Zalissia and Yasenivtsi

Hello! I am seeking detailed information on the history of the villages of Ясенівці and Залісся (Золочівський район, the Zolochiv district, Lviv oblast'). They may be in English, German, Polish, Ukrainian or Russian. Zalissia was called Zalesie in Polish. Yasenivtsi (also spelled Yasenovtsy, Jasenivci) was spelled Jasienowce, Jasieniowce and Jasionowce in Polish. The only information I've got come from Slownik Geograficzny Krolestwa Polskiego 1880-1902 and Księga Adresowa Polski(=Poland Business Directories) of the years 1891,1926-1930 - there are some population data and some surnames. I have placed these information at uk.wikipedia.org (Залісся, Ясенівці). So far, the largest source on them is there... I would be grateful if you could help me and provide me with some additional information on the history of these villages. These may be some Ukrainian encyclopedias/glossaries/guide-books entries. The Latin "Vita" occurs in various forms. "Vitalis" was a name used by Christians of the 1st century; from this come "Vital" (ויטל, Würzburg, 1298) and וידלא widlV (Bonn, 1288); and from this, "Vida" (Worms, 1349) and the later "Veitel". It occurs in Provence and Catalonia with the addition of a prefix, as "Anvidal". "Vida" also occurs as a feminine name, or, synonymously, as "Zoë/Zoe" (זוֹאֵי ,זווי Zunz, "G. S." ii. 61). Other forms of the same name are "Vives" (ויושׂ, ויבֿשׂ, Germany, 13th cent.; ויוישׂ, "Or Zarua'"), "Vivis", "Viva" (Majorca, 1391; "R. E. J." xiv. 261), "Vivo" (De Meaux = Jehiel of Paris, this form being often a translation of "Jehiel"). In the later Middle Ages the forms "Vivant" ("R. E. J." i. 69) and "Vivian" occur (Zunz, "G. S." ii. 35). As "caritatives" there are "Vivelin" (ויולין, Nuremberg, 1298) and "Vivelman" (ויבֿלמן, Bamberg, 1298). In Italy the old form "Vita" was used.

It is interesting to note that in Germany the name became "Hain" ("Hain" or "Heine Goldschmidt" = "Ḥayyim Hamelin"); and the family name of the poet (Heinrich Heine) is a derivative of this by way of "Heine-mann" (Freudenthal, in "Monatsschrift", xlv. 460). "Ḥayyim" was also one of the names given to those who had recovered from an illness (Zunz, "Namen des Juden", p. 51).

In modern (1900s) usage its secular parallel is "Henry". It also forms the basis of the surnames "Hyam", "Hyams, Hyamson", "Hiam, Hiams, Hiamson" and "Hayem".

Hi Sheynhertz: Greetings and Shalom, I hope you are well! Firstly, you must realize that any time there is a Wikipedia:Requests for comment that involves a Wikipedia editor/user then that person must respond soon, you do not have a choice really. I do not have to explain to you that by not responding on Wikipedia that that is then like being in "contempt of court" and it can lead to serious consequences for you. I am writing to you as a sincere friend: I am not writing against you at this time. But it is serious, and you must think very carefully and give your opinion at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Sheynhertz-Unbayg#Response. I have written the following in support of you because I know that you have done great work over the years, even though you have also caused some confusion and made some admins and editors angry. But now is your opportunity to help yourself. I have written this already at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Sheynhertz-Unbayg#Outside view and some others are supporting it, but we need you to help yourself.

For a number of years User:Sheynhertz-Unbayg has worked hard on Wikipedia in the very specialized areas pertaining to Onomastics in Judaism (see Onomastics: "...the study of proper names of all kinds and the origins of names...") and he has probably been the greatest contributor to many articles in Category:Jewish families. He is evidently a Japanese editor judging by his user page and edits and he has shown a remarkable interest in translating and understanding very difficult words and ideas from Yiddish and Hebrew into Japanese and English for the benefit of the Japanese and English Wikipedias -- no easy task for anyone. In the course of his work he does tend to create pages with a huge amount of links and often many of them will be "red links" to articles that don't exist yet. I have not seen fit to view these as major impediments to the subjects he is presenting and I have assumed that there will always be people who will approach knowledge about names in the way that he does. Lately he has been somewhat nervous, anxious, and defensive especially when some newer editors unfamiliar with him come across his work and this has caused him to over-react in sometimes alarming ways. I think that a serious underlying problem here is a cultural clash between the Japanese way of doing things and a more Western way and to complicate matters many of the articles that he deals with relate to the languages and names of Jewish people. Therefore, my recommendation is that people give him a heaping serving of Wikipedia:Assume good faith and back off and think of creative ways to help him overcome his fears. He is obviously getting emotional because he has devoted many years of work to articles that no-one else has done. As I recently told someone who was alarmed about his over-reactions: Let's contact some admins at the Japanese Wikipedia and get their help and input in dealing with User:Sheynhertz-Unbayg at this time. Czech Jews are jews who are either partly ethnically Czech or who spoke the Czech language and hence were part of the Czech community. German-speaking Bohemians, whom as it so happens were not uncommonly also Jewish, are Austrians. There's a big difference- you can read more here TALK:List of Czech Jews. Danke. The Saur DBE is a reputable source, but I wonder who published the Ärzte-Kodex then, which was written already in 1893[5]. Looks like there were two physicians by the name of Friedrich (Fritz) Schürer-Waldheim, I would guess father and son (it was common at the time to give the son the same name).
