Unreferenced footballer BLPs

Regarding this, if there anyway we can get that article automatically updated? It used to happen but that bot manfunctioned back in 2013 and the bot owner is semi-retired. GiantSnowman 16:03, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

I've given up, and just use the WMF Labs Tools Cleanup list. It updates weekly, has a heap of other easily fixed errors listed too. I've managed to keep the AFL list down to under 7% of our articles with cleanup issues and almost always 0 UBLPs, Football only has 40 UBLPs. If enough of us use it, we could ask User:CleanupWorklistBot if certain high-usage projects are updated more often, or mirroring the output to updating a wiki page, not just the labs page. The Jock photo

Hey, I took the risk of uploading because Jock died before 1955, and most of his coaching career took place before 1946. I think I have some books which feature the image, will go through to confirm date. As for statue photos, I think they convey the legendary status of the players better than low quality scans. I'm usually very particular about the images I choose, in this case, there's a wide range of skills on display, it's not all speckies or basic portraits. James Hird

Sorry about that – I got your earlier pointer at my talk page. My point is that, despite not being allowed into the club, James Hird was still an employee at Essendon during that time, as opposed to Ross Lyon, who had no affiliation with Fremantle until he was appointed as senior coach there. Footy ladder templates

Hey mate,

I noticed the current footy ladder template is a pain to update. You have to update Position, Games Played, Wins, Losses, Draws, Points For, Points Against, Percentage and Points. Surely, there must be away to enter only position, wins, losses, draws, points for and against and have a formula work out the rest (games=wins+losses+draws, points=wins*4+draws*2, percentage=pts for/pts against*100)? As is done in the soccer ladders (for example). Has such a thing been tried in footy?

G'day User:SuperJew, the extremely poorly documented expr: function is what you need. I've given it a trial at User:The-Pope/sandboxLadder, which is called by User:The-Pope/sandboxLaddercall. The only issue I can see with it at the moment is that I haven't been able to make it show 2 decimal points on the % column, as per tradition. Johann Wagner notability

Hey, I see that you removed the notability tag for Johann Wagner as he was the first winner of the recruit, I somewhat agree with you. I'm just wondering what your opinion is if he gets delisted without playing a game, do you think winning the recruit is notable enough to have an article? (I hope this doesn't come across as me sounding like a smart-ass, I'm just genuinely curious what you think just in case the aforementioned situation happens). Probably yes. Not sure if it's still the case, but I seem to remember that the standard for most reality shows is that non-winners are redirected to the show if that's all they are known for, but if they win (or have a significant career post show) then they can qualify to have their own page. And, despite the # of refs in the article at the moment being poor, a google search finds plenty of refs from both during the show, after he won, when he was started training and when he played in the pre-season, so I would argue that GNG is met too. So, whilst I generally believe in the delete 'em when they're delisted idea, I think this one is the exception to that rule. Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 14:14, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Rising star nominee in career highlights?

Hi, I was just wondering what your opinion is on whether a rising star nomination is worthy of being noted in the career highlights in the infoxbox? I'm really sitting on the fence, and I've noticed players within the last 1-2 years who have been nominated all have it in their infobox, but most of the older players don't, it's all over the place, so I think it's good for it to be one or the other for consistency. For most young players getting it now, it is a highlight of their career so far. For a Judd, Ablett, Pav, not so much. For players like Greg Harding or Nick Carter (1996 AFL Rising Star noms), it probably is the highlight of their career. Like most things here, I don't really care about consistency, so I'm not going to religously add it to every player over the past 20 odd years, but I think it's fair enough to add and I wouldn't remove it. It's one step up from TAC Cup/WAFL/SANFL awards or flags players win... OK when they haven't done much else, can be removed when the start getting lots of AFL level highlights. I would like to know why you removed the comma from "Nathan Brown (Australian footballer, born 1976)". In association football-related articles we add a comma after "(footballer".

I moved it in May 2012, when commas were discouraged. The comma preferred guideline was only agreed to last year, and like most rules here, with very few people involved in deciding the new consensus. The-Pope (talk) 10:44, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Bill Campbells

Hey, saw you dabbing the Bill Campbells and noticed you used "(Australian footballer, born XXXX)". Generally when I've used year of birth I've just gone with "(footballer, born XXXX)" even when there were soccer players or what have you of the same name. Just wondering if either way was the standard practice? I'm open to either one really, but consistency is probably the important thing (like those damn commas, which I've grudgingly jumped on board with). hmmm, not sure... I think it was because I thought the original (Australian footballer) one was notable enough to not need dabbing, so I matched it with the (, born 1904). Then I realised that the existing one was only a single game player, so I moved him to match as neither was the (sub)primary topic. Probably could drop the Australians. Diagram help

