I've responded again. My question is whether or not there are actual sentences in the article that are driving your issue with the reference quality or just a preference. I ask because if it's a preference ok, but it's not a policy, and if you have actual issues just make them clear and I will further reference the statement. Classical music

Hi there, I am writing you because you were one of the contributors to the discussion last year about moving Classical music to European classical music. Well, the decision to do that did not have great effects - it has created a lot of confusion. Specifically, people editing articles that contain references are almost exclusively using the link classical music, which of course leads to a disambig page. They literally always mean European classical music in their context. So, it is creating a nightmare for us folks at Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links, where Classical music remains the number one offender as far as the number of articles that link to a disambig page. Which shouldn't happen. I think the crux of the issue is that English-language editors think "classical music" and they know what they mean - and we are trying to tell them that they really mean something else.

(Deep breath) So, we need to try to solve this issue. My inclination is to move European classical music back to Classical music, and then move the disambig page to Classical music (disambiguation), which currently just redirects to Classical music. Thanks for your response! And frankly, that is my point exactly. There is only ambiguity for a sliver of a percentage of English-language Wikipedians. Almost everyone who says or writes "classical music" means... the thing you moved to European classical music. So in effect, you created more ambiguity than existed before. It has been brought up at Talk:Classical music. There is a whole new set of editors wrestling with this, most of whom have come in from WP:DPL after seeing the breadth of the problem. I do see your point as well, Tuf-Kat, but I think we may discover that we can obtain a consensus around returning to the previous state of things. I guess we have to ask ourselves - If you asked a 100 English-language editors to define or cite an example of classical music, how many would come up with "Beethoven" and how many would come up with "Karnataka Sangeeth"? 99-1? So in essense the question is, how do we define "potentially confusing"? A 1% chance of being confusing? In my humble opinion, no. --Aguerriero (talk) 14:35, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

So, it looks like the majority of editors agreed with my proposition. However, I'm really torn because I feel that you offered very thought-provoking reasons not to move the page back. Add to the sitation that someone's bot recently went through and fixed just about every disambig, so that is no longer an issue. I am willing to concede that perhaps the need to be precise trumps usability issues in this case. About the article Legionnaires' disease

Regarding your comment on the Talk:Legionnaires' disease: "I think it is public domain. See here, which I think applies to the source to this article. Tokerboy".

Tokerboy, with all due respect, I think you should be made aware that Wikipedia has had two existing articles for quite a while named Legionella and Legionellosis. The author of the new article Legionnaires' disease is User:Noigel2000. Noigel got tired of having his edits to the two existing articles corrected and of being admonished for some of them. So he wrote his own article which is based entirely on the multitude of pages on his own Internet website.

Here is his self-introduction from his User talk:Noigel2000 page: "Who am I or what am I. Some call me a Legioneela Advocate, Others a Legionella Nut or Legionella Fan some stronger than that." You added "sea in Welsh" to this article. Sea doesn't sound like a Welsh word. Maybe you meant Dylan Eil Ton is sea in English but that clearly isn't true either. I'm confused.

Thanks for your response. The encyclopedia you linked to says that Dylan means sea but the other sources I've found don't mention this or say it is a misapprehension. The only word for sea in Welsh dictionaries I can find is the common modern word, môr; gweilgi, and aig. I suspect someone just thought it meant sea because it is part of the name of the sea god, so I'm going to remove it.

Actually, it says on Dylan that it comes from dy (great) and llanw (sea but dictionaries, even two early Welsh ones, suggest it means tide), and this is supported by other sources, and makes sense, so I'll change it to great tide.

RE: Johnny Lee Clary - Please help

Hey there, my name is Nick, my username is Potters house and I have encountered a problem with trying to provide any information about Johnny Lee Clary. I have posted this post off to other staff members also. I am not sure if this is the best route to resolve this, but can think of no other way.

