What I liked

... I liked the badges that it made. I even put them in a special section in my user page!

What I didn't like

... I didn't like that when you edited, you had to manually change to the next adventure.

What I wanted more of

... The badges. Seriously.

What was unnecessary

... The bar count.

When it comes to adding images, we need to be able to add the alt tag and make it mandatory. This would comply with ADA.

What I liked

The applause at the end of each mission made me smile on the inside.

What I didn't like

If the editing features were more user friendly and didn't show the coding portions of the text, it would make it more appealing, however, I still plan on contributing and editing if I find something that doesn't match with my background of research in Nutrition and Exercise.

What I wanted more of

A video guided presentation of using wikipedia could be a nice addition.

What was unnecessary

Same as above. Showing the coding portion in the texts. That can be eliminated. Not all of us are coders but it sure is fascinating to learn about.

Any other thoughts you want to share

Thank you for all that Wiki gives to the world. It truly makes the world a more defined place to actually have access with the click of a button to all of its glory.

What I liked

This was a fun, friendly game, perfect for introducing new editors too. I liked the "space adventure" theme and how it highlights the two most important things when it comes to articles: Neutrality and Verification.

What I didn't like

There wasn't much I had to bother with, except for modifying my userpage in a way I didn't like.

What I wanted more of

Could there be a section on reverting edits like vandalism and warning users? There's plenty of that here, so it could be useful for new editors. Also some mention of protected pages could be welcomed, as well as finding images and sources (don't always expect for another user to find them).

Can't do it due to overlapping windows

Hi, I think the adventure is a great idea. But it does not work on my laptop, since the boxes with instructions are overlapping the edit window. So I cannot do what I am asked for, e.g. edit my user page, since the publish changes window is hidden behind the adventure window and I cannot move them. Any ideas how to fix this? Regards,--Ichdunich (talk) 12:22, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Ichdunich et al.! I experienced exactly the same issue. I didn't want to close the popup, because I'd been told exactly not to do that, but that meant I had to 'blindly' edit some stuff. Douginamug (talk) 13:50, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi, Douginamug can you tell me more about this. In which screen this was happened. To go pass through what you had done? --Ranjithsiji (talk) 18:10, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
Hey Ranjithsiji, In this screenshot, I have reached the edit page for one of the missions, and despite the cursor being active in the edit box and typing, the popup remains. As I said, I didn't want to close it. However, I just now realize that I activated the New Wikitext Mode beta feature in my preferences—perhaps this was the problem? I'm going to disable and check now Douginamug (talk) 18:17, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

What I liked

I really liked the overall idea and concept of the tutorial-esque minigame.

What I didn't like

This is probably just me but, I personally wanted to have the option of skipping some of the steps. Several times it was bugged on a certain place when I realized it was because I was going too fast and skipping ahead. For example, when publishing, if you didn't click the next step, where the next step would tell you to publish it, it would not make it count as you doing it, and when clicking the 'next' you would then realize that you messed up by not clicking it first and then publishing.

What I wanted more of

Maybe more information on wiki policies/rules/guidelines? Give the user a quick rundown of important WP articles ie. WP:NPOV, WP:N, and WP:SOURCE just to name a few. (I understand NPOV was addressed but maybe add a little more information)

What I liked

The badges were a nice touch. The ui makes it fun to use.

What I didn't like

The fact that if you already made a user page, you can't progress past stage 1. It is very annoying knowing that on my main account I will never be able to finish TWA. Another thing, sometimes you need to make a certain edit or edit summary but anything will work. Make it so you have to edit what is told.

What I wanted more of

Everything

What was unnecessary

The badges. They didn't feel like they were worth anything. On my new test account I got within 2 badges a minute it feels like.

Any other thoughts you want to share

Just sometimes how you get stuck on something if you have already done it is so annoying.

What I liked

...I liked the order and structure. It is very useful to get a simple and clear introduction to such a daunting thing.

What I didn't like

...I wish it would have been clearer and easier to navigate through. I was doing the tutorial and then I'd be done with a step and not know how to get back on track. I was lucky to kind of blunder back on it by going to the beginning again. Also the final step is very vague. We are asked to create sections on the Earth page but we aren't told how to do it. The answer is also not at all straight forward. It took me a very long time to figure out that this is done by changing the intro sentences to each paragraph to "heading" font.

What I wanted more of

...More of a sense of progress through steps A B C D etc. leading to a goal. As is each step kind of seems out of context or random.

