In 1882, Korean ambassador Bak Yeong-hyo to Japan requested the Chinese government allow him to use flag of the Qing Empire as the flag of Korea, but was refused by Qing government.(??)

This edit and sources are very questionable(hoax?). Watch out this page.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Request for photos

Dear Korean article writers and editors, have any of you by chance been to Baengnyeong Island? If so, please consider adding some photos to that article. It would be especially nice to have a photo of Changsan Cape, the nearby point of land in Ryongyon, North Korea, which is easily visible from Baengnyeong-do. Wikiproject workgroup on Sino-Japanese-Korean relations

Wikiproject Sino-Japanese-Korean relations

I have proposed a Wikiproject workgroup on Sino-Japanese-Korean relations.

In my opinion, Wikipedia topics on Sino-Japanese-Korean topics all too often, and unfortunately, reflect the tense, exaggerated, embittered and often politically nationalistic debates currently prevalent in the popular presses of these three great nations.

In many case, these polemics are immature, propagandistic and unencyclopedic in nature and causes being promoted by unethical editing habits. Japanese-Korean topics appear to be amongst the more problematic topics on the Wikipedia.

At the same time, within each nation and academic circles there are moves to create pan-national understanding and document an accurate account of history. It is therefore proposed to establish a Sino-Japanese-Korean workgroup interested in establishing good working relations to improve the academic nature of these articles and encourage normal editing.

For the sakes of honesty and transparency, this pan-national workgroup was sincerely proposed precisely in response to the mode of operation used by many editors

Such wasteful activities as persistent allegations, personal attacks and other distractions from the primary activity of content production and reference checking only discouraging newcomers, less aggressive and, especially, genuine academics from participating on the Wikipedia. They undermine the goodwill of the Wikipedia.

It is hoped that by bring together authors from across the spectrum who are interested in rising above differences standards, understanding and sensitivity can be improved; just as they are in academia at present.

How is this any different from the status quo? Would forming such a work group actually have any effect on how people behave? Which reminds me - please try to explain your edits at Korean war crimes. In fact, you cannot - the comments at the deletion poll all criticized you for writing the article in racist and nationalistic tone. Korean dancers

I meandered by Category:Korean dancers today, and found that nearly all the articles there are for K-pop artists. I figured the category was for actual dancers, like ballet dancers, classical dancers, even breakdancers if what they are known for is dancing...as opposed to people who happen to dance while doing other things like singing, like TVXQ. I love watching cute boybands dance and all, but do they really qualify as "dancers" in the sense meant by the category? --hamu♥hamu (TALK) 14:08, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't think so, though I guess dancers" can be defined fairly broadly. I too would expect the category to be used for "actual" dancers. Feel free to remove any articles you don't feel are appropriate. :) PC78 (talk) 15:23, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

1877 Daijō-kan order

In 1877, Japanese Daijō-kan issued an order stating that Ulleungdo and another island are not under Japanese rule [1][2]. Korea claims that this "another island" refers to Liancourt Rocks and considers this order as an evidence that Liancourt Rocks were under the control of Korea. Japan considers that this "another island" does not refer to Liancourt Rocks. Japan was NOT considers that this "another island" does not refer to Liancourt Rocks. Japan goverment never metioned that 1877 Daijō-kan order. Japan goverment still NOT answer about this docment. There is no official response to this document from mofa.go.jp(The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan). so, Japan never says "another island" does not refer to Liancourt Rocks and "antoher island" is currently Liancourt Rocks. 1905 Japanese Shimane Prefectural Notice No. 40

[...] Japan claims the incorporation was valid on grounds that Liancourt Rocks was a "terra nullius" and that Korea did not dispute the incorporation when the news was published. [...] This is Wrong. Liancourt Rocks is a protected article, and can only be edited by established editors. User:Masonfamily is a newly created account, and therefore he cannot edit it. Then, this newbie should read ArbCom rules in a green box at Talk:Liancourt Rock first. I noticed that this guy pasted the ame contents to several editors. Besides, Wikiepdia is managed by volunteer editors, so there is no obligation to take over his/her wish. The editor should clean up his own writing readable. Can someone please take a look at this newly created article? I can't tell if this is a real subject or not. "Dokdo volunteered campaign" gets no hits on google other than Wikipedia. I don't object to it as such, but is this really necessary? Should we not be consulting the rest of the project first, to see if there is any interest in such a work group? Lee Cheong-joon

If you're Korean, you would hear through various media that the writer past away today. He was a big tree in Korean literature, and influenced to Korean film, drama, and plays as well. Some of his works adapted into film are Seopyeonje (by Im Kwon-taek) and Iodo (Kim Ki-young). Borrowed Scenery in traditional East Asian gardens

I was bold and moved the article "Shakkei and the picturesque", a title no one would ever search for or link to, to the far more common and straightforward "borrowed scenery". I have done a little to bring a more worldwide view (i.e. not just Japan) into the intro sentence, and added the East Asian languages template, to represent the different ways this term is pronounced in different languages.

