January 2008

  • Baton Rouge Magnet High School (B / Mid) Current article is of a good length, has some references, includes pictures, and s info-box, giving it B class. Alumni, awards and history show this school has reasonable Mid importance. For GA class the article will need significant improvement with referencing, many sections such as 'Alumni' are currently completely unreferenced. This will also help the article follow WP:NPOV, which there currently some issues with, note that for GA the article will have to be in a stable state i.e no disputes over content in progress. I notice some school lyrics are included in the article - I would suggest these are checked to follow copyright and if alright are moved to WikiSource and linked to from the article. Do however include some information about the lyrics in context to the school if notable. For the 'Extracurricular activities' section try and convert this to prose if possible and put it into context, see WP:SCH#WNTI. Finally, try and make sure the article follows WP:MOS, for examples titles should only have the first letter of the first word capitalised unless it is a proper noun.   • Bunscoill Ghaelgagh (Start/High) a primary school on the Isle of Man. It is the only school that teaches in the Manx laguage hence high. Needs a correct photo and some input from the school.   • Salisbury Cathedral School (Stub / High) over 900 years old, founded by a French saint who was a cousin of the King. Still has impressive alumni.   • Triam Udom Suksa School (B / Mid) Requested. Overall, this is a good article. Plenty of content, an infobox, pictures, and some references. This article could eventually reach GA status with further work. The biggest issue with the article at the moment is references - it has enough for B class, but not enough for anything higher. In particular some sections such as Campus have no references at all, and with WP:BLP it is important the alumni section is well referenced. When adding more references try and add as much variety as possible, both primary and secondary sources can be used as necessary. The article contains pretty much all the sections a school article needs, but if it is possible to expand Curriculum all the better. Also, the introduction might need to be a bit longer for a long article such as this. The article contains plenty of pictures, but if more can be added in sections lower down the article, then that would be a good addition.   • Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (B / Mid) Requested. A reasonably good article, but some further work is needed. The first thing that can be noticed is references - there are very few for an article this size. Try and add more especially for completely unreferenced sections such as history, you can use the school website, but it is a primary source, and secondary sources are better for an encyclopaedic entry. It would help the look of the article if more pictures were added, some of the campus would be fantastic. The article currently covers a lot but there is room for expansion, some information on alumni in particular is needed. The other issue is the school song. There has been a lot of debate and controversy over including the school song in an article. First, is including it a copyright infringement? If it is not in the public domain or under the GNU Free Documentation License it should be removed. Second, consensus is that school songs should not generally be included in Wikipedia anyway. If copyright issues are resolved, the text itself should be moved to Wikisource - go to the bottom of La Martiniere Calcutta and it is possible to find a good example on how it can be done. For improvement, a longer introduction might be good, as well as the inclusion of the school logo within the infobox.   • Tiffin School (B / Mid) Requested externally on my talk page. This has become quite a strong article with many sections, pictures, references, and content. I see many of the sources used are primary - to improve try and expand the source pool to include more secondary sources. I would suggest trying to get references for the alumni section and expand the introduction as it is currently a little short for an article of this size. Also I would recommend expanding some sections further down the article such as the Tiffin shop if possible, pictures here would be good too.   • Butterfield Elementary School (Lake Elsinore, California) (B / Mid) Current collaboration. Most elementary schools are not notable but this article shows quite an exception to this. This is quite a good article and could even meet the Good article criteria with work. My first thoughts when seeing the article were - external links, there are a lot of them, too many. The article should contain a few external links in the external links section, usually the official site and a few other important relevant ones. All other links should be part of in-line citations using <ref></ref> tags, external links within the text should be kept to a minimum, and individual news articles should really only be in in-line citations unless they have particular importance to the article. See Wikipedia:External links for further guidance. The section set-up can also be improved, try and not repeat the article title in section tiles, and if possible create sub-sections to seperate large amounts of text. The introduction is rather short for an article this size, consider expanding it, use Wikipedia:Lead section for guidance. Finally, try and consider moving the logo into the info-box, where it generally should be for school articles.   • Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík (Start/Top) A very important old school in Iceland founded in 1056 which has educated most of the country's Prime Ministers and is therefore of top importance.   • La Salle College (B / Mid) Requested. A well-written article with lots of factual information and very neutral tone. Alumni list, history, and content make this one of the better Hong Kong school articles I've seen. Could still use more references and a stronger lead but otherwise very close to GA. I have upgraded this school to high importance. It's a leading Catholic school with a long history in an important historical building. There aren't many schools which can boast that Oliver Cromwell slept there, and even fewer with saints amongst their alumni, let alone seven Victoria crosses. The school already has three Wikipedia articles in other languages which testifies to its international recognition. Dahliarose (talk)

