IBCPirates edit

Hello again. Um, I have a question. I was thinking of adding a full song of He's a Pirate on Pirates of the Caribbean: Soundtrack Treasures Collection, and since I've seen full songs instead of just samples such as Fanfare and the Sintel Soundtrack, is it allowed? --IBCPirates (talk) 20:55, 16 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi @IBCPirates: That audio is allowed on articles like Fanfare because it is out of copyright. Its uploader specified that the file was to be released under creative commons and so it's fine to host on Wikipedia. A song from that PotC album would be in copyright and thus couldn't be uploaded, sorry. Sam Walton (talk) 07:58, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Samples are ok, right? --IBCPirates (talk) 16:23, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Probably not though I'm no expert. this and this are probably worthwile reads, and posting on this talk page with your question would also be a better idea than asking me. :) Sam Walton (talk) 16:53, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ok, but thanks for the links anyway. It makes things so much easier. ;-) --IBCPirates 19:46, 19 August 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by IBCPirates (talkcontribs)

Sleeping Dogs GAN edit

Hey man! Me, Czar and Tezero are gonna be taking Sleeping Dogs (video game) to GA today. I was wondering if you could maybe take a look at the images to see if they all comply with the guidelines, as well as being ready for GA and FA. Thanks for everything in advance, URDNEXT (talk) 13:04, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi URDNEXT. The cover photo source is a 404 (after you've done the age verification), you should find another source for it. I tidied up File:Sleeping Dogs gameplay.jpg and used a different NFC rationale that I prefer. In addition I made a small change to File:Sleeping Dogs Hong Kong Skyline by Day.jpg. I think the inclusion of a band photo is debatable but that's probably going to be up to the opinion of the GA reviewer. There is one more image in the gameplay section that I'd like to see, that being one which shows the UI. Something like this as an example, though without the website water mark and perhaps with some other UI elements on display. Hope this helps! Sam Walton (talk) 13:18, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much, man! If you can, take a look at the progress I made thanks to you. I fixed the sourcing problem for the cover, I'm gonna talk to the other editors about the band photo, and I'm currently uploading the UI image. URDNEXT (talk) 13:41, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
File:Leerooy Jenkinsss.jpg Here is the photo you requested about the UI. What do you think? @Samwalton9 URDNEXT (talk) 13:50, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm not confident that's the best image, due to the difficulty in telling what's going on in most of it, but the ammo/map is there which is nice. Might be best to ask on the SD talk page for other opinions. Sam Walton (talk) 13:56, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oh well, I'll try to find an alternative then. But thanks for the feedback! That way, we don't get blocked on the review. URDNEXT (talk) 17:03, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bloons TD edit edit

Hi, it was a long time ago, but in an edit to the Bloons TD page in January, you removed some important sections of the article. Obviously as you said, they were not well sourced. However, I'm not sure where good sources could be found. Do you have any idea what sort of sources to look for? |Randomno| WP 23:51, 24 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

There were also many other edits made, a lot of which I think did have proper sourcing. I probably know less than you do about good sourcing though. |Randomno| WP 23:55, 24 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Randomno. Well we made sure to stick to third party reliable sources, most of which I believe were found via the Reliable Sources for Video Games custom google search (that was my primary searching tool anyway), or just via usual google searches. I'm relatively confident that up to when we made our expansion I had used all the sources available through those searches, but I could be wrong. I'd imagine that any other sources would likely have to be found from books or magazines. WP:VG/RS may help you find more sources, and identify which can be used. Sam Walton (talk) 09:43, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Alright, thanks for the info. Doesn't the site of the games' creator count as a reliable source? |Randomno| WP 18:45, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Only for uncontroversial facts to back up third party sources. Have a read of the policy section of WP:PRIMARY :) Sam Walton (talk) 21:09, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter edit

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1.   Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2.   Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3.   Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4.   Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6.   12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7.   Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8.   Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists.   Matty.007 (submissions),   ThaddeusB (submissions),   WikiRedactor (submissions),   Figureskatingfan (submissions),   Yellow Evan (submissions),   Prism (submissions) and   Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Edit on IC 1101 (September 7, 2014) edit

I saw your reason on your edit on IC 1101. Some may seem to be original research. But the article would lose its color without those. These are the reasons why I typed the "Wrong information?":

  • To correct some data on the Internet– When you typed IC 1101 on Google, it states it's in Serpens Cauda, despite the fact that it was really on Virgo, as you can see on the map. Plus, if you watched the episode of How the Universe Works you can see that it was mistaken as IC 1011. I put it there to finally put an end on those.
  • To state its size– Well, the "Size" subsection is not original research, as you can see ref. 5 there. Furthermore, IC 1101 is widely known due to its size, which is really an error. For further info, ask my friend Parejkoj since he knows a lot.

You may change it in a more proper way if you want. But do not remove those info since it is the main reason why this galaxy is notable. SkyFlubbler (talk) 09:50, 7 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi SkyFlubbler. Wikipedia is not here to Right Great Wrongs - this includes correcting false information. If you want to educate people on the truth, just have the correct information in the article, no need to say "some people thought X but actually Y". If these instances of misinformation are really important, sources would cover them in their entirety (i.e. there would be a source which says 'this information was false in this TV programme/website/whatever, but actually here's the true information!'). If such sources exist feel free to use them to back up the paragraphs, but currently they are just original research, and thus I'm removing them again. Do not re-add the information without citing sources which state the information you're adding. Sam Walton (talk) 11:46, 7 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
SkyFlubbler: Sam is absolutely correct here. You must provide reliable citations to back up your claims, either stating that while historically it was considered this but is actually this, or stating that this source says this but that source says that. Regardless, whatever you add needs to be back by reliable sources or it shouldn't be included. Huntster (t @ c) 18:25, 7 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Apparently I was mentioned? We definitely want to say something about the size inconsistency. There are a jillion pages on the web that mention IC 1101 as the "largest known galaxy" and many of them cite Wikipedia (if they cite anything)! We've basically got a case of citogenesis here, and something needs to be said about it. Old versions of the article made the claim explicitly, based off of an editor misreading a paper, I think (I haven't tracked down who/when). Seeing as Wikipedia created the wrong in the first place, we should both mention it, and correct it.
I don't have a strong opinion about the Name and Constellation sections, except that if they were to stay they'd need some sources. - Parejkoj (talk) 03:00, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
This section needs to be removed. As I said to you on your own talk page, you must reference your additions. I notice you have not been doing this with multiple significant additions to articles. You correct misconceptions by presenting the correct information, and letting readers read the information. Wikipedia isn't an op-ed column in a science magazine. -- 65.94.169.222 (talk) 04:53, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sock Pupperty edit

Hello, and I'm User:CaptainElizabethSwann. If you please, Annika did pass away this month, but I won't give you details because that has been claimed as privacy for her family. Lordstarscream*Elizabethswan, we decided, was better left of being told that she passed away in July, due to the fact that he has always been harassing her IRL and on other websites, so that's what I told him. This is not IBCPirates that was me, as one of her distant friends, trying to get her account back from somebody who thought it was a great idea to trash her account. Now that you know the entire story, please delete that absurd claim, and let us go on with our lives. --CaptainElizabethSwann (talk) 21:48, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