A lot of work needs to be done to expand this out to cover the Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese (and other?) applications of this concept, not just the Japanese, and the Korean and Vietnamese words need to be added to the language template at the top.

I am no expert on this subject, especially not on the non-Japanese aspects/versions of it, and so I apologize for leaving it in this half-done state, and implore anyone with an interest and an expertise in traditional East Asian gardens to contribute whatever you can. Suspected hoax article

An article tagged with the WikiProject Korea and WikiProject Vietnam banners has been suspected of being a hoax (or part thereof) on the grounds that a large part of it seems to be blatant pseudo-history. See Talk:Lý Long Tường for the discussion. If you have any points to make, then be sure to make your voice heard (however small or trivial they may be)! User:ASDFGH has created two new infoboxes, {{Infobox Korean Metropolitan cities‎}} and {{Infobox Korean Provinces‎}}, and has been adding them to articles. Personally I think they look good (though I've not looked at them too closely), but I know there has been a lot of recent discussion regarding {{Infobox Korean settlement}}, so I would like to make other project members aware of this development. Hello, everyone. How are you doing in the humid and scorching weather. If you want to cool off the heat as seeing cool images, there is a good place to please your eyes. At Patbingsu, several editors including Mindme (talk · contribs), me, and Badagnani have disputed over the inclusion of Mindme (talk · contribs)'s images to the article. The food is a very famous summer dessert comprised of red bean paste, shaved ice, fruits and others. Mindme's pictures have been included in the article[7][8], but better and diverse pictures come up. So if there is anyone want to see what patbingsu is and what images are presented on the talk page or meditating the dispute, please feel free to leave your input there. Need information

Although we have an article on the Cultural Heritage Administration and its National Treasures of South Korea, Natural monuments of South Korea, and Important Intangible Cultural Properties, we don't seem to have an article on South Korea's Living Treasures program (although we have Living National Treasure (Japan)). Can the Korean and/or English website for the South Korean Living Treasures program (whatever it's called) be located so that such an article may be created? Well, actually the project is not only for Koreans, however the user reminds me of Komdori (talk · contribs). First of all, the name itself tells that the user is not Korean. Koreans do not use the hyphen and capital letter altogether for their name in Romanization. Either Hye Hyun or Hye-hyun or Hyehyun is commonly used. I've also never heard of the name, 혜헌. If he is a Korean, the name is like monk's name. Very peculiar name. Besides, Koreans do not say "안녕" for the first meeting to a stranger.[10] That is regarded very rude and uneducated. Even Korean-Americans (2nd or 3rd generation) who can't speak Korean at all say "안녕하세요" in such case. Aside from this, the user is whitebashing or distorting info on the article. Whether the user is Korean, or Japanese, or a Fascist Communist disguised as a Islamic Jew is beside the point and should not be used in the evaluation of his edits. Ssaulabi, Sungbyong

I don't know about ssaulabi (I've never read about them from respectable sources, only hearsay), but seungbyeong is just a Korean word for "monk soldier." --Kjoonlee 03:25, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

