Biber No.105

edit

This Biber held by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport.[13] It is in a working condition and believed to be the only fully operational World War 2 submarine in existence.

Can it be confirmed it's fully operational? I can easily imagine it being restored to the point where it can move on the surface. But restoring it so it can submerge would be a vastly more complex and expensive task. Also, would it be even permitted to dive such a flawed and potentially dangerous craft?Catsmeat (talk) 09:25, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The diving bit isn't really a problem as long as you don't go too deep although the craft may have been tethered. The articles states that: "After being inspected by a former submarine pilot in the German Navy's wartime Kriegsmarine division, the vessel carried out a test dive in a dock at the Naval Base."

I'd argue that surface operation would be more of a problem as its the CO poisoning from engine that is most likely to kill you. My suspicion is that any running would have been done on the electric motor.©Geni 19:45, 9 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
The episode of Salvage Squad in question is on youtube You can see footage of them diving the thing from about 10m to 14m. Impressive! Catsmeat (talk) 22:59, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Looks like all electric operation though.©Geni 00:38, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
