The Tower of Babel (Bruegels) article edit

Hi, thanks for this, but there's already an article on this painting at The Tower of Babel (Bruegel). You might want to move your content over to the pre-existing article. Blythwood (talk) 23:55, 19 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of The Tower of Babel (Bruegels) edit

The article The Tower of Babel (Bruegels) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Duplicates pre-existing article The Tower of Babel (Bruegel), although this article has some good information in it. I've PRODded rather than CSD to make sure content can be moved across.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Blythwood (talk) 00:23, 20 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

out of process prod. i see you will make no effort to disambiguate, but will only delete. the fact that this article is not interwikilinked indicates its orphan status. when you cannot play nice with the other wikis you should expect duplication of effort. a split of old one into two articles is warranted. i may get around to this shortly. Sudowoodoo (talk) 18:56, 20 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand. We can't have two articles with (almost) the same title on the same painting. Why do you believe a split is warranted? Blythwood (talk) 02:09, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Evening; Red Tree edit

Hi Sudowoodoo, Thanks for your work on the Art Challenge. Please be careful to check that an article is still not available first before creating one. You can easily see this by checking the Wikidata item for the artwork. I merged your article and added your edit to my article, because mine was created earlier (under the correct name). Please note also that the names chosen are not arbitrary, but are the correct names as brought forth by the partner institutions. Jane (talk) 08:20, 26 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

oh hi, i would note the table has a lag, so i copied the name from wikidata. (the table links to the redirect) all the other wikipedias clip the title as well. i did not see a reference with the accepted english name. it reminds me of the mona lisa problem. is there a dutch article? Sudowoodoo (talk) 16:43, 26 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
I just noticed something that may have bearing on this... For two of the recent articles that you've translated for the Europeana Art History challenge, they were not linked in the Wikidata item, and therefore didn't appear in the various tracking tables of the project or have the 'in other languages' links in the sidebar. For example, see this edit I did to the Wikidata item for "Inger on the Beach" https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q18748731&type=revision&diff=325623844&oldid=325082002 or this edit I made to the Wikidata item for "Portrait of Louis XIV" https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q3399440&action=historysubmit&type=revision&diff=325623794&oldid=324918011 . So - once you've made your new translations, don't forget to go to the Wikidata item to link your new work to it - otherwise no other translators will know it exists.
And - thanks for your enthusiasm in this campaign! Wittylama 17:45, 26 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
oh hi fearless leader. i will go back and add the wikidata item. i note that there are some existing articles missing in the table, and there are variant names. you might want to double check the english names in the table. (cause bold folks like me might use your title)
apparantly my older creations are updated in wikidata, i suspect a bot lag - i.e. [1] & [2] because i did not do that manually. Sudowoodoo (talk) 17:51, 26 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sudowoodoo, thanks for your edits. I only wrote my first remark after being annoyed that someone reverted my edit, but I see that it was just a lag (albeit by 2 hours!). Anyways, if you want to claim the points for this Mondrian go ahead. I will remove mine. User:MDuvekot doesn't seem interested, though he/she added some nice references too. I'll be sending out a 'Challenge update' email soon (hopefully today if I'm organised enough) to the mailing list (which you can join if you'd like: https://lists.wikimedia.bg/mailman/listinfo/europeana-280-challenge ). I'll make sure to tell people to remember to add their new articles to the relevant Wikidata item, and to tell their wiki-friends about it too. This is not just for tallying the points of the competition but has the side-benefit of helping to spread the word among the wikiverse about how Wikipedians can integrate Wikidata into their workflows - which is going to become increasingly important over the years. Danse Macabre (Notke) edit

Hello! Do you think this page shoudl perhaps be called Danse Macabre (painting)?HappyValleyEditor (talk) 19:18, 1 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

no, the naming convention is by artist's last name; see also Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Visual_arts#Article_titles; but then there is a clique who openly flaunt it for painting, sculpture etc. the genre does not aid finding, but artist might. and there might be several paintings with the same title, but fewer by each artist. (except for artists who like untitled). Sudowoodoo (talk) 19:21, 1 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

