AIDS

Sam, I appreciate your interest. You came in at the end of a brutal edit war. A group of scientists had contributed to the HIV/AIDS articles and their contribtions were brutally revert by some engineers! This resulted in many people merging the versions. I was just tidying up some nonsense like "Current science generally holds that" which actually referred to a UNAIDS report! and "in illicit drug injection; accidental needle sticks" which was a POV spin on medical transmision of HIV. Many of these changes just restored the text to the cited source.

We have endless problems with these articles: reference stripping is rife, which removes the links to the sources, source are changed, and text is given a POV spin not in the source!

One group of reverts remove all refernces to CDC the other object to WHO! The we have the group advocating circumcison to prevent AIDS and others claiming it is a disease restricted to gay men. Sci guy 15:28, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Blocking

I forget what the IPs were, but two that I blocked were only 24 hours since the user obviously had a dynamic IP. The other one I blocked for longer because he also vandalized my user page (and vandalized other articles in the past). The one registered user (User:Pigger) is a member of the GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America, not "Global Network of Arab Activists") and has been vandalizing articles and making personal attacks for quite a while. I have no doubt that he'll simply register another username. He also sent me a rather threatening email saying what he'd do if anyone unblocked him. I had just assumed you were an admin and would unblock the users if you felt like it. I deleted the emails (I got a few of them from the various blocked users) after reading them because they weren't much more coherent than your average junkmail spam. Spelling of word knowledgable

Whether it's a bot or not, you might want to be more selective... your edit summary for this edit said "grammar (it's / its)" -- implying that you fixed a case where "it's" was used when "its" should have been, or vice versa. Thanks for correcting the very very very bad mistakes in the very very very many pages on Tea. I guess there was one mistake, available, and I guess that was because it came from the same template. Godmode script

What exactly does your godmode script do, and how do I go about using it? • I've tried "installing" the "light" version for non-administrators (godmode-light.js), and it didn't seem to work for me either. However, another user (Drini) seemed to have no problem with it. • Hi Sam, I've been using your godmode script and it's beautiful— it has really taken out about 75% of the work in rc patrol, meaning one can do so much more in a given period of time. Much thanks for this little gem! But I have noticed a problem: it adds the ampersand (&) code in some reverts.[2], [3], [4]. It adds it when the text contains "&". (Incidentally I've noticed the same problem in blogging software, such as when one adds url's to the NYT or WaPo).This is a bit annoying because one then has to go back and manually correct the problem. • Hello Sam. Thanks for trying to help me with this. I use Firefox—I recently switched to F 1.5 Beta 1 (Deer Park). I believe it happens with the standard release F 1.0.6 as well. After your message, I tested the tool on a piece of vandalism—with disastrous results. I guess for some reason godmode is unsafe (for me) to use. I'll test using it with F 1.0.7 and IE, but don't have much hope it will work. Incidentally, if you google "ampersand bug" or "amp & bug", you'll find quite a few hits: most seem to concern blogging software like Wordpress etc. There's apparently been an ampersand bug on Wiki as well that was fixed, but it's an old issue that I can't currently find reference to. Firstly just to say thanks, this is an ace tool that I have been using for ages. However recently it has been making a few problematic reverts for me exchanging certain characters e.g. [5], [6], [7]. Can I have a hand?

Hi Sam Hocevar! I am sort of in a bind here. I hope I don't get banned for coming to you with a random problem. I know your a very person. I (and other people) am trying to work on an article for another MediaWiki called Encyclopædia_damatica. The problem is Admins from the ED wiki keep coming and stirring up all this POV/legal mumbo jumbo and are preventing the article from getting any real neutral work done on it. Personally, I don't know if I can be labeled neutral anymore, these guys are trouble and it's driving me crazy. If you look at the Talk Page you would probably notice that a majority of this debate and fuss is by the ED admins (despite a few rogue users coming in and helping out, but they quickly grow tired and leave). They are experienced with wikis, and VERY persistant because of their dedication to this website. Do you think you can help out on this article? Hello Mr. Hocevar. I am one of the "Ed Admins" that Depakote mentions, though the argument isn't as one-sided as he is trying to make it out to be. Mr. Depakote continues to ignore basic facts that everyone else is trying to make to him. Yes, some of these people are ED Admins and users (I fall into the second category, a simple search of the Encyclopædia damatica Admin list will prove that), but we are trying to make the article as NPOV as possible, but Mr. Depakote continues to fight for certain things (including a picture of one of the founders) that he has no consensus on. Also, in regards to the image thing, the person whose images he wants to put on wikipedia has been specifically denied permission to wikipedia, due to Mr. Depakote putting the images up in the first place, and fighting over it. I would personally like to invite you to come over to the Encyclopædia damatica article and look thru the history, and also look thru the Talk:Encyclopædia damatica page. You may also want to see Mr. Depakote User talk page. He has attempted to contact another wiki Admin and didn't get the results he wanted, as you can also see by Depakote's talk page. Hey, Sam. One thing that Depakote wants to do is to include personal photos of Sherrod DiGreppo, taken from Sherrod's personal site. If you check archive.org's cache of how the site was 2-3 years ago, there's a note saying that it's okay to use the photos as long as you leave a link back to Sherrod's personal site. This has long since been replaced on the actual site by a message saying that Sherrod retains all copyright over all the photos and does not grant anyone authorization to use them on any other site in any way whatsoever. I have already ruled that the article doesn't actually need a photo of Sherrod, and even if it did we couldn't use any of those. DS 02:45, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't think "Gang-Rape" is a term I would use here Mr Hocevar. An analogy would be is that Mr. Depakote is like Fox News, trying to spin their version of events as "fair and balanced" and forget ethical and moral considerations. The article was on its way to being short, sweet, and Neutral POV, until Mr. Depakote came around and decided that alot of unneccesary things should be included that he has no consensus on. Cool, I'm immune to godmode-light.js! :-)