The article Johnny Lee Clary has been deleted. I have known Johnny through telephone conversations and email for a short time now (about 3-4 months). He recently came and shared his life story in for our church group for the first time just two weeks ago. Before I met Johnny I became interested in his story i.e. his conversion from the head of the KKK in the US, to being a Christian Minister who now teaches against race hate groups. I found the article Johnny Lee Clary as it still is today, deleted, except for some small talk. If you read the talk you see what I have said at the time (notice I have gotten no reply, probable my fault as I don’t know heaps about WIKI policy). From my understanding Johnny Lee Clary was posting as The KingOfDixie and looks like he tried to change a few things on Wiki concerning the KKK. While this is a controversial subject, Johnny being the former leader of the KKK would probably know a thing or two and be able to contibute, but that’s another story. He eventually made an article about himself i.e. Johnny Lee Clary. Johnny being quite new to Wiki and ignorant of rules of conduct found himself at odds with some admins and had his site deleted.

Whilst observing Johnny over the last 3-4 months I have noticed that he is very outspoken against race hate groups such as the Neo Nazis, Skinheads, KKK etc. This, more often than not, lands Johnny in the hot seat. He has experienced persecution from racist groups for his departure from the KKK and voiced opinions against these racist organizations on his webpage, www.xkkk.org. Johnny has also received multiple death threats.

Because of his bold stance against these racist groups Johnny has become accustomed to hatred directed at him by those same groups. Johnny concluded that perhaps the guy who deleted the page Johnny Lee Clary was a white supremist. I am hoping to clear this up. Before he told me this, I started to create J L Clary, after hearing nothing from posting in user talk on Johnny Lee Clary's article. I wasn't 10 minutes into the J L Clary article when it was issued a deletion notice, and then before I had time to reply (about 5 minutes) it was deleted! I was amazed. I told this to Johnny and he said the main reason he was told that he couldn't have an article was because he was not prominent enough.

Johnny has a very famous testimony and has been on multiple TV shows like Oprah, Donahue, Jerry Springer, etc, and even recently when he preached in our town he made front page news, a double spread on his life, and the local ABC interviewed him live, which is not bad for our town (LISMORE NSW Australia) See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Kerry&dir=prev&offset=20050327125109&limit=500&action=history .

When David Wilkerson came to our town hardly anyone knew or cared, yet David Wilkerson is allowed an article (and rightfully so), but more people know of Johnny. As to whether he is famous or not, just Google search him and see all the TV interviews and radio interviews he does. He hangs with some of the most prominent Christian leaders in Australia. Besides this, just being the former KKK leader should be enough for an article (he doesn't even get a mention in the KKK one, and would be deleted). He was also a Pro Wrestler. So he is prominent in Christian circles, he is prominent amongst race hate groups, and he is also prominent in the WWE wrestling.

Johnny asked me to test the waters for him to see if he was being persecuted by someone from a race hate group. So I created some sites, John Clary Wade Watts and Operation Colorblind - the name of Johnny's Ministry. These have been fine until yesterday. I cannot understand why these sites are just issued a deletion notice? Just because they mention JLC? I was hoping to discuss these things but they are just deleted. The one on Wade Watts is about a black gospel preacher who was one of the leaders in the civil rights movement in the US and was good friends with Martin Luther King. He took Johnny Clary under his wing and even ordained Johnny as a minister (to this day Johnny is the only white man ordained in the All Black Baptist Church). But his article is up for deletion because I mentioned Clary and had a link.

That is why I am writing to you to see if you can help. It seems to me that the person(s) deleting all articles which even mention Johnny Lee Clary has an agenda. I thought that wikipedia admins had to keep a neutral stance on every article. It seems like this guy has a vendetta against JLC. Why delete the Wade Watts article. That is guilt by association and could be proof that all deletions are because of racial discrimination! I hope this is not the case and would think that it is politically motivated, as Johnny is a strong supporter of George Bush and Antaeus Feldspar of Kerry.

My hope is that Johnny will be able to have an article like any other famous person, minister, former KKK leader, or pro wrestler, and that Johnny and anyone connected with him and his ministry will in future have certain rules set in place that do not allow the wholesale deletion of the articles associated with him, but that they will be at least discussed.

