivia sections guideline of the Manual of Style. Wondering about "document[ing] a player's career in a biography" is in direct opposition to plain language in the MOS that says "Items that...lack real importance can be removed in most cases." And as literally always happens when I ask a question that isn't particularly answerable, I asked a question that, because an honest answer would require surrendering some ground, got ignored. I'll ask it again: doesn't including the information about Phillips losing the nine-player competition mean we have to go through every single baseball player's article and insert every single call-up and send-down? And I'm also wondering if it's my responsibility to correct the outdated information on Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Keon Broxton, Michael Reed, Rymer Liriano, and Shane Peterson. It's strange that it's apparently still up to me to fix errors I didn't make. RunnyAmiga (talk) 16:52, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
The "policy" is WP:BLP. Information needs to meet three criteria: (1) neutral point of view (NPOV); (2) Verifiability (V); (3) No original research (NOR). How does spring training info as written fail this? This is a biography and we document what has happened involving this person. The Brewers held a wide open competition, and it's to Phillips' credit that he was included in it, which is why it's relevant. Further I don't understand why you're deleting that he currently plays for Biloxi. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:56, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

My opinion here.. the information is relevant but it needs greater context... It should say that he was a non roster invitee to spring training and that he was given a chance to compete for the open center field position but that he didnt win the job and he was reassigned to minor league camp and later assigned to Biloxi. I agree with that. I didn't add enough context. Good news is there's WP:NODEADLINE here. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:11, 14 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Brett Phillips (baseball)Brett Phillips – I think per WP:TWODABS and WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, this is the primary topic. So far this year, the baseball player has 99% of the views. In fact, the DAB page and the rugby player have about the same amount of views. The baseball player is also a well-known media personality with a big World Series moment, so I don't think he'll be soon forgotten. Nohomersryan (talk) 01:52, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
