Wikipedians in Oklahoma versus Oklahoma Wikipedians

Never alter transcluded data. You have altered many "User in Region" templates to set "cit=Wikipedians in Region". There is a difference between "Wikipedians in Oklahoma" and "Wikipedians from Oklahoma". "Wikipedians in Oklahoma" are folks who currently live in the State of Oklahoma. "Oklahoma Wikipedians" are folks who are either citizens or natives of Oklahoma. You are both of these, but a native of Oklahoma could be a current resident of Texas (God only knows why!) Category:Macedonian sportspeople stubs etc

Hi Spiderjerky

Earlier today you moved 3 categories:

• Category:Macedonian sportspeople stubs to Category:North Macedonian sportspeople stubs
• Category:Macedonian basketball biography stubs to Category:North Macedonian basketball biography stubs
• Category:Macedonian football biography stubs to Category:North Macedonian football biography stubs

... and you also modified the templates which populate them: ~17 templates in all.

This was a bad action in 3 ways:

1. WP:BOLD advises against BOLD moves in category namespace. As it says there, use WP:CFD to propose category moves.
2. The adjectival usages wrt North Macedonia are still being discussed at Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Macedonia)/2019_RFC#Adjective. Until that RFC closes, there is no consensus on whether they should be changed from the standards set out in WP:MOSMAC.
3. This whole area has been highly controversial for a long time, and is subject to discretionary sanctions authorized by active arbitration remedies (see WP:ARBMAC).

Adding those 3 points together, what you did was a really really really really really bad idea. I will set aside my personal frustration at spending 30 minutes of my life undoing this ... and (with difficulty) I will WP:AGF that you were somehow miraculously unaware of all of three points above. So for now I have just reverted your changes and will leave it at that.

But please be aware that some admin is likely to impose discretionary sanctions are likely if if you do any further such out-of-process actions. The renaming process wrt North Macedonia has been handled so far without drama, and it is v important for the continued cohesion of the editing community that disruptive actions do not trigger a resumption of the huge disputes which used to characterise this topic before Arbcom's decisions in 2007.

Empty categories

Hello, Spiderjerky,

Going through Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories, there are a lot of empty categories of the variety Category:Wikipedia type:city(67465) page with obscure subdivision and Category:Wikipedia type:city(190935) page with obscure subdivision. Apparently, you created these categories and marked them as Tracking categories.

Can you tell me what these categories are used for? I need to know if they will eventually be filled with pages/articles. And why you indicated that they were tracking categories, that would be useful. Thank you. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 01:56, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

@Liz: I honestly don't remember creating those categories, I create a lot of categories via Special:WantedCategories. I have no plans for them in the future, so if you want to delete them, I have no objections. Thanks for reaching out! spiderjerky (talk) 02:06, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

I also noticed that you just removed a deleted empty parent category from a category page & please know that you can always recreate a category that has been deleted for being an empty category should there now be a need for it. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. @Surtsicna: That might be a question better suited for User:Paulmcdonald, as they are the one who moved the category from lower-case to upper-case Presidents (I only moved the pages from Category:Wikipedia non-empty soft redirected categories). As that user is an admin and gave a good reason in their edit summary for the move on Category:Vice presidents of the United States, and the move to upper-case P is consistent with Wikipedia nomenclature (for example, Vice President of the United States), I thought it wouldn't be a problem to move the pages. @Surtsicna: So I looked into it a little further and it seems the overwhelming standard for titles in categories seems to be capitalizing all letters (for instance, the categories contained in Category:Vice presidents by country or Category:Prime Ministers by country). To match the standards of MOS:JOBTITLES it looks like mass changes in category names would be needed, which is above my pay grade (I'm just a gnome), so you may want to take it up with the original user, User:Paulmcdonald. spiderjerky (talk) 23:26, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