I thank you for reading this long winded post. I have only been using WIKI for about a year myself so I need your help, I don't really know what else to do. I hope you can help. I personally think that Johnny's story is one that is beneficial to the cause of reconciliation between races and to the3 unity of society as a whole. It would be a shame if WIKI became known for having covert racists. Of course I hope that this is a misunderstanding and that all will be cleared up soon.

re Music of Italy

Re the terminology list. My pleasure to help out.

You made some substantial changes to the section on popular music. Some of it is inaccurate, though. If the Garland encylopedia says that "Composers like [such as] Francesco Paolo Tosti and Gaetano Donizetti popularized Neapolitan songs, both within Italy and abroad..." then it's dead wrong. Those two had little to do with the popularization of the music, with the exception of a single song by Donizetti, popular in Italy but not abroad. Maybe there's ome ny Tosti. The great popularization abroad was coincident with emigration after 1870 as well as the influence of the singer, Enrico Caruso. There may now be a few other things that require some attention, as well. I think I liked the section better the way it was.

Re your:

Create a section for musicology, historiography and the like. (Music of the United States has one, as an example)

Is that the section called Scholarship? Yes, that is possible to do.

I have never tried that but I can learn, I guess.

It is very long, yes, and in the words of the contributer who recently put that fine stuff up about early music, it makes the article "lopsided". He might be able to edit it. Re "Some of the most important stuff from there ought to be incorporated into the classical section." Probably true, but that was the way the article started out some months ago--that is, the Classical and History sections were sort of one and the same (which makes good sense in the commonly understood meaning of "classical"--a lot of it is old and very historical!), but you didn't like it that way--you wanted history, classical, folk and popular, as if history and classical were separate. In any event, what you are suggesting is a major editing and rewrite. Actually, I have a feeling that the article is starting to drift out of control--that is, it may be getting worse rather than better. There are only thee or four of us working on it. Maybe we can talk about this on the ducussion page of the article itself. Jeffmatt 16:00, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Template:Cameroonianmusic

Cameroon is not just a francophone country, there is an anglophone part as well. For traditional music, the francophone/anglophone-distinction is not important. In modern music, there are alsospecific forms of modern music in the anglophone part (some forms of highlife, e.g. bottle dance). There are also examples of makossa with pidgin texts. So does it make sense to enumerate francophone countries in this template? I suggest including a link to African Music in all the "Music of <African country>"-Articles and linking them all from there. A template could be created for this. Nannus 23:01, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

On [3] Africa is divided into several regions. I don't know if this division was made based on musical style differences, but this might be a starting point. The western, central and southern region on that site seem to coincide both with dance stile regions I know and with pop music style regions. Nannus 19:29, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Folk music vs. Traditional music

I strongly disagree with the redirection of "traditional music" to "folk music"! A separate page on "traditional music" is needed. The term folk music is defined as meaning music made by common people, i.e. nonprofesional musicians. The word is in this sense often applied to African music although a lot of African music is not folk music in this sense. There are many forms of music performed by professional musicians. There is sacred music and courtly music and while these forms of music can be called traditional music, they are not folk music. So it is simply wrong to consider the two terms to mean the same. In older ethnomusical literature, the term folk music is often used, but in newer literature, the distinction is made, for good reasons. In the case of blues and jazz, the term folk music might be appropriate. In the case of Malian griot music or of Amadinda Xylophone music from Buganda it is certainly not. The same probably holds for music traditions from other parts of the world. Therefore (sorry) I'm planing to remove the redirect and make this an article again. Nannus 04:40, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tuf-kat, I just read your page, & thought I'd leave you a short response. No you are not the only Wikipedian who thinks Userboxes are dumb -- in fact I think there are a lot of Wikipedians who would agree with you. But not me: although I have some on my user page I really don't have a strong opinion about them, although if you held my wife at gunpoint I might be persuaded to say they are okay.

