WikiCup 2011 October newsletter

The 2011 WikiCup is now over, and our new champion is   Hurricanehink (submissions), who joins the exclusive club of the previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009) and Sturmvogel_66 (2010). The final standings were as follows:

  1.   Hurricanehink (submissions)
  2.   Sp33dyphil (submissions)
  3.   Yellow Evan (submissions)
  4.   Miyagawa (submissions)
  5.   Wizardman (submissions)
  6.   Casliber (submissions)
  7.   Resolute (submissions)
  8.   PresN (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.

Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls. It's been a pleasure to work with you all this year, and, whoever's taking part in and running the competition in 2012, we hope to see you all in January! Visions of Johanna, thanks

Many thanks for your GA review, have a nice day, Great Orange Pumpkin, is this your real name?

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet? We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

Mick gold (talk) 11:27, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

hello, Mick gold
The name "GreatOrangePumpkin" derives from a character in Peanuts, The Great Pumpkin. The intelligent but gullible Linus is the only one who belives in its/her/his existence. Every Halloween he waits in a pumpkin patch but he never see him. I don't know exactly why I chose this name, but I know that nearly every character has a degree of similarity between me and them; I have Charlie Brown's clumsiness, Lucy's skills in checkers, Snoopys laziness and so on. By the way, my name is Thomas.--♫GoP♫TCN 14:16, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Otis Redding

hello, please fail this article; I want to take it to Peer Review as suggested by the second reviewer (although I don't think it will help; well let's see how it goes). I want to thank you for your efforts; with your help, the article would never be as good as it is now. Regards.--♫GoP♫TCN 11:44, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the barnstar, and good luck with the Peer Review and the future development of the article. I think your determination to improve the article is admirable, and is just the spirit that Wikipedia needs. I'm genuinely sorry that I couldn't help out more on the article. What I like doing is passing an article as a GA - it frustrates me to have to let one go. I would like to continue helping out, but I have such a backlog of requests at the moment, and am rather busy in real life, that I am struggling to keep up. I think what held us up on Otis, was the issues regarding the history merge and the images. Best wishes. SilkTork ✔Tea time 22:52, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification

Hi, this message is to let you know about disambiguation links you've recently created. A link to a disambiguation page is almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. For more information, see the FAQ or drop a line at the DPL WikiProject.

Would you perhaps be willing to reconsider your position on this nomination, in light of the more recent discussion?   — C M B J   07:51, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Eurasian Union...

I don't think I was POV pushing or using the talk page as a forum. I do think it was a bit too much to include something which is not likely to happen in the second sentence of the lede (just like I said in my post). VictorianMutant(Talk) 20:11, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

You are unfair with this article. If you notice your original statements got amended and my contribution helped a lot in rectifiing this. But still you are negating facts. Just browse internet and you will see that there is no mention of any reaction by any of the involved States. Neither negative or Positive. YOU are trying to change the reality. I see that you are a Russian fan from your page, but this does not allow you to bully around wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mt hg (talkcontribs) 11:47, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

It was unsourced. "Just browse internet" is not a great argument, especially when it's controversial. You need to cite "There was no immediate comment on this statement by the involved NATO and EU members". It is entirely not a fact. So I reverted it. If you continue to add unsourced/POV comments, I will report you to admins. Regards.--♫GoP♫TCN 11:56, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I even see that you are using the same "policy" with whoever tries to fix this article. This is not your article and your point of view or what you are willing to make the people think is not a fact. If a politician mention something it does not mean we have to include that. If it was the case, then we should put Russia as a candidate country in the EU and NATO since Berlusconi called a lot of times for it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mt hg (talkcontribs) 11:50, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Duster

Ho GOP - on checking for links related to the above Gary Burton album I noticed the excellent work already undertaken in your sandbox. Please feel free to add the additional detail you have to the rather stubby entry I created. I would add it myself but feel it would be impertinant to do so without your knowledge. Bob Dylan's Las Vegas sound

Great Orange Pumpkin, I'm sure you meant well, but the info about Dylan's "Las Vegas" sound on his 1978 tour is definitely in Heylin's biography Behind The Shades: Take Two (2000), and not in Saved! The Gospel Speeches (1990), which is simply a collection of the evangelical Christian sermons which Dylan preached from the stage in 1979 and 1980.   The Copyeditor's Barnstar
Thank you for your edit on the hip-hop dance article. As you know (or may not know?) this article is currently under review for FA status and dash/hyphen issues was one of the problems my reviewer brought up. I appreciate you for fixing them. Thanks again. // Gbern3 (talk) 00:52, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
I just used a script which replaced hyphens with n-dashes; so I decline this barnstar. If you follow this instruction, you can do that in just two clicks! :)--♫GoP♫TCN 09:42, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
