BLP bot

Hi mate, saw your edit at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates. Didn't realise anyone was using it. I'm one of the only active members of that WikiProject and that page hadn't been updated since 2011. Was just doing some housekeeping in the process of reviving the project - getting rid of unused things. If someone outside the project is using it (or might use it later) then by all means, I have no objection to keeping it. Apologies. Stalwart111 20:44, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

No problems, the bot did die for a while, but it is back now. I mainly use the list via this combined transcluded list. If the page hadn't been updated, them it is a good thing, but if there is a new ublp that is in your project, them it will catch it. I did look for some discussion on the deletion, but when i couldn't find any, I reinstated it. Regards, The-Pope (talk) 23:04, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
No, you're right - I did not discuss it. If you have a look at my edits to the WikiProject, I've signed us up for some new tools and removed some things that did not seem to be in use. This was part of that effort. I've had few responses from other members (read: almost none) but I did not consider it might be of use to non-members. Thanks for your note! Cheers, Stalwart111 23:13, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
One more generic tool that might be of use, is to get any projects that you are interested in into the User:Svick/WikiProject cleanup listing. It replaced the old Wolterbot cleanup list, but only runs weekly, not daily like the Dashbot UBLP list. Regards, The-Pope (talk) 23:41, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
I'll take a look - thanks for the suggestion! Stalwart111 03:44, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Bewildered

The Stannage bio seems to have been through the wringer... any thoughts? - cheers SatuSuro 01:45, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Other than the ref issues that Hack fixed up it didn't seem too bad an edit. It is very hard to avoid making bios of good, clean, wholesome, successful multi faceted people from getting weaselly or hagiography-like, without having a heap of refs to back up that he was really that nice a guy. In this case I have no real knowledge of Stannage other than a bit of his footy stuff and the WA history book. I'll add it to my watch list, at least they tried to add refs! The-Pope (talk) 02:46, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

hmm think i might have to subscribe to the worst, just to see all the slightly older signficant others and their obits... off like flies at the moment - did you ever see the ainslie and garwood book of the same name? SatuSuro 03:15, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Jimmy Melbourne

I'd never even heard of Jimmy Melbourne so thanks for the update. He's not mentioned in Black Gold by Colin Tatz, so presumably he was only rediscovered in the last decade or so. On a related matter, I'm still hunting down refs for the first Indigenous player in the SANFL, first coaches in major leagues and so forth (Polly Farmer would hold a few of these records) and do you think I can find a reference to Dan Christian being the first to captain a first class cricket side? --Roisterer (talk) 01:39, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

when the WAFL historians found him a few years ago it was reasonably big news on a Wafl scale! That national trust article describes the discovery process fairly well. Polly would be the first indigenous Sandover medallist, but no mention of it in the Sandover book. It is a fine line between celebrating and acknowledging the achievements of indigenous people without appearing patronising. Worth trying though. cheers, The-Pope (talk) 02:02, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Re: "unreferenced means no references, not poorly refed"

Er.... but there are no references or notes on that page, not one. External links are NOT references. Emeraude (talk) 14:11, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Well they certainly aren't inline references and very often they include sources that we'd rather editors not use as references. But it isn't unusual to have a poorly referenced article where the "references" that it started with get demoted to an external links section. Restructuring the article that way can be useful way to point out to newbies that we don't accept a particular site as a third party reference. One important reason to differentiate between refimprove and unreferenced templates is that while both indicate that an article has problems, a refimprove template says that you've seen the "reference" and don't think it good enough. An unreferenced template is best avoided in any scenario where you might have a newbie ignoring it because the article does have what they consider to be a reference. Update?

Please explain why you added the {{update}} tag to an article created today and sourced to today's newspaper. PamD 08:55, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Because it was missing all of the latest info on why he has become infamous in Australia. The quote concerns his work from a few years ago. It's probably a bit duplicitous with the stub tag, and the scandal is still unfolding (Dank only told his side of story on TV an hour or so ago) but the article is missing a lot of recent relevant info, hence it needs updating/expanding. The-Pope (talk) 09:17, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
It would be more helpful to add comments to the talk page, then, rather than just throwing a tag at it with no explanation. PamD 11:41, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Anyone in Australian who was interested in Dank would understand what was missing, as would anyone in the world who googled him. I didn't have time today to do anything more detailed. Tagging it made sure that either the originator, cleanup crews or myself later would get back to it, and it wouldn't be forgotten or lost. The originator has now added some of the extra info. The-Pope (talk) 12:21, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
No: tagging it with no explanation made it likely the tag would be removed by someone who's used to seeing careless overtagging (like "all plot" on something with no plot description, "unref" where there are sources etc). Not all Wikipedia editors are Australian. PamD 16:13, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your concern. I spend most of my time here improving articles to remove tags. I rarely tag articles myself. I regularly see incorrectly tagged UBLP articles, but unless I see numerous by a single editor I don't query their motives. I did this one for the reasons listed above. And all the of the potential "targets" that I listed above, the originator, you as a clean up editor, and me, have since improved the article. Collaboration works, however you find articles. Deletion of page Guo Jun

Dear Pope,

I see that the page 'Guo Jun' was restored and then immediately deleted by you.