Hello, have you read James Coventry's recently published Time and Space? On page 8 there's a diagram of a tactical manoeuvre performed by Tom Wills—the famous coup de main. Do you know anyone who could create a quality svg duplicate and upload to Commons? I think it would make a great addition to the playing style and captaincy section which I'm currently building, but there doesn't seem to be a go-to Wiki user for Australian rules football diagrams. Hi there, I am currently reading the ebook, so didn't realise that there were illustrations, as they are all at the end. Was that image published back at the time? If so, then it will be public domain, so we could upload directly from the book. If not, then Coventry would own the copyright (I think, that would apply to photos, I'm guessing it applies to illustrations too). I'm not really that artistic or creative to build diagrams myself. Yes, many would have scored. But, matter is who is notable who is not. Time of India is India's biggest selling newspaper, which published it. Another broadcaster is Delhi Daredevils, which is also an IPL team. Will you be able to know the scores from around the globe, if media would not be available? Certainly no. Many people are there, who can be better cricketers than Sachin Tendulkar, but he played before media, so he is now. I'm adding reference to it, then what's the problem. Yes, I accept that it's school tournament score, but it is registered with required authority of BCCI, so is authentic. If there exists any record like that, should be posted. It shouldn't be ignored. Some people may ignore many prodigies, if it would be the matter; there would not be any Wikipedia article on Prodigy. Anticipating a tangible reply. I am not doubting that it occurred, but it is impossible to be sure that it is a record, as similar levels of play elsewhere are not recorded in a single database such as ESPN Cricinfo or Cricket Archive. For that reason, the records section on the Twenty20 page clearly states "include all first-class-equivalent level Twenty20 matches" School cricket is not "first-class-equivalent level", so it cannot be included. The page might not be a recreation, but the subject of the article is still not notable, according to either WP:GNG, which requires significant coverage (not just a mention in the OZfootball list) in independent reliable sources, nor WP:NFOOTBALL, which requires footballers to have played in a fully professional league. The Paraguayan Cuarta Division is not fully professional. This article has been created and deleted many, many times. It's time to stop. Lelo isn't notable. Requesting your aid

I was hoping to ask for your help. At the Jobe Watson page (due to this whole Brownlow issue), an IP editor is repeatedly adding something along the lines of, "the same year the Doping Violations occurred", with this same grammar, next to the year of 2012. Now, I already fixed the structure of this paragraph (and most of the article, although I am yet to move onto fixing the sources), so I don't see why it is a necessary addition regardless, but this user, who has resurfaced as Basetornado (an account that appeared to have previously been used only for vandalism), seems to think that this addition is noteworthy. But I think that there's more to it than that: you would remember an IP editor from a similar IP address going onto the talk page and throwing in accusations of him as a "drug cheat", and I have a gut feeling that these two incidents are linked. That's literally all of the proof that I have of that, but this user seems to go about this with a more personal mindset, claiming on my own talk page that I'm only removing the edits because Watson's my favourite player, while refusing to drop the issue and saying that this addition is more factual than it is biased and poorly formatted.

The only reason why I'm doing this is because I don't want to violate WP:3RR, and this user just won't drop the issue. I've tried to point this user in the right direction, but he/she is ignoring my advice and continuing to implement this statement on the page, and I feel like the use of the word "doping", in this case, is biased. But like I said, I thought that it was an unnecessary addition anyway, purely because it messes with the flow of the sentence and the section was fine how it was. For all I know, you might already know about all of this – I was just hoping that you could help me out. Sorry if this comes at a bad time, but you're an expert in this field and I know that you're someone who I can trust, and I was hoping that you could help resolve this issue for me. Thank you. John Butcher Controversy

After noting that you have deleted the helpful and truthful addition to John Butcher's Wikipedia page, , I have become extremely distressed. The information that was added is 100% true, all the events that were depicted took place in 2015. I have been in contact with a number of Church of Johnny Butcher members, and they too feel that you are wrong in your actions. Furthermore, if you would have bothered to check the authenticity of the information that was provided upon the page, there would have been no doubt this encounter would not need to happen. There is in fact an Instagram page, which is run by devoted Ministers and disciples of the Church. Early this year (2016) the page was in fact noticed by the Ollie Wines of PAFC, and possibly a number of his acquaintances.