I was half-hoping that you might have made an appearance at Wikimania last weekend. A bunch of us old-timers -- the "Old Fogies" as I called us -- got together & talked about life before the ArbCom & other developments. (Danny asked me if I thought those days were better; I gave him a confused & conflicted answer, which reflects just how I feel about the question.) I'm hoping that you can make the next one I can afford to go to, & you can join with the group to answer such important questions as "Who was the worst troll in the history of Wikipedia?" Can you please explain what these pages is? It seems to be claiming that music featured articles have to be nominated there, when in fact all featured articles come from the FAC. Peer Review for Music of Italy

Hi, Tuf-Kat. Are we getting any hits? Or am I looking in the wrong place? On another matter, you got me interested in dance, so I started a Weapon dance article that may turn out to be worthwhile once I learn how to dance. A kind person User:Jared Hunt has a different approach to referencing than our article. (He jumped in and loaded biblio templates into the body of the editable text, itself.) As you can see from the weapon dance iten, everything is in one section, leaving no alphabetical list of references. It looks ok on that article, but I think they way we have it on the Music of Italy is fine, even though there is some redundancy (page numbers in both places in some case). I am b:User:Whiteknight from wikibooks, one of the current bureaucrats on that project. I would like to inform you that a recently accepted policy, Wikibooks:Wikibooks:Administrators affects you and several other administrators and bureaucrats that have been absent for over 1 year. According to the new policy, Administrators and bureaucrats who have been completely absent and inactive for over 1 year can be subjected to deadminship, pending a discussion on [b:WB:RFA]]. Your last edit on en.wikibooks occured June 2005, so you are currently eligible for de-adminship nomination.

Nobody on en.wikibooks considers this a punishment. However, it is the desire of the community that administrators (especially bureaucrats) be active and available. By removing perpetually inactive admins from the lists, it is hoped that we can better take stock of our human resources in the future. There are a few points that I would like to make to you:

1. If you do not intend on ever returning to en.wikibooks, I kindly ask that you voluntarily relinquish your permissions there, before the de-adminiship process is started.
2. If you do intend on returning in the future, I want to point out that you can re-nominate yourself for privledges, and be considered for them without prejudice. (and possibly even with some preference)
3. If you would like to return to wikibooks immediately, you can avoid this matter entirely.

Music of Italy

Nice job on adjusting the lead. I agree on leaving "musical notation" in (but I am not passionate about it). I think some of the comments are ok, but others are nitpicking. I took the liberty of deleting the phrase "and perception" after "Instrumental and vocal classical music is an iconic part of Italian identity..." It was unclear to me in the sense that I think I know what it means ("...as well as part of how Italians are perceived by others") but I can't come up with a less wordy way of saying it--- "...and perception..." by itself makes it sound as if maybe the Italians are doing the perceiving. Leaving it out completely wouldn't be that bad, either, I guess. Small point, but we don't want give the nitpickers a blank check. With a lot of information its difficult to keep track of what has been replied to and what hasn't, I'm sure you understand that. I've added more pictures form other cultures, but please keep in mind that I can only write about what scholars have published, and in the case of Eastern cultures, scholars were reluctant to discuss erotic depictions for a long time and the amount of material available for citing is vastly smaller than that for the Greeks and Romans. This reflects a bias of scholarship rather than any bias of mine. I'm not sure if I misunderstood this, but no album covers in the discography section? I'm so confused. I realize that not all pages follow the manual of style, but I haven't seen one discography page w/o an album cover.

Also, I really wanted to bring this article to FA and that was the purpose of the peer review, but do you think the articles are long enough? Dear TUF-KAT, you are the original person having added RGB values to color names in the article "List of Colors". I, and my colleages from the Munsell Color Science Laboratory are puzzled by this and before we attempt to remove all these values, we'd like to know where you got this information from. If what you did is simply convert the Hex values into RGB, then you were assuming that the colors listed were from the W3C standard. Color names and actual RGB values are two very distinct things. Originating with the X11 color names, this was acceptable as long as the color names only referred to values producible by NTSC-bound computer displays, but unfortunately, many of the names chosen then referred to classical color names relating to physical pigments, which cannot be imaged even on today's best computer screens, and for which, therefore, there cannot be unqualified RGB values. For these types of colors, we use photometric units and the CIE XYZ color space. Ppanzini 03:41, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Doing something about the ridiculous date autoformatting/linking mess

Dear TUF-KAT—you may be interested in putting your name to, or at least commenting on this new push to get the developers to create a parallel syntax that separates autoformatting and linking functions. IMV, it would go a long way towards fixing the untidy blueing of trivial chronological items, and would probably calm the nastiness between the anti- and pro-linking factions in the project. The proposal is to retain the existing function, to reduce the risk of objection from pro-linkers, and to keep the issue simple.

