Requested move 12 December 2021 edit

The result of the move request was: no consensus. Overall I'm closing this as premature. Before we have more RSes to go off of, these arguments are largely based on primary sources. We have extremely limited secondary sourcing here, which makes any further claims tenuous at best, and such arguments appear to not be very persuasive to the participants responding here. I'm leaving the door open for re-litigating this if/when we have more secondary sourcing. Normally this would be a relist, but as closers we are told to not relist a second time unless there is reason to believe a more full consensus could be easily established based on the current circumstances. I do not believe that is the case here. Cheers (closed by non-admin page mover) — Shibbolethink ( ) 17:07, 26 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Alan Wake IIAlan Wake 2 – per rationale below

The title of this article should be changed to "Alan Wake 2" as the Roman number is only stylised; same situation with Red Dead Redemption 2. Epic Games Store, IGN, GameSpot, Polygon, among others, refer the game as Alan Wake 2 rather than Alan Wake II. Allistayrian (talk) 10:22, 11 December 2021 (UTC) — Relisting.  ASUKITE 20:56, 19 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

The title card in the promo clearly showed "II", and the difference between numerical and roman numbers is not simply a stylization (eg Final Fantasy VII). --Masem (t) 19:11, 11 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think Allistayrian have a point. The game's official website seems to use "2" rather than "II". The store page from Epic also used "2" as well. I would support renaming the article. OceanHok (talk) 19:38, 11 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Support - A quick google search shows that Alan Wake 2 is the common name and should be the article title. TheDeviantPro (talk) 13:14, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose at this point. It would be better to assess the state of this closer/shortly after the game's release to see if there is more standardization on the arabic or roman numerals. At this early stage , with little information out there, we should be giving weight to how it appears. But once we see development and review information, that will be a better judgement call. --Masem (t) 13:18, 14 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose; Agree with Masem. Plus it's technically correct, as with the two Metal Gear Solid V titles, which are often referred to using numbers rather than numerals but haven't been changed because of that. --ProtoDrake (talk) 16:20, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose. The situation with an unreleased game is dynamic and unpredictable. Wait until after release, and meantime the redirect is fine. Andrewa (talk) 17:06, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Literally all the marketing and articles about the game use the number. This seems like another "logo uses the Roman numeral for stylistic effect", like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. That makes me feel like the number should be the default unless confirmed otherwise.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 17:54, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
    • As the game is unreleased, there will be no reviews as of yet, so the articles will be based on the marketing materials and they will all be primary sources. There is some controversy over how relevant these are. Andrewa (talk) 04:47, 19 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: rather use the actual name of the game, which the logo on the article shows is II.Muur (talk) 21:19, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I want to stress that so far, most of the secondary sources used Alan Wake 2 rather than II. That would mean that for now, Alan Wake 2 is the common name and should be moved there. I'd argue that after the game's release if RS starts to refer it as Alan Wake II, then we can move the article back to the current title. OceanHok (talk) 11:42, 19 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Request move 25 May 2023 edit

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Request move from Alan Wake II to Alan Wake 2 All storefronts, including Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store list the game as "Alan Wake 2", not "Alan Wake II". The game's website and PlayStation Blog also use the title "Alan Wake 2", with a standard numeral. The II in the title is clearly a logo stylization, similarly to Red Dead Redemption 2 and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Zohariko1234 (talk) 11:12, 25 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Update: the Community Manager of Remedy has specifically clarified the title of the game is Alan Wake 2, not Alan Wake II (Tweet) Zohariko1234 (talk) 11:39, 25 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Alan Wake IIAlan Wake 2 – Now that the game has been fully released, I suggest revisiting this discussion once again. It seems that most of the press refer to the game as Alan Wake 2 instead of Alan Wake II, thus making it the WP:COMMMONNAME. OceanHok (talk) 09:44, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Support. Sources seem to prefer "2" to "II". Rreagan007 (talk) 16:31, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Game title in-game even is using roman numerals. --Masem (t) 16:41, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Masem: - But this has nothing to do with its common name. It is not its official title at all. Most of the secondary sources call it "Alan Wake 2"; Both developer Remedy and publisher Epic called it "Alan Wake 2"; The game's " own FAQ and press materials also called it "Alan Wake 2". I don't see how this is different from cases like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Hitman 3, which uses roman numerals as part of its title stylization, but it is neither its official title nor its common name. OceanHok (talk) 18:54, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per @Masem. Killuminator (talk) 17:26, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. OceanHok makes the case pretty clear: The official (printed) name is "Alan Wake 2", which is merely stylized with a Roman numeral in the artwork. Red Dead Redemption 2 already set this precedent; WP:OFFICIALNAME applies. A cursory Google search also shows the non-stylized name to be the WP:COMMONNAME. IceWelder [] 21:04, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support As per OceanHok. The store, the website and press releases all use "2". Timeless Days (talk · contribs) 21:12, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. WP:COMMONNAME looks convincing from a Google of the title. OceanHok's examples, including Remedy themselves typing out 'Alan Wake 2' as well. amisnaru (talk) 02:34, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Kranitoko (talk) 09:56, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Support as per OceanHok. If we end up doing this, then Alan Wake II could maybe be repurposed as a redirect should people actually still type it this way. Nicole. Oh, she's elegantly clandestine... 15:05, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per all of the above. As noted, not only do most articles refer to it as Alan Wake 2, but so do the official game, developer, and publisher sites. The roman numeral does seem to be a stylistic choice for the title graphic only. —Torchiest talkedits 00:50, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