  • St. Bees School (Start/high) Requested re-assessment. This article is developing well. It should really be a B, but is lacking in references. Trivia needs trimming.   • Winchester College (B/Top) Upgraded to top importance. It already has Wikipedia articles in seven different languages. It is one of the oldest and best known English schools and a large number of books have been written about it testifying to its importance.   • St Paul's School (London) (B/high) I'm surprised we haven't already assessed this school. It is one of the original nine 'public' schools in England and one of the highest achieving schools in the country easily justifying high importance.   • Haileybury and Imperial Service College This article has been expanded since it was last assessed and is now a B. The alumni would be best split into a separate article. More content should be added particularly about the curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Most importantly there is a lot of work needed on the referencing. I am upgrading the article to high importance based on the alumni (which include Rudyard Kipling, three George Crosses and seventeen Victoria Crosses – only Eton and Harrow have more VCs) and the history.   • Trinity Grammar School (New South Wales) (B / High) - I am assessing this article for WikiProject Schools as B / High on a request (apologies that it has taken four months to respond to an assessment request). Quite a good article in terms of length and organisation, and quite well referenced. This could get a good article rating with work. First, the introduction could be expanded as it is a little short for a long article - three long paragraphs will do, it should summarise the entire article. Second, the history section is a good length with pictures but the sourcing could be improved; there are some gaps and only one source is used, getting varitey as much as possible with sourcing is a good thing. Third, the school song. Has the copyright status of this been verified as ok for inclusion? Even if it has past consensus on the issue has been that the school song should be on Wikisource and linked from the article. Any sourced details about the song (history e.t.c.) are fine however. Forth, some sections such as 'House system' have no sources - even if they are primary sources, adding some is still good. Finally, The 'Curriculum' section looks incomplete and short, expansion would be nice there.   • St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School (Start / Low) I am assessing this article as Start / Low for WikiProject Schools after a request. An article of a good length and breadth, but does need some work. The first word which came into my head after reading the introduction was advertising, not encyclopaedic - which is of concern. The article introduction/lead section is supposed to review and summarise the article, not try and promote it. For example - In today’s world, particularly during the adolescent years, it is important for young people to know they are loved and cared for. It is in that Love that they come to see faith as a vitally important and essential part of their lives. St. John the Baptist acknowledges and promotes this philosophy. A nice thing to say, but I would expect to read that in a school leaflet, not an encyclopaedic article. Articles should follow core policy such as WP:NPOV and WP:NOT#ADVERTISING. The next issue is on references, they are difficult to find in the article. There are currently three, more should be added to verify the article fully and they should come from a varitey of locations. The overall content of the article is another issue, WP:WPSCH#GT and WP:SCH#S can provide help on what needs to be included. There are a lot of lists, these should be converted to prose if possible. General trivia of only student interest should also be removed. The table in the top right hand corner should be converted to a proper infobox, see WP:WPSCH to find those avaliable.   • New York City Department of Education (Start/Mid) — Needs a lot more references, considering the number of people involved with the district. It doesn't apply to more than just the local area, so it gets a low on the importance scale. I marked to sections that need to be updated to at least 2007, if not 2008. You have the makings of a GA article in my opinion. The first paragraph of the history needs some in-text citations as does the part about Wynne Satterwhite and George Perez in the intro.   • Mars Hill Bible School (Start/low) Without getting into the NPOV aspects discussed above, I will address the rest of the article. First off, the citation style is solid, and the number of in-text citations is about right. You could add a few more as appropriate. The one that brings this article down, and must be corrected is the overuse of lists. "Academics," "Athletics," "Administration" and "Trivia" are just lists and should be in prose. The alumni section is not sources and frankly, the TV show contestants aren't really all that significant to the school, unless they are honored on a regular basis by members of the community. It is the first school in the UK to have a combined cadet force, one of the first to offer the International Baccalaureate, and has the unusual privilege of being the home of a science and astronomy centre. There is also a unique game of hockey named after the school. This is an excellent page which is close to being a good article. There are two sections consisting mainly of lists (the campus section and school terms) which would be best converted to prose. These sections are also lacking in references.   • It depends how many English schools we want to make top importance. If Stonyhurst is top then Ampleforth College would also have to be top, as it's by far the better-known Catholic school. There are many other important English schools with long histories that would probably have better claims for top importance such as Marlborough College, Charterhouse School, Radley College and St Paul's School (London).   • Yeah, I can where you are coming from there. A lot of those articles linked are not of that good quality compared to this one, so there importance is more difficult to recognise. We also want to keep the distribution of top importance articles reasonably balanced around the world, though some countries will always have a quite a lot more than others. There are currently 28 individual school top importance articles, of which 5 of them (17%) are in England. I was interested to discover that there are only 6 in the USA by comparison, despite the fact the country is a lot bigger in population and land mass (I think the lack of history for a lot of the schools there is a cause). So from this area there is certainly no more demand for any Top importance England school articles, though it would be good to have one from another part of the UK such as Scotland. Also, I will add that out of the currently listed top importance England school articles I heard of three of them before coming to Wikipedia, I had never heard of any of the above before now.   • There is possibly an argument for a greater proportion of English schools in the list as our public schools (in the English sense) were so influential in the rest of the world, and schools in India, Australia and elsewhere modelled themselves on our system. However, there is still a lot of work to be done identifying the top importance school articles. Perhaps we can do a review when (if?) all the importance ratings have been added. I think we need the Americans to identify their top importance schools. There should surely be many more top American schools than have currently been identified. There's only one school from Africa and not a single South American school on the list at present. I did do all the Scottish schools a while back, and made Gordonstoun top importance. I did wonder about Fettes College but the article was very poor and the rating didn't seem justified on the existing content. I'd heard of all the English schools on the list, though I'd not heard of Stonyhurst. However, I don't think I could have named a single American school before discovering Wikipedia.   • I can help with adding more Top importance American schools. Most will essentially be the private and private boarding schools around New England: the ones I've heard of, the ones identified by the Wall Street Journal, and from the Selection Bot results. I have to admit, I only knew two British secondary schools before Wikipedia: Eton College (which I've seen in person) and Stonyhurst, because I read a biography on J.R.R. Tolkien. But reading your discussion, it looks like High for Stonyhurst is fine. Placing a few of the other UK schools as Top is not a problem for me, however, because there are so many schools with established histories. Some of the top scoring public schools in the US, mostly magnets like Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, are less than 50 years old. High importance seems reasonable for all these schools based on the content of the current articles. They all have a worrying lack of references, and I suspect that much of the material is copyvio. I look for an extensive listing of alumni, age, and some form of national/international designation as a school of excellence. I whole-heartedly agree about every country having High/Top-importance schools and even from my view the article is around Mid to High, but I look at the importance assessment slightly differently. Every school of Top importance will definitely have the extensive alumni and background to support such a rating, it's just a matter of when the article develops to the point where it can demonstrate that importance. If that supporting material isn't there, I'd rather assess lower because there may be far more notable institutions that just haven't made their way to Wikipedia yet. --Jh12 (talk) 21:14, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Valid view, but when (nearly) every American footballer is notable then its a bit unfair to wait for Armenians to make their fame apparent in Wikipedia. Although I can see your point I think that it will be a long time before they make it. This school was previously named after a famous Armenian playwright called Gabriel Soundukyan - not only has Wikipedia not heard of him but Google only just shows you a statue built in his honour but no idea who he is. If we wait for these people to be notable on an English language wikipedia then these countries will wait a long time for schools rated as "Top". I prefer to guess with three we have and downrate them as we find American footballers who went to them (last bit was an attempt at a joke). Well done Victuallers on another excellent article! I would endorse the high importance rating, especially in view of the lack of other Armenian schools with Wikipedia articles. We need to do our best to encourage articles on schools in other countries to counter the systemic bias in Wikipedia (just compare the number of American schools on Wikipedia with the number of Chinese schools for instance). Of the three existing Armenian school articles this seems to be the most interesting and important school. In countries where English is not the first language it can be difficult to judge schools by alumni lists, as often very important people (politicians, writers, etc) don't have their own Wikipedia articles. All good points, but I will probably continue to trend lower importance unless given other indication. My reasoning is that regardless of systemic bias, the burden of proof is still on the editor, not the assessor. Unless a person has first-hand knowledge of the country, it's hard to tell if a school is notable, particularly if it lacks references. For instance, I know with a high degree of confidence that there are two definite Top-importance schools in Taiwan: Taipei First Girls' High School and Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School. I also know from first-hand knowledge that High School attached to Tsinghua University is a highly prestigious school in mainland China. I think this could possibly be top importance. The alumni list is relatively short at present but includes some internationally recognised people such as Michael Douglas, Indira Gandhi and the Queen of Thailand. Another book, Marcel Proust by William C.     • I would suggest high importance for this school for now judging on the current content. It was not founded until 1803 so doesn't have the same history as the other French schools. The alumni list is long (especially for the French article) but the names are not so internationally well known as the alumni for some of the other French lycées below.

Strictly speaking it's an institution of higher education – it provides preparatory classes for the Grandes Écoles and is the only French lycée to do so. I just did some research to check. We may want to wikilink Education_in_France#Secondary_education as well. The lycées listed should serve at least the Lycée stage of secondary education: ages 15 to 18, except for Lycée Saint-Louis, which only offers the CPGE (hopefully it will all be individually referenced in the future). I'm not sure, then, if Lycée Saint-Louis is WPSchool, WPUni, or both. Prytanée National Militaire serves ages 11-15 in its Primary cycle or Collège stage [5], and it serves ages 15 to 18 in its second cycle or Lycée stage http://www.cofat.terre.defense.gouv.fr/PJ/Documents/Decouverte/ODF/Lycees/Documents/2CYCLE.pdf. More information is available at the French ministry of defense site in terms of admission requirements, and there's a very brief profile page.