My claim is that the buk is the term encompassing all drums used for Korean traditional music, while he insists that buk are exclusively referring to specific buk types (only drums affixed with "buk") used for pansori and samul nori in English speaking world. Yet, he has not provided any citations to back up his claim although he attached some sources from 국립국악원 and Grove Music Dictionary which only briefly refer to what 'buk' means. Certainly both the NCKTPA and New Grove Dictionary sources state that the term buk, in Korean, means "drum," but that the term is most often applied to the shallow barrel drum used to accompany pansori and in pungmul and samulnori. That is accurate and the article reflected it, then User:Caspian blue took it upon him/herself to unilaterally add all other types of Korean drum. The name of the drum used in samulnori, as nearly all English-language sources bear out, is simply buk, and the other drum used in samulnori has its own name which is "janggo." However, User:Caspian blue added the janggo and dozens of other Korean drums to the buk article, whereas description of these other drums belongs in an article entitled Korean drums--to avoid confusion with the specific drum that is actually called buk. Even more troublingly, User:Caspian blue added a long bulleted lest of all traditional Korean drums, but chose to remove the buk from that list. This is caused by a simple linguistic misunderstanding, by an editor whose first language is Korean, who presumes that if "buk" means "drum" in Korean, it must also mean "Korean drum" in English. However, as the NCKTPA and New Grove Dictionary sources bear out, the term buk is used in English to refer to the shallow barrel drum used in pansori, samulnori, pungmul, and a few other genres, whereas other traditional Korean drums, such as the famous janggu, are other than the buk and should have their own articles, or be described at Traditional Korean musical instruments or Korean drums. Would you kindly moderate your tone? The New Grove Dictionary is available in most good libraries, and is also available online. It confirms, in a bit more detail, the NCKTPA source which clearly explains the identity of the instrument called buk. That source may be found here. Note that another page of the NCKTPA's site, describing the hourglass drum called janggu, calls the instrument janggu and not buk. Under culture, Arirang still needs to be looked at as Arirang most certainly does NOT translate to beautiful dear. Any Korean can confirm this. What i received was that its about going home and having a feeling of being home and the song simply refers to those who walk further away from home will have sore feet and not feel comfortable. I cant see to edit the talk page for this and this was the best place to put it, apologies for my lack of editing knowledge, however i feel its best we talk about it. I'd like for interested Korean editors to take a look at the articles Li Zhengji, Yi Jeonggi, and Yi Jeong Ki. Right now, there is a proposal to merge them, but I see no good mergeable information and therefore have proposed Yi Jeonggi and Yi Jeong Ki for deletion. However, I am open to contrary opinions, particularly if there are reliable Korean sources either to confirm some of the claims in the article or at least discuss them in historiographical terms. Certainly they shouldn't exist as three separate articles. Late Choi Jin-sil's filmography

It is tragic that the actress was deceased. Although I'd never been a big fan of her, she had been a South Korean sweetheart for 20 decades. However, her notable films are currently "red linked", so is there anyone willing to create articles on her works? In addition, I think her career section is very poor in present compared to the others, especially her death report. Question, anyone knows what the meaning of 각시방 사랑 열렸네 (transcription: Gaksibang Sarang Yeollyeotne)? I haven't had a chance to see the TV drama and could not find any info on the title. Gaksi can be a maiden and "sarang" could be interpreted as "love", but what is "gaksibang"? Bang means " a room" so is it a maiden's room? Maps on The Sea of Japan naming dispute

The article on the naming disputes deals with naming disputes of the body of water from historical/geographical point of view. However, Kusunose (talk · contribs) only removed a Korean map as insisting that the map is written in Korean (in fact Chinese character), and said the map has nothing to do with the international dispute. I think his rationale is not only absurd, but also contradictory to the historically involved dispute. Historical maps only from other countries are utterly absurd because the dispute is between Korean and Japan and so are history. I think the attempt is just to remove Korean point of view. Besides, he failed to provide related content for his relocation of the Ricci's map. Therefore, more people's opinion on this is appreciated. Kintetsubuffalo (talk · contribs) deleted massive information regarding Empress Myeongseong on the article of Korea under Japanese rule as falsely accusing that the contents have POV/Korean propaganda/biased/craps to be deleted. I also clashed with him at Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598) regarding the result of the war. He has neither provided his reasoning why the contents are as such nor participated in a discussion. But just making personal attacks and refusing to participate in a discussion for the matters. He even asked Sennen goroshi (talk · contribs) to delete more info from the articles and asked members of WP:WikiProject Japan to defend his position. The answer is very simple. The blanking IP editor, 219.66.46.66 (talk · contribs) is a sock of indefinitely blocked Azukimonaka (talk · contribs) that lied about the "fact" just like his usual blanking campaign. So you can revert the page and add this reference.[14][15] Bakgoji (박고지) is more commonly used than bagogari (박오가리). Or you can try to move the title "Dried calabash strips" because preparation and cooking method are almost identical to both countries.--Caspian blue 17:02, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Infoboxes for Korean actors and singers

Hi all. I was wondering if anybody would support a Template:Infobox Korean-language singer and actor like Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor for Korean actors and singers. I want consistency and simplicity like many but I;ve noticed many of the articles don't have standard actor/singer infoboxes but have a transliteration box. Evidently somebody raised the concern years ago when Template:Infobox Korean Film was created which is specially used for Korean articles to include the transliteraitons in one. For instance Jo Yoon-hee, I think the box underneath looks out of place and would be much better as a parameter at the top of the top box. Also the infobox could be designed to incude Korean awards given to actors and singers which will display when required. Then there are articles like Ju Jin-mo which have large transliteration box but no actor box and it isn't consistent. Count Blofeld 13:57, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