As I said in my original request for restoration, the lack of compliance is wholly due to my ignorance. In retrospect, I should have availed myself of the documentation but, not having created the page in the first place, it didn't occur to me to do so. It was a mistake that I won't repeat.

Having reviewed the material that you supplied via my talk page, I fully understand the reasons for the subsequent deletion. I can see now that, from your point of view, it was particularly egregious.

However, I would still like to have a page for Venerable Guo Jun. I can see two options and I would very grateful for your comments. First, I can write a new article in my own words based on the information available on the website of Mahabodhi Monastery in Singapore, of which Ven. Guo Jun is the abbot. Naturally, the new article would include a reference to that site. Second, the information on the monastery website could be made public domain, in which cause it could, as I understand the Wikipedia rules, be copied verbatim as long as a reference was supplied.

Can you confirm whether either or both of these options would be compliant? While I have read the general material about article writing, I am uncertain as to how it applies in the particular case.

Regards, Aglindstrom (talk) 03:30, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, I didn't actually delete the page, I only tagged it as a copy of the other website. Rewriting in your own words is always the best idea, but you really need to satisfy the general notability guideline by showing that significant coverage exists in independent reliable sources, ie not just his own website or one closely associated with him. A good idea might be to use the articles for creation tool that can assist and "approve" the article before it is published. Regards, The-Pope (talk) 04:23, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Sorry. I misread the log attached to the deleted page. It was Explicit who deleted it again after you restored it due to the blatant copy and paste job. I will try the AFC route. Thanks for your comment. Aglindstrom (talk) 05:05, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Australia Betting Treads

I don't see why you deleted the update about Australia rules football culture. Is is very relative to the topic and shows a massive trend in how the game is evolving with current technology. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.148.61.152 (talk) 00:55, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

if your "update" mentioned the AFL's sponsorship deals and the resulting conflict of interest, the AFL integrity division, fines for players and coaches who bet on the game, exotic bets, the ACC investigation report or problem gambling issues; and was referenced to independent reliable sources, then I would not have touched it. But it didn't. Your update basically added the name if a single company that I've never heard of, so I assumed it is a company that you are associated with. Most office footy tipping comps that I've been in for the past ten years have used the main online websites, not posters or local software. Maybe you've already made your mind up (I think I can recall you declining a nomination or two in the past?), but if you're on the fence I'd encourage you to give it a shot. RfA looks like a lot of hassle and it can be pretty brutal to some candidates, but it's been relatively OK over the last few weeks (lots of good editors have passed with >90%) and if I managed to get through it I'd think you would – you have much better 'credentials' than me. The tools can be pretty handy at times as well. Jenks24 (talk) 13:52, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

I have considered it, and I probably should consider what I say here, as I think RFA uses the US cop show approach (anything you say can be used against you... but you don't have the right to an attorney!). My feelings on the matter are

  • a) yes it could be useful, but I've got on for 7 years without it, and there aren't that many times I really wished I had it, so whilst it wouldn't be a "no use" RFA like Carrite's recent RFA, I would struggle to really explain why I want it. I !vote in any XFD/RM I'm interested in, I don't want to supervote in those I'm not interested in. Seeing deleted articles to work out G4s, closing/deleting CSDs, PRODs and editing protected templates/files would be about it.
  • b) I'm not one to want to be scrutinised. That's why I haven't pushed an article to GA (and given the amount of cleanup to be done, why polish the silverware when the walls are crumbling). I really don't want to play the RFA 20 questions game and have to give sample answers to hypothetical examples (7 years of real examples aren't enough?). I don't really want to spend a week doing that and not actually improving this place. I've keep an occasional eye on the RFA reform and I'd love someone out there to say "you know what, you are trustworthy, have an extra user right, stuff up and we'll take it off you". But I doubt it will ever happen. Maybe If I make it to top place on the Scottywong list... (damn those couple of no-edit summary edits and not enough RPP/AIV/AFD edits!)
  • c) Every time I've been asked I've just been involved in a bit of an "issue". Last time it was the whole Perth move, this time it's the WP:CRIC Englishness course. Not major blow ups, but enough to maybe put people off, and I've seen how RfA's can be derailed.