Music of Italy

Hello, again. Merry Chirstmas and Happy New Year. Thanks for keeping on eye on that article. I wonder if the sentence "The relatively recent history of Italy includes the development of an opera tradition that has spread throughout the world..." will cause some confusion. Maybe "nation state of Italy" is better. At least it will satisfy (maybe) the nitpickers who didn't understand the difference in the recent FA discussion. It also may imply that most Italian opera popular in the world was composed since 1860. Actually, that may be statistically pretty close to the truth since much Verdi and all Puccini fits in there, but it does exclude Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti. Maybe the word "further" might take care of that: "The relatively recent history of Italy as a nation state has furthered the development of a long cultural tradtion of opera that has spread throughout the world..." Salsa Music

Good work on refining Salsa Music and making it interesting enough for others to get involved. I am a newbie Salsero. I took some lessons in Nov & Dec 2005 and again in Nov & Dec 2006. I was curious why Jerry Rivera was omitted despite having the number 1 selling Salsa album of all-time. A DJ at one of the clubs I frequent is not a big fan of his and I gather he may sell well without being popular. I was curious why there was no mention of Bachata. Most Salsa clubs I go to play Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, and Cha-cha-cha. Bachata is in 4/4 like the others and has a Latin origin and flavor. Any comment. TonyTheTiger 04:10, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay. I'll look for those sources, but I suspect that the comments will be much the same; that is, it's not a missing source or a sentence or two--it's the fact that many of the people who commented are unwilling (or unable) to deal with "Italy" as modern nation instead of the centuries-old cultural museum from their history books. OK. I got one of them. The other--the one with the 700 concerts a year in Milan--I don't know where that came from. Someone may have seen a number on the internet. I think we can just delete the sentence, actually, but I can always come up with a note that says "extrapolated from staistics at such-and-such website." question about how RfC is done on article issues

Dear admin, please advise me how an RfC of article issues is conducted. I do not like them but I feel that the only way to have a civil discussion on this problem is to try to learn how to do RfC on the article Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Jajouka (and other articles that spell the village name, such as Master Musicians of Joujouka and Brian Jones, since two spellings are now being used instead of one). I don't do this thinking it's the best way to handle it because it is so confusing that it could easily be that incorrect things might end up decided, but this seems to be procedure. How do admins learn to go to talk in a particular RfC? Is an RfC a place for Admins to comment? Or who? I have felt this article involves hostile interest edit warring and COI and really don't want to be involved in drawn out debate. But maybe RfC's can provide solutions that remove contentiousness eventually. I truly hope so. I wish only admins were working on the articles related and not me or anyone else previously involved. But that's not practical, evidently. Admins can't do everything. I wish they could. Emerman 16:22, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

category for Music genres

Hi there! I have seen you made templates like Middle eastern music and South Asian music. Frankly I see no basis for such classifications. While music of Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan are almost the same and similar to Indian and Bangaladeshi music they are separated into different classes. I suggest Indo-Iranian music and Arab music templates similar to indo-iranian languages and Arabic language categories (if we need any at all). We have two cultural diaspora in the region: Indo-Iranian continent and the Arab world. When there is no similarity between music of Iran and north Africa I don't see why there need to be classified in one group. Such classifications (middle east, etc) are not cultural. They are more based on religion and politics (as you hear everyday in the news) and I would say it is Arab pov and western pov. The instruments used in persian music, kurdish music and azeri music are the same as indian music and Bangeladeshi music. Unfortunately the same problem exists with cinema. Yesterday I read an interview with an award winning film director of Tajikistan. He said in response to a question about the similarity between Iranian cinema and cinema of Tajikistan: "cinema of Tajikistan is a part of Iranian cinema and I am an Iranian director!". In wiki Iranian cinema and North african cinema and arab cinema are classified together separate from Tajikistan and central asia. Sangak 11:10, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
