Which English to use?

I strongly disagree to force American English Only regulation to apply for editing Wikipedia. The English orthography is not established yet. English has not an academy such as Académie français. Traditionally, English has been formed by popular dictionaries and grammar books.

English should not controlled by American authority. Using Kachru's model, English is expanding beyond the Inner Circle (UK, US, etc.), and Englishes form the Outer Circle (the former British colonies) and the Expanded Circle (the rest of the world). A global language is not allowed to be regulated by its native/first language speakers. The more outside people the language, the more the language varies beyond the inside's expectations.

English other than American are obliged Americans to accept.

Question about revert

Hello,

First of all, I'm confused as to why you reverted the article to an earlier version. How was the article "too expanded to be appropriate"? What exactly is "appropriate" here? I believe that much of the information that was previously featured in the article was definitely appropriate and important to anyone wanting to know the history of aiko's career.

Secondly, I don't believe anyone here is forcing an "American English Only regulation". Quite on the contrary, actually; British English is overused on Wikipedia. I don't think there's anything wrong with using British English when the article concerns someone or something that is decidedly British, like Wikipedia's entry on the BBC, for example. However, I think it borders on ridiculous when you have articles of places, things, or especially people who are definitely American that are filled with British spellings of words. People who speak other versions of English than American are obliged to accept American English at these times, just as speakers of American English are obliged to accept other versions of English when appropriate.

That brings me to the use of American English in the aiko article--is it justified? Difficult to say, especially since aiko herself is neither American nor British. What I would do in this situation is try to assess the linguistic preferences of the majority of the people who would view this article and take it from there. In my opinion, the majority of English speakers accessing this article for information on the Japanese pop singer would speak American English, as it is my belief that there are simply more Japanese pop fans who speak American English than British English; additionally, many of her overseas musical influences are American. Therefore, it is my belief that this article would best serve the majority of its readers by being written using American English. Kamezuki 05:01, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

221.170.187.26, you miss the idea behind my changes. Read Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#National_varieties_of_English. The aiko article was predominantly written in American English before your edit. Therefore we should stay with American English. BTW, I see no reason for your revert, so I'm going to revert the article to the version just before your revert. --Tkh 11:33, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

Whichever it is written in initially it should stay. In addition, I work by the rule, American English for USA, New World and Japanese topics, British English for British and European topics. clean-up

I have just re-arranged the sections to fit in with other articles. I moved some of the information to different section and re-formatted the text per MoS, a few of the sections were more trivia than anything else. With regards to the American/British English debate, I think the most important thing first and foremost is to get the article into something approaching English at all. This is pretty much done now, though the article still needs a lot of work, plus expansion on her biographical details, rather than just bulletpoints. A lot of the information is still fairly indecipherable, so I have left the "expert" tag on. I hope my edits haven't disturbed anybody, if they have please say here before just reverting, as that took me quite a while and I'd rather resolve any issues by discussion here first. Thanks. better known as aiko

The "better known as aiko" statement needs a reliable source. The source needs to say "she's best known as aiko, as opposed to Aiko Yanai", or words to that effect. Simply linking to something where she's identified as Aiko isn't enough. Re: her own website, it never even states her name as Aiko Yanai - it is simply Aiko. Again, for cdjapan, all albums are credited to Aiko. If there is an OR going on here, it is giving the last name of Yanai to this recording artist. Luminifer (talk) 14:50, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

allexperts.com definitely isn't a reliable source - it's an out-of-date copy of Wikipedia.

If she only uses the name Aiko, and never uses the name Aiko Yanai, you might want to look at WP:RM and nominate the article to be moved back to Aiko (singer). Assistance with singer's name

I believe that this article should address the fact that this singer is not known by her full name, "Aiko Yanai", but rather simply by "aiko". All of her releases reflect this, as well as web pages - most references to her full name actually seem to be clones of wikipedia pages (maybe we even need a reference to prove her name is Yanai?). I am having difficulty getting this change to be accepted on this page, so I wanted to request outside help, as I think I've done all I can personally do, but I didn't want the page to be left in what I believe is a misleading state. • Comment. I suppose a fairly neutral approach would be to change "better know as" to "also known as." I would suggest doing that (and also, in the lead sentence, taking her place and date of birth out of the parentheses enclosing her name in Kanji). More to the point, it might be very useful to ask at WikiProject Japan for an editor who reads Japanese (I don't, but I have found the editors at that project to be very helpful) to take a look at her official website, and verify that it refers to her simply as "aiko." Assuming that it does, I think that would settle it, and then requiring further sourcing would be completely unnecessary. --Tryptofish (talk) 17:00, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Requested move

Aiko Yanai → Aiko (singer) — Based on the consensus I see on this page, I feel that this page should be moved away from "Aiko Yanai", as really no one knows her by that name (in fact, there is not even any source on the page confirming that Yanai is her family name - it will need to get a CN - I also can't find any source for it on the web that doesn't seem to be a wikipedia clone). Page title: Aiko -> aiko?

I also live in Japan and can confirm that her name is written 100% of the time all in lowercase. Even in newspaper articles, or the listing for the national broadcaster's New Year's song contest, she is listed as "aiko", not "Aiko". Now that MediaWiki supports initial lowercase letters in article titles, why don't we move this article to its proper (lack of) capitalisation? Simon-in-sagamihara (talk) 07:55, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Expansion

Adding information

I definitely think this page could use an expansion. Aiko is a notable artist in Japan and in the j-pop genre and as such I think she deserves a more detailed article. Perhaps not necessarily as detailed as the Japanese page, but perhaps somewhere in between might be appropriate. My main justification for this is to provide access to information about the artist to those interested who might not be able to read the Japanese article.

Name

Also, in Japan it is undisputed that her name is stylized as "aiko". Sources include her official website, her official fan club, her albums, stores in Japan such as Book Off that sell her albums, Japanese news articles etc. Indeed, when searching just "aiko" on yahoo.co.jp the top results include her official page, her Japanese wikipedia page, her twitter page, and a YouTube video of her song Kabutomushi (カブトムシ) etc. Although having lived in Japan and seen all of this isn't a reliable source, I can definitely say that this information is certainly verifiable.

Japanese Article

I read the Japanese article for this page which has some interesting information but unfortunately the article lacks citations for some of its claims. One such interesting bit of info is that her official fan club Baby Peenats is apparently named after the comic strip peanuts as she is a fan of Snoopy from the comics and a dog lover in general (A brief Japanese biography of her mentions that she likes dogs as well as stating that her influences include KAN、Carol King、Jackson 5、Billy Joel、and Stevie Wonder). Unfortunately I haven't been able to verify this claim that the fan club is named after peanuts. Again, although potentially interesting, I admit that this might be unnecessarily detailed for the English page.

Guidance

Following the appropriate guidelines I would like to add some additional relevant information - primarily major events relating to best selling albums etc in her musical career, add her upcoming album Doushita tte Tsutaerarenai Kara (どうしたって伝えられないから) to her discography (I have yet to find an official translation for this title). I'm a little new to editing on Wikipedia so I would appreciate some guidance on what kind of information is appropriate to add with respect to notability. I think it would be nice if we could add a picture that doesn't violate any copyright laws. I noticed someone wrote that people had been adding pictures of an unrelated person. I am aware that most sources are only available in Japanese. From what I've understood, the general consensus is that these are acceptable sources when no English source is available.

Citations

I would like to help verify some of the claims made in this article so that the citation needed box can be removed. I would appreciate it if anybody would be willing to point out claims that need citations as I would be more than willing to look for sources to verify these claims and if no such sources exist suggest removing these claims of this living person.