So thanks for the votes of confidence, if I ever do decide, I'm not going to ask to be nominated, it will be a self-nom, as I'm not one to rely on others (no cabals for me!). But not now. The-Pope (talk) 14:26, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the detailed reply! You piqued my interest, and I had a more detailed look through your edits. I'm impressed with what I see. For example, your AfD contributions, are spot on, your CSD log looks good, and your footballer stubs all look like quality work. It's a shame the edit counter doesn't show your most-edited articles, because I would have quite liked to see them. The Cricket and Englishness thing is a concern, but if you submitted an RfA now I think you would still pass, as that and the Perth thing seem like minor blips on an otherwise solid record. You don't have to be super-active in clearing admin backlogs to have a good case for getting the bit - deleting the occasional PROD-ed or CSD-ed article is really reason enough. Also, the questions in RfA needn't take up your whole week, and if your answers to the questions are as detailed as your reply above, you probably won't get asked that many anyway. Hi There the pope

Hi, the site that has been externally linked is not a temporary site and ive known of the linked url for a few years. Licence was obtained from AEMO for use of their data (had contacted the owner a few years back), the link is relevant to the articles. I dont see how this is an issue, and to me this does not seem like a personal page. If you view the page it is clearly relevent, it may give viewers an idea of the contribution the power stations are making to the National Elctricity Market grid and the page is also a valuable resource. Some pages ive linked such as nuclear power in Australia may not be completely relevant and I understand the removal from those pages.

Cutajarc (talk) 11:19, 23 April 2013 (UTC) Cutajarc

There is nothing on that page but a wall of numbers. Put a link to the AEMO site directly on contributing power station articles, they at least have pretty graphs and lots of historical data, not just raw numbers. And as much as we assume good faith here we really can't allow links to gotdns.com addresses - it isn't 2005 anymore - we should only link to clearly official sites. The-Pope (talk) 11:27, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

- The data on AEMO's site isnt direct realtime data but rather graphs that update every half an hour. Visitors to an article would be able to corelate the capacity of a power station with the current electrical demands of each state which would give them some sort of idea of the contribution margins of those power stations. I dont undertand the problem with a gotdns.com address, the data provided via the page seems acurate and correct. Aahh yes, one of my early articles from the pre-inline citations days. You'll note I did go back and find one source and cite it. As for Gil, I have been trying to hunt down his biography from about a decade ago and use that to expand the article. --Roisterer (talk) 15:20, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Deletion review of Ben Duscher article

Just to let you now, I have contacted the editor who deleted the Ben Duscher article as below: Re: Deletion of Ben Duscher article You decided to delete this article although point 3 of the following criteria appeared to be met. Could you please provide your reasoning as I plan a deletion review.

Athletes who compete in Australian rules football are presumed notable if they meet any of the criteria below

AFL players

Hey, good tag-teaming on the articles on new AFL players! StAnselm (talk) 23:11, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

no probs, thanks for starting them. If you could try to include an inline cited independent ref (ie not to an AFL website) in each article, that will keep any potential unreferenced issues away. In case you wonder how I find them, I'm not actually stalking you, I just have Special:RecentChangesLinked/List_of_current_AFL_team_squads bookmarked, so they show up with a nice big "N" next to them. That reminds me, I (or you?) should update List of AFL debuts in 2013 for round 7. Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 00:03, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for offering to take up the baton on the GA nomination of Danny Green, and apologies for how long it has taken me to do the review, which is now on the talk page. It ought to be reasonably straightforward, even if you are not a topic expert. Oldelpaso (talk) 17:01, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

WikiProjects

Hi again, I was just wondering how I could join the Wikiproject page about Australian football and also how you can get barnstars?

Thanks Jack.normo (talk) 03:05, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Wikiprojects are fairly informal, you can "sign up" at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian rules football/List of participants, but more importantly, add the Project talk page, WT:AFL to your WP:Watchlist, so you can be aware of what's happening and if anyone has any questions. WP:AWNB is the Australian project notice board that is useful too. Finally, there are often WikiProject userboxes that you can add to your page. To find other WikiProjects, go to the talk pages of pages you like and see what projects the pages are associated with the page. Nice start on the Jack page - see if you can add the references, links & categories, as per the Richards page. Copy, paste & edit - it's the easiest and best way to learn. Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 14:11, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Ok thanks. I added signed myself up on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian rules football/List of participants so does that mean I am apart of the wikiproject or do I have get accepted by someone or something?. I have put those talk pages on my watchlist so thanks for that and I also I have the EVERY AFL/VFL PLAYER SINCE 1897 book and I looked at the Morely Kidgell thing someone was talking about and I had the same answer as you so it seems we have the same book (just saying haha). Thanks again Jack.normo (talk) 04:42, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Goal

