Ellen Isabel Jones

edit

Hi there.

I fixed up Ellen Isabel Jones a little, by adding inline citations. I'll add notes on how to do this, below. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  00:16, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Feel free to get help, here.  Chzz  ►  00:19, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

How references work

edit

Simple references

edit

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:WJDB/reftest and try it out.

Named references

edit
Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook">
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates

edit

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

Speedy deletion nomination of Flendish Hundred

edit

Hello WJDB,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Flendish Hundred for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

JTP (talkcontribs) 15:26, 9 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

The source it's taken from is copyright-free and in any case I intend to rewrite it over time. Can you just delete bits you don't like and then I'll sort out the rest? I'm not an expert on Wikipedia so would appreciate if you don't go hard on me!

WJDB (talkcontribs) 15:33, 9 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I just noticed this question sitting here unanswered and I thought I should explain and hopefully help you avoid the same problem in the future.
Wikipedia lets anybody copy & re-use its content. If somebody uploads content from elsewhere without attribution then Wikipedia would be granting permission to reuse material without any right to do so. This applies to all versions of the article, not just the latest version. If there's a copyright violation in the article's history it needs to be have the offending versions deleted. That's a fair chunk of work, identifying which versions are violations and which are not. Better all round to not introduce any copyright text in the first place.
If the source isn't copyright, or is out of copyright it's best to make it clear, just to prevent unneeded cleanup. Hope that helps, Cabayi (talk) 11:15, 5 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Managing a conflict of interest

edit

  Hello, WJDB. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Now that you've created William John Dwyer Burkitt the significance of your username and your connection to William Burkitt (judge) are pretty clear. Please be careful. April 2018

edit

  Welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but in one of your recent edits to Agatha Christie, it appears that you have added original research, which is against Wikipedia's policies. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. I would also note that one of the edits you made to the article may link to a copyright violation. Please familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's copyright policy. RivertorchFIREWATER 13:34, 5 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ways to improve William John Dwyer Burkitt

Hi, I'm Cwmhiraeth. WJDB, thanks for creating William John Dwyer Burkitt!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. This article should be about William John Dwyer Burkitt and the Garnett-Orme murder case should be split off as a separate article.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Ways to improve Ricciardi of Lucca

edit

Hello, WJDB,

Thank you for creating Ricciardi of Lucca.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Thank you for your new article on the Ricciardi of Lucca. Note that it is currently an "Orphan" meaning that no other Wikipedia articles link TO it. This makes the article tough to find for interested readers. See WP:DE-ORPHAN for pointers.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Doomsdayer520}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.