After patrolling one of your articles I sort of got to friendly Wikipedia stalking your contributions as I can see there is some sort of art contribution challenge going on. I'm no use helping with translations I can help a little by doing some of the more gnomish touchups, hopefully letting you folks who can focus on the translation work more. I assume you are doing the translations, if not let me know and I'll change this to a more appropriate barnstar. Also hope you don't mind me following your edits just caught my interest, I love seeing art I wouldn't otherwise ever run across or know about. Phil (talk) 21:08, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

hello, thanks. yes, it is Wikidata:Wikidata:Europeana Art History Challenge month. 50 down, 150 to go. and there is also gap finder. check out the beta feature translation tools. increasingly, activity on wiki will be driven by off wiki organization and editathons. apparantly, some others do not share your enthusiasm. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Landscape (Painting by Zlatyu Boyadziev). Sudowoodoo (talk) 15:17, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Keep chugging away, I think it is great. Not surprising that there are some articles folks are choosing to debate, I try to strive to be inclusionist myself and focus on giving an article the best chance of passing muster if we can. I've toyed with the Translation tool (I tried to use it for that Andreas Pavias article) but it usually tells me it won't translate things to English for some reason, not sure why. In that case I just pasted each section into Google Translate which had no trouble with them (not perfect translation but a mostly passable one). I hope they figure out what is causing it not to work, not sure where to go to offer feedback about that or get help if it is just something I am having a problem with. If you are using the tool with success let me know if you have any pointers. Usually it just leaves most of the sections blank if I try to fill them in and only a few basic things like the categories come over. Phil (talk) 23:28, 4 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Another thought or two, not sure if somewhere in the Art Challenge project you could note and add to the list to copy artist pages when they don't exist for the work. I noted this with fi:Ilmari Aalto which has no English page leaving the artwork an orphan. There is a page on the Finnish wiki as you can see and if it were translated too it could be linked and prevent the page from being an orphan as well as helping a bit to establish notability. Also, having looked at that debate you noted, if anyone in that project could reach out to those who chose the notable works, it might be good to have them provide some sources that explain their signficance that could be included as references, they may be better positioned to provide that information to those who are doing the wiki work even if they don't Wikipedia themselves. Phil (talk) 00:02, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
there you go = Ilmari Aalto. yes, the ripple of the contest to fill gaps of european artists is good, but no points there. and, the europeana is political, being chosen by cultural officials. they may have chosen marginal notable works to highlight their collections or personal reasons. if the GLAM folks had made selections, then they would have chosen from the 10 examples in the source for Zlatyu Boyadziev. and some chose contemporary works by living artists which are problematic - we can "fair use" here on english, but the french are limited on the images they can show. it is a good demonstration of the adverse impact of the copyright lobby. it is notoriously difficult to find art sources, since most are off line or behind paywalls. it requires more expert input, such as the art + feminism editathons, can't do it in a month contest, it will take several years. Sudowoodoo (talk) 17:06, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Cool, and that is very understandable. That is why I lean towards keeping and gradually improving them. Keep up the great work and I'll make the contributions I can to helping as many as we can survive any moderation. Phil (talk) 13:31, 6 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution edit

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Franz Xaver Messerschmidt into The Simpleton (Messerschmidt). While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 21:53, 10 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

i'm kinda confused about all that. what is an edit summary or talk page? Sudowoodoo (talk) 18:07, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi, I was just stopping by to barnstar you for the sheer volume of art articles you're creating, and saw this. I also do copyright work, so to get this in first: When re-using material from a WP article in another WP article, all that's needed is to attribute the source of the text, that is: say where it came from so if anyone ever wants to see how that source text came to be, they can do so. One of the only 2 requirements of our free license. The easiest way, and the minimum that meets the license requirements, is to leave a somewhat formulaic edit summary for the edit that actually introduces the copied text. (The edit summary is the box right above the Save button, which you really should use for every edit, but certainly for copying content internally). Just make the edit summary say "Content copied from [[ARTICLE YOU USED]], see that page for attribution." Including the article name in brackets will give a handy wikilink to it for anyone so searching.
  • The more time consuming, but mor thorough, method is to place the template {{copied}} on the article's talk page (The "Talk" tab at the top of every page, including this one). That requires a bit more work but it is very complete in its coverage. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask! CrowCaw 22:03, 12 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages edit

Thank you for your recent articles, including Kladovo transport, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:59, 19 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

the nice thing about contests is that it concentrates the effort on the substance, and not the frills. the nice gnomes or a bot are adding talk page templates, but they can not create articles. nice division of effort. Sudowoodoo (talk) 16:55, 19 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Not exactly true. I create content, but I also do wikignome work. And each time I have to do wikignome work, it means I have less time to create content... --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:43, 23 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Mainie Jellett.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Mainie Jellett.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:Albert Wohlstetter.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Albert Wohlstetter.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Animalparty! (talk) 21:17, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