Just saw your Edit at Australian Rules Football. It seems incredibly logical. I've never understood the idea that a goal is something one defends. In normal usage, outside football codes, goals are things we aim for. How did any football code end up thinking the opposite? HiLo48 (talk) 18:41, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

I have a book "The Winter Game" by Robert Pascoe where he analyses the unique features of Aussie rules compare to other football codes, and uses the era, place and culture of the people who wrote the rules to explain why we don't have an offside rule etc. Might have to read it again to see if he mentions the our or your goal issue. In soccer, where the goal keeper "owns" his goal, if you use goal as a place, then you do attack the opposing goal, like attacking his castle, or home. But that is of course at odds with the common meaning of goal meaning objective. Times like this I'm glad that English is my first language! The-Pope (talk) 17:00, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying the notability guidelines. On a similar note, I'm lost on how to list on AfD both the general pages and the biographies' page a page that has previously had a discussion, in this case 2010, but requires resubmission because of revelations of the accuracy of some of the statements. When I follow the instructions the 2010 discussion appears, without any option of noting the new discussion. Any guidance? --Ddragovic (talk) 15:14, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

It was actually the 3rd nomination. I've moved the page to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Daniel Street (3rd nomination) and added the standard header. Your best bet, and by far the easiest method, is to turn on the WP:TWINKLE gadget and then it is just a single button click and fill in the form. The-Pope (talk) 16:56, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Question

I know that you edit to {tl|toi}} in Kyoung Jun Lee. I wonder something about reference of Kyoung Jun Lee.

  1. It have a lot of Publications and achievement such as books, peer-reviewed papers, and honors. Why are they not appreciated as valid reference?
  2. According to Wikipedia:Notability (academics), 'The person holds or has held a named chair appointment' is considered to have a notability. Lee is Full Professor(정교수) of Kyunghee University. Why is it appreciated as basis?--Reiro (talk) 15:56, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
I tagged that article over two years ago. It was a likely conflict of interest as the main author was named very similar to the professor. I now avoid debating notability of academics, as I find that they are often autobiographies, I don't know what is a notable or a paid submission journal, and very few meet the general notability guideline. Feel free to edit it as you want, I'm not watching it. The-Pope (talk) 16:38, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Freo Home chevrons.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:Freo Home chevrons.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. You know what, I'm all about basketball on wikipedia and every basketball page where there is this situation, a comma is used ie [2]. I guess with AFL players, comma aren't used (as per your examples). And to be perfectly honest, I don't mind moving it back; I really wasn't aware of that. I'll even move it back now. DaHuzyBru (talk) 17:38, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, no doubt about it being a US vs ENG (or AUS) thing. I'm just used to it being "basketball, born XXXX" which i think is better and like you said, depending on the sport, it seems to be different. It be nice to have consensus on this all over wikipedia – ie not just sport – but it will never be the case. DaHuzyBru (talk) 04:11, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

question about the AFL biography infobox

do we list only AFL teams in it? --SuperJew (talk) 19:54, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

some people say no, I say maybe. I wouldn't list Chris Judd's single game for East Perth or Pav's one appearance for South or Fev's games for the Pigeons, but Mzungu won a B&F for Perth & Ballantyne a Sandover at Peel. Going back a bit, Barry Cable and Brian Peake were celebrated for playing their 400th combined WAFL/VFL/state games. So for me it's a yes if the time at the non AFL team is truly notable. For your area of interest, you'd have find a way to clearly differentiate Collingwood AFL vs VFL, but i think someone did something similar for Choco Williams. Finding reliable sources for lower level leagues can be tougher, we are spoilt at AFL level for generally very accurate stats websites. There was a little discussion about this somewhere recently, at Template talk:Infobox AFL biography and and older one at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Australian_rules_football/Archive_5#Including_games_played_in_various_leagues_in_table? No worries, all I want is mature, respectful collaboration and no name calling, insults or single bloody mindedness. From either the soccer, AFL or NRL sides. Just a note about your edits, you have to be a little bit careful about the whole Wills/Harrison 185# codification and influences story. I think that there are some historians who have published theories at odds with others or even dis-proven. You might find that if you quote the wrong reference, some editors (who have studied it a lot more than me) might revert you. The-Pope (talk) 14:27, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
