2018–19 NFC Championship Game → 2019 NFC Championship Game officiating controversy – The blown "pass interference" call is what made this game notable in the first place, so the title should reflect that. WuTang94 (talk) 17:14, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

This page seems to focus mostly on that one play in particular. Maybe we should rename it "2018-19 NFC Championship game officiating controversy" or "2019 Rams-Saints officiating controversy" (which I prefer), unless there is an official name for the play such as "No call". --WuTang94 (talk) 01:46, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
EDIT: Just for clarification, Agree would mean changing the title to "2019 NFC Championship game officiating controversy" and Oppose would mean the title would stay as "2018–19 NFC Championship game", which was the title when I opened this debate.--WuTang94 (talk) 16:31, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

• Oppose We should not have an article on an incident in a game, especially if there is no article for the game itself. The article probably needs to be rewritten. AIRcorn (talk) 07:29, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
  • Comment But then we have articles on incidents such as the Butt fumble, Fail Mary, Music City Miracle, and the Miracle in Miami which all focus on one play in particular rather than the entire game.     • Doesn't mean those are right. A play should not be come before the game itself. We have effectively put the cart before the horse. Many of those articles are formatted like a game article anyway. There may be WP:Split arguments on having an article on the play as well as a game one. Considering it is relatively recent and doesn't even have a common name it is too early to say whether it has enough impact to be individually notable anyway. • Agree I believe this article should be changed to either of the suggested titles as it originally was 2018 NFC Championship Game officiating controversy (should've been 19 or 18-19, but still about the single play), but was changed for whatever reason without any discussion.   • Oh... yeah, it's interesting that the page was already named that before, now that you pointed it out. Looking at the logs, it does look like someone changed it randomly without discussion. In my opinion the blown-call play was really the only notable part of this game that merits its own article, but let's get more opinions in here before making it official. --WuTang94 (talk) 20:24, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
• Oppose and improve article – Instead of renaming the article to have it centered on just the officiating controversy, it should be turned into an article that represents other NFC/AFC Championship Games on Wikipedia; take note of 1998 NFC Championship Game, a featured article.   Comment: This is what the NFL gets for now holding all its playoff games in a different calendar year than its regular season, and thus another thing to cause some of us Wikipedians headaches, as this article has been moved back and forth between "2018...", "2019..." and "2018–19...". Look at these two Google results:

  1. http://www.google.com/search?&q=1995+AFC+Championship+Game matches our current 1995 AFC Championship Game article: Colts vs. Steelers on January 1996 to determine the AFC champion for the 1995 season
  2. http://www.google.com/search?&q=1998+NFC+Championship+Game matches our current 1998 NFC Championship Game article: Falcons vs. Vikings on January 1999 to determine the NFC champion for the 1998 season

  And this naming contention (XXXX Championship Game = game played in January XXYY for the XXXX season) continues on subsequent Google searches (because as noted, NFL playoff games had been typically referred to with the year of their preceding season) until you get to the last few years. If we strictly follow a consistent naming convention here (see WP:NAMINGCRITERIA), the article we are discussing should be moved to 2018 NFC Championship Game: Rams vs. Saints played on January 2019 to determine the NFC champion for the 2018 season. But what happens for Google searches for the last few years like http://www.google.com/search?&q=2018+NFC+Championship+Game is that you primarily get instead Vikings vs. Eagles played on January 2018 to determine the 2017 NFC champion. In these last few years, something happened where reliable sources started to refer to the recent games using the calendar year it was played in January. If you want Rams/Saints/January 2019, that primarily is instead http://www.google.com/search?&q=2019+NFC+Championship+Game Zzyzx11 (talk) 03:01, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

• If it is not completely clear by my explanation above, my opinion is that it needs to be moved back to either 2018 NFC Championship Game or 2018 NFC Championship Game officiating controversy for a consistent naming convention with those other two articles per WP:NAMINGCRITERIA. And as per Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League#Naming conventions regarding "individual playoff games, [where] the year should correspond with the regular season which preceded the playoffs of which the game was a part, not the year in which the game was played". I'm completely neutral on the "officiating controversy" inclusion. If there needs to be a subsequent, separate RM discussion on the "2018–19" vs. "2018" issue, I'm willing to open that later. • Oppose the difference between this article and others, such as Butt Fumble and Fail Mary, is that there is a WP:COMMONNAME that has come to encompass the subject, which can include the play itself, the overall, game, and the legacy. If there was a common name, such as No Call, than that should be the title. Since there isn't, than the title should revert to the event itself, which is the game. The game is what makes the play and surrounding controversy notable (i.e. if this was a preseason game, no one would care). Based on a cursory review, the common name of the subject of this article is it's current title. We don't need to add a WP:DESCRIPTIVENAME. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:09, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

• Comment. Category:NFL Conference Championship Games shows the current defacto implementation of the applicable naming conventions. Five conference champinships have been given names (one NFC and four AFC games): The Catch (American football), Deflategate, The Drive, Freezer Bowl and The Fumble. Two particularly noteworthy conference championships have not been given names: 1995 AFC Championship Game and 1998 NFC Championship Game. Given that the name The Blown Call may never come into widespread use because it paints the officials in a bad light, the default, as set by the precedent of other games in Category:NFL Conference Championship Games, is to name this game 2018 NFC Championship Game. On the other hand, Category:National Football League controversies has two examples, 1921 NFL Championship controversy (the Staley Swindle) and 1925 NFL Championship controversy, which set a precedent for using "controversy" in the name. However, there was no championship game in those years. Category:National Football League games, used for notable regular-season games, has the example of 2001 Jaguars-Browns officiating controversy, a name used instead of Bottlegate. – wbm1058 (talk) 18:08, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

  • At 07:31, 15 April 2019‎ PeeJay2K3 moved page 2018 NFC Championship Game officiating controversy to 2018 NFC Championship Game: why not just have an article to cover the game as a whole?

Regarding "2019 incident"

I question as to why this section was ever deleted. Of course it wasn't as major as the 2018 Championship game, that's why it doesn't have it's own page. It seemed related and notable enough to earn a section in this article. All of the news said that the Saint got cheated again, which makes it relatable to this event. 2018 NFC Championship Game → NOLA No-Call – The play now has an official name, and was the main reason this game is notable. Also, "NOLA No-Call" is catchier and more concise than "2018 NFC Championship Game". WuTang94 (talk) 00:57, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

• Oppose move. Not only are "official names" for plays fairly hard to define, but your proposed title is about the play, whereas the article is about the game. Contrast Tuck Rule Game, which clearly indicates it's about the game, plus 2001 AFC Divisional Playoff Game would have been ambiguous. O.N.R. ^(talk) 08:19, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