Feedback

What I liked

The alien/space theme. An organized way to learn.

What I didn't like

Should clarify how to add links and retain heading style. Should teach how to write descriptive alt text and why it’s important Should clarify that you must add the article content between the 3 closing divs, otherwise it will be mis-formatted alongside the rest of the page.

What I wanted more of

I would have liked to have written real edits and cited real sources so that my tutorial work actually helped wikipedia.

What was unnecessary

...

What I didn't like
OH boy... first, if you have your preferences changed from the default then this is kinda useless because it tells you to use things like the image button which simply don't exist with the New Wikitext editor, second, the Teahouse is out of date in the Wikipedia Adventure and now looks much different, third, with anything that has to do with editing, I have to go to the URL and manually change step= to go to the next step so I could actually advance. Also, the dude that tells you that you didn't add a reference somehow increases the article's size to 6 MILLION, which is way beyond what most articles size is. And he doesn't even add 6 million bytes to the article, he only adds a maintenance template saying that the article needs refs.

What I wanted more of

What I liked

I felt that it covered the most salient aspects of editing the wikipedia. Also, I liked the overall tone, which is very positive and open.

What I didn't like

After my browser (chrome) got hung and I had to kill it, I monitored the memory usage on my PC. It would quickly grow, especially when finishing up a topic, so I had to restart chrome repeatedly to avoid it hanging and forcing me to kill it again. I checked the list of bugs, and was surprised to find nothing about this in there. I am using "Version 98.0.4758.102 (Official Build) (64-bit)" of Chrome on Kubuntu 20.04 (KDE Plasma Version 5.18.8, KDE Frameworks Version 5.68.0, Qt Version: 5.12.8, Kernel Version 5.4.0-100-generic) on an HP Desktop with 4 x Intel Core i3-3440 CPU @3.30GHz with 7.6 GiB of RAM.

What I wanted more of

I'd like to scan and post some images in the enclosures to some CDs I have, so I would like to have learned more about how to do that without violating any copyright rules. Maybe I can find those guidelines on the wikimedia site?

What was unnecessary

Having the tutorial popup follow me around on the other pages I would access while taking a break from the tutorial. I noticed that this issue is in the list of bugs people are working on, but you asked so I'm just sayin' it bugs me too.

What I liked

It taught me lots of…let’s say stuff.

What I didn't like

Every time I was asked to edit the source and then published changes, I was unable to 'progress' along the adventure. I simply got the option to go backwards or would get stuck in a loop of going back to complete the same action again and again. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is an error. I'm using Safari. Thanks.

What I wanted more of

Accessibility. That’s something I can note.

Feedback

What I liked

It was an excellent introduction to editing! Good for learning how to do basic tasks.

What I didn't like

It was hard to use and interact with. You have to click everything in the correct order otherwise the whole thing breaks, and the X button should have a warning, such as "Are you sure you would like to exit mission?" when clicked.

What I wanted more of

More initiative on the user's part, a lot of it is copy & paste.

What was unnecessary

The buttons you must press to signify you have copied text or added something, because they serve no functional purpose and if you do not press them it does not continue.

Any other thoughts you want to share

The image insert part is either outdated or has a very misleading explanation.

What I liked
  • Touched upon the important concepts.
  • The shortness of this section should not be construed as a low rating. I'm an experienced editor, so I played it mostly to test it.
What I didn't like
  • A few times, I forgot to click "done editing" (or similar) in the dialog box before clicking Publish and it messed up the game flow. I had to go back and make a dummy edit to continue.
  • The <div> container for the simulated pages is too easy to mess up. It looks like I inadvertently added content after it on multiple occasions which messed it up (like here and here). In the second one, it also overlaps with existing page elements in an ugly way. I think it should be replaced with a simple heading template that doesn't require any closing tags.
  • On the talk page steps, the dialog box ends up with a second big blue "Start a new discussion" button before the intended game button, which is confusing because the "Start a new discussion" button will not advance the adventure, yet it is styled the same as the one you're supposed to click.
What I wanted more of
  • I don't think the preview button was mentioned. Previewing is a good habit for new editors to get into. At least once, it should probably prompt you to preview before proceeding with clicking Publish. But only once (otherwise it's too annoying and bloats the flow), and give non-binding reminders after that.
What was unnecessary
  • I mentioned this above, but the CSS styling containers on the TWA simulated pages are failure prone and should be replaced with something less breakable.
Any other thoughts you want to share
  • I'm not a new editor, so my experience is different from the target audience.
  • It bloated my edit count by about 50. I guess that's fine?
  • The simulated teahouse has some weird styling particularly at the top of the page where a bunch of elements seem jumbled together in a mess of floats and clears.
  • Some of the images provided for the last task, where you add images, don't really match up to the content. This was my page after following the instructions: User:Frogging101/TWA/Earth/2. They're all good images, but it's weird to end up with a photo of schoolgirls in the Orbit and rotation section. This is a nitpick, that's why I put it last.