I've said some of this on your talk page, but since we're discussing it more publically I'll repeat some of it here:

• There are many such articles – not just Korean ones – which don't have the actor infobox, and no reason at all why they can't simply be added. This aspect of your concern is not our problem.
• You want consistancy, but how is it not consistant when these articles already use {{Infobox Actor}}? The way I see things, introducing new infoboxes for certain groups of actors (e.g. Korean) can only lead to a greater inconsistancy.
• {{Infobox Korean film}} isn't really relevant here, but it's been around for years, and so far as I can tell there were no concerns raised which led to its creation.
• With regard to {{Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor}}, there is at least an entire WikiProject (WP:CLE) that covers such articles. I don't think there's a big enough crossover between Korean actors and musicians that would require forcing these two things into a single infobox; on the contrary, many Korean actors seen to have a background in modelling.
• If need be, Korean awards can be added to {{Infobox Actor}}.

I can't help but feel that you're trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. The only inconsistancy I see in what you've said is between actor articles that have an infobox and those that don't, but one might as well point out the inconsistancy between an FA-Class article and a Stub. Actor articles that don't have an infobox just need them adding, nothing more. The belief that it looks out of place to use two infoboxes together is a rather subjective one. Creating a whole subset of Korean infoboxes which do little but add language parameters is not, I think, something to be encouraged; {{Infobox Korean name}} is by design supposed to be used alongside other infoboxes, which makes this unnecessary anyway. Your FA to stub analogy is completely redundant as an excuse. Articles like Ju Jin-mo have much better content than articles like Jo Yoon-hee yet the least developed articles actually has an actor box while the most developed one doesn't. You keep emphasising that you are using the actor infobox but I see you;ve edited Ju Jin-mo and have not used one but somebody has bothered to add a translation box. I don't think it's a redundant analogy; either way it is simply a case of the article being incomplete. So I edited Ju Jin-mo and didn't add the infobox, so what? If it bothers you that much then why don't you add it to the article yourself? I'm not under any obligation to do certain things whenever I edit an article. I hear what you're saying; what I'm saying is that there should be a more solid reason for creating a new infobox beyond mere aesthetics when the current setup works just fine. There is no inconsistancy in an article having just one or the other box, merely an incomplete article. What would be inconsistant is having the general Infobox Actor as well as the Chinese box, your proposed Korean box, and who knows what else in the future (Infobox Indian actor? Infobox Japanese actor?), all doing essentially the same thing. And when you want to lump different things like actors and singers into the same infobox, what happens then when someone like yourself comes along from WP:MUSICIAN and says "hang on, there's an inconsistancy here because you're not using {{Infobox Musical artist}}"? I get that you think a combined infobox would look nice and pretty, I just don't think there is a genuine need for one, nor do I think that you have looked beyond at the bigger picture. Made some edits today regarding info from Samguk Yusa (which says in number (548) and text (26th year of reign)). Since 538 appeared now so often, I would like to make sure which is correct (or is both correct, but after some kind of different calendar?). Hmm.. according to an internet source, Samguk YusaSamguk Sagi clearly records the date in the 16th year of the King's reign.

國號南扶餘; The nation name was titled "Nam Buyeo" (South Buyeo)

Therefore there are three possibilities on this: the authors of the two books recorded differently on the date but Samguk Sagi is regarded more reliable by academics. Maps

Currently, Korean cities are shown on provincial maps. But the place of the province in Korea is NOT shown on the city pages. This certainly should be done. Compare Anyang, China and Anyang, South Korea: It's easy for some-one not familiar with the provinces of China to see where the city is in the country/world; where-as placing the Korean city involves attempts at flipping back and forth to the province site. My suggestion: All Korean cities should include a map of the country in the same way Wik/Chinese cities do. Kdammers (talk) 03:10, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Removal of galleries

Crossmr (talk · contribs), a member of this project has been removing galleries from Korea-related articles as leaving edit summaries like removed per consensus at Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Photo_galleries galleries are inappropriate for main space articles. Recreate on commons and link. I don't see what consensus have been applied for his unilateral and undiscussed removal of galleries. The guideline does not say that usages of galleries are inappropriate not are prohibited as he alleges. He also argues that his edits are based on WP:Consensus reached policy, so galleries should be deleted accordingly. However, I could not find any pertinent discussions on here nor the image policy talk page and he ignored my suggestion to open a discussion on the matter. So I raise the issue by myself. Adultery in Korean society

Hello, this source state :

 According to a survey carried out last year, nearly 68% of South Korean men and 12% of women confess to having sex outside marriage.