In sum, the helpful addition to John Butcher's page is 100% true and is important to a multitude of individuals. Most importantly, I feel that the Lord himself would be in a serious state of distress if a non-believer such as yourself was to blatantly try to cross this off his page. This religious discrimination and bias from you (THe Pope), is utterly disgusting and I begin to question the worth of your contributions towards Wikipedia, as a whole. If a person such as yourself prefers to delete valid and truthful contributions on Wikipedia, so be it, but let it be in vain. You are in the hands of the Lord now, your soul will be cast in the bottomless pit, as Essendon Football Club is at this current moment. Note that these articles come one month after the NZ Test Tour (and roughly when we had the first discussion on this issue), so they are still calling him those names. As long as his average sticks at 95.5, I can well imagine that "The Don" will be his nickname. And it will certainly do so at least until he plays his next test match in a few months.

If you don't like Bradam, then that is understandable. But "Sir Adam Voges" and "The Don" are repeatedly used, and I'm pretty sure that they will stick. I have provided evidence for this above. I await your prompt reply. If I don't hear a reply from you within the next couple of days with valid counterpoints, then I will add it back to the article (at least, "The Don" and "Sir Adam Voges" but not "Bradam").

Thanks for your comment. I respectfully disagree that "no one else agrees with me". At least one person agrees with me on WikiProject Cricket, and a couple of others are ambivalent/don't express strong disapproval. Moreover, what I have written is true, so I don't see why it is not encyclopaedic. The entire purpose of an encyclopaedia is to provide information. As many people in the cricketing community are referring to Voges as "The Don" and "Sir Adam Voges", it is notable. It's not just tabloid since his teammates are doing so. I consider this issue to be important and notable, so I find it offensive that you dismiss it as "not constructive" simply because you disagree. That is condescending and rude.

I have discussed with numerous editors, including yourself, the reasons for my edits. I have made numerous efforts to do so each and every time my edits have been reverted on the relevant talk pages. I have changed the wording of my edits and added citations when there were disagreements or requests to do so. I am making serious efforts to reach a consensus between my proposed edits and other users. I find you rude and disrespectful. There are facts, and there are encyclopedic facts. Most of your additions are already mentioned (in an encyclopaedic way) in the Test career section. The factual high average is mentioned in the lead. The tabloid opinions of journalists are not needed in the opening paragraphs. If a Sachin, Ponting, Chappell or Boycott etc came out and seriously compared his batting to Bradman or Sachin. Without qualification about the quality of the opponents or few innings, then maybe their opinion would be suitable for the Test career section, but that hasn't happened. It's all throw away lines, tongue-in-cheek banter. It isn't encyclopaedic. I've been here for ten years with 70000 edits. Learn what's acceptable before telling me to "cease and desist". @The-Pope I don't understand your logic here. Ponting, Sachin, Chappell etc. were great batsman. However, that doesn't somehow mean that their opinions hold more weight, especially in the context of an encylopaedia. There are people who have been making the comparisons, whose job it is to write their opinions in the major Australian news and cricket outlets. If you think it is a problem in the lead, then we can mention it in the middle of the article somewhere, where it might be more relevant. I am happy to negotiate. However, as an experienced editor you should know that in consensus-driven editing, there should be an effort made by both parties to attain a middle ground. I'm not saying put exactly what I wrote in the article, but some kind of middle ground where we can note that some people are comparing him to greats, without necessarily emphasising it too strongly, would make me content and leave the matter. I hope we can reach this kind of a consensus.   • I live in Australia and still have no idea about the legal usage of II or III, Sr. or Jr.. There has to be some legal precedent for this that would solve the issue. I know that elsewhere on this encyclopaedia, Jr. is only allowed if the two individuals have exactly the same name. Compare George W. Bush to George H. W. Bush and Donald Trump to Donald Trump Jr.. It seems that Sr. isn't really used that often, presumably because it isn't a legal name, as you said. Perhaps the reasoning is that Jr. is enough differentiation from the original.     • the only convention is WP:COMMONNAME. What is the person must commonly referred as. I showed through a simple google search that Pat Cash's Dad was referred to as Pat Cash Sr relatively often since his son became more famous. His son, AFAIK, was never called Pat Cash Jr as most tennis people wouldn't have ever heard of his Dad. Compare that to the Gary Abletts.       • While it's true that that convention applies to the article title, within the article itself doesn't it have to be mentioned that the person is "generally known" as such-and-such if it is not their birth name? If I'm right, then some articles do not follow this style because they have simply fallen through the cracks. Still, thus could just be the preference of the involved editors as opposed to Wikipedian policy. I wish I could truly get to the bottom of this. That's a fairly silly rule then, isn't it. I guess 5882 remaining links will remain confusing and misleading in the articles, as I'm not doing them manually. This task also isn't suitable for a BOT as 951 of the links where 2 or more players have the same name have the URL _smith1.html, not just smith.html, so I've been checking for those as I go. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest!