What I didn't like

This isn't a problem with TWA, but I didn't even know it existed until now, and I've been making minor edits for some time. I think this should be more visible on the Learn to edit page. It's very easy to follow!

What I wanted more of

n/a

What was unnecessary

Technically, many parts, but I think it's engaging and well-designed. The fun stuff doesn't distract from the objective.

Any other thoughts you want to share

TWA may need to updates in some parts. For example, it states that Commons has over 16 million files; it has now surpassed 89 million and is moving rapidly! Some proofreading of the grammar in the tutorial might also be advisable.

Feedback

What I liked
  • The overall flow and theming, I enjoyed going from task to task
  • Receiving the badges - Love somewhat arbitrary achievements
What I didn't like
  • I started the adventure on the new Wikipedia layout, and many of the locations referred to in the adventure just didn't line up. I had to go to the old layout in order to continue at some point early on.
  • I don't know why, but at certain points, especially when responding to the discussion, the adventure wouldn't let me continue unless I copy and pasted my change description verbatim. I don't know if this is intentional.
  • I don't know if this is new, but many of the pages had a black border around them, and any content I added would be added outside of the black border and look unnatural. I didn't see any messaging saying that my content should be added within the division, so I wonder if this is an oversight that can be easily fixed.
What I wanted more of
  • I don't know how "advanced" it is, but I would love a slightly more fleshed out (optional?) section on templates. That's one of the most intimidating things to me as I'm entering this world, even though as I learn about templates they don't seem as hard as I thought navigating them could be.
What was unnecessary
  • I felt like there was unnecessary amounts of time spent chatting in the discussion pages, but maybe I'm underestimating how important this is.
Any other thoughts you want to share
  • I had a nice time going through the adventure!

Hi TWA team! This was a great experience. I liked the clarity of the walkthrough overall. What I liked

I loved how the tutorial walked you through editing articles that are tied to your user account, so you don't need to worry about screwing things up. I also really liked the emphasis on how everything is easily reversible, and how you are encouraged to edit articles.

What I didn't like

I only really had two complaints in the tutorial, the first being that there's no way to skip past the badges being added without manually modifying the `step` section in the URL, and my second complaint was a careless error on my part that caused me to be stuck in the Rich Text Editor instead of the Source Editor.

What I liked

The guide is structured, and simulates well a real day-to-day scenario of editing and messaging on the talk page.

What I didn't like

I think there were too many callouts, and I didn't understand why the tutorial adds pages to my user page without telling me how to delete/remove it, later.

What I wanted more of

Writing style exercises.

What was unnecessary

I found that the badges and congrats were given after every few clicks. It's nice, but a bit overdone, TMHO. What does the "Congrats me" button do? I isn't clear; maybe just "next" or "continue to next mini-lesson".

Any other thoughts you want to share

The callouts/dialogs were stuck without an option to move or minimize them. This interfered seeing the link and image dialog forms, as well as editing the text after clicking "Edit source". I had to enlarge the window size and move the underneath dialog just so I could see its form, or to scroll text behind the dialog when editing the source.

Regarding content issues, I found these issues on units 6 or 7:

  • The image icon description is wrong, as there is no tree and sunset, but only two mountains.
  • WikiLove icon? There's no example of it; consider showing the icon, or a capture of the top section of another user's page.

What I liked

What I saw of the tutorial seemed like a good, basic foundation. Very interactive.

What I didn't like

Getting stuck on level 3? Or was it 4? It wanted me to bold some text and save the change, which I did, but then it just booted me back to the same step and told me to bold the text again?

What I wanted more of

I would have liked to have seen more of the tutorial! Not to come across as passive-aggressive, it did really seem interesting!

What was unnecessary

I do wish we hadn't had to edit our own user page so much. I don't really like drawing so much attention to myself when I don't know what I'm doing. Then again, I can understand wanting to get the worst mistakes out of the way on a new user page with very little time invested into it rather than on an article.

Any other thoughts you want to share

This was on Firefox, Ver. 119.0.1, Win10.