I just tried out your godmode-light.js script and found that I was unable to revert my own edits. It looks like all users with spaces in their usernames are similarly immune, as the script tries to compare "Ilmari_Karonen" with "Ilmari Karonen" and, finding them different, aborts with Error: Ilmari_Karonen is not the last editor!. I suppose that makes little difference in practice, since I can still revert edits by anons just fine, but it would still be nice to see this fixed. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 16:26, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Update: I made a copy of your script and fixed both this bug and the ampersand bug mentioned above (which is actually pretty serious, since it can corrupt any page containing HTML entities). godmode-light bug

It appears that the rollback function of your godmode-light script has a slight bug—namely, it replaces greater than and less than signs with the ASCII code for greater than and less than. This has the function of making comments and tags visible within the text of an article. I have had similar problems after upgrading to Firefox 1.6 (DeerPark alpha 2) from FF1.07. Rollback used to work beautifully in 1.07, but now I am afraid, very afraid to use it (see this). I seem to have fixed the problem, for me at least. I think it was an incompatibility with Lupin's popups tool. I have combined a small tweak to the AddRevertButtons() function from here which I have been using since starting with popups, and combined this with Sam's current godmode-light.js. Everything is now working as normal in FF1.6 Deerpark 2 :)

Please check out User:Cactus.man/scripts/localgodmode.js if you want to test it out. Add it to your monobook.js in the usual way:

rollback.js and > <

Hello,

I'm having troubles with rollback.js, it seems to be converting < > (as seen in HTML comments on some pages) to their ampersand forms (& gt; and & lt;), which completely messes up articles [8] that use html markup. I'm using firefox 1.5 to browse WP. Any suggestions?

godmode-light.js won't work

When I tried to revert some pages today, it suddenly wouldn't work anymore. And it has worked for me in the past couple of weeks. My javascript is a bit rusty but the script seems to be tripping over because it can't find pagehistory from XML. Like Sceptre said, most likely to be because of "Note: exporting the full history of pages has been disabled until further notice due to performance reasons, in the meantime you can get the full page history of pages from the database dumps — Wikimedia server administrators." --PTSE 15:48, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

godmode-light crashing my browser

I'm using the latest version of Safari on an iBook G4. I just tried it out in Firefox and get "Failed to parse XML data returned by the server. Hint: try to disable both "Enable section editing by right-clicking on section titles (JavaScript)" and "Edit pages on double click (JavaScript)" in your editing preferences until a proper fix is found," which is better than crashing the browser. So something's screwed up....

In the past few days, every once in a while, Wikipedia has been super slow to load pages for me. Upwards of a minute, on a cable connection. Every time it did it, it was connecting to some website in the status bar, this "sam.zoy.org." After 2 full virus scans and 2 spyware scans, it was still doing it. Then I found it, in my monobook.js:

All pages unparsable

Well, at least for me. Everytime I try to use godmode-light, I get "Getting article history (/w/index.php?title=Sam_Allardyce&action=history&limit=50)... Failed to parse XML data returned by the server. I already answered on IRC, but just for the record: I restored them because Timecop asked for their source (wiki format), and there is no way to retrieve that without undeleting first. problem with godmode-light and user contributions

Hi! Thanks for your great script, godmode-light. I'm having an odd problem with it which just started a few days ago - namely, in Special:Contributions, rollback links don't seem to work. To take an example from my own contributions page:

AIDS

Sam, I appreciate your interest. You came in at the end of a brutal edit war. A group of scientists had contributed to the HIV/AIDS articles and their contribtions were brutally revert by some engineers! This resulted in many people merging the versions. I was just tidying up some nonsense like "Current science generally holds that" which actually referred to a UNAIDS report! and "in illicit drug injection; accidental needle sticks" which was a POV spin on medical transmision of HIV. Many of these changes just restored the text to the cited source.

We have endless problems with these articles: reference stripping is rife, which removes the links to the sources, source are changed, and text is given a POV spin not in the source!

One group of reverts remove all refernces to CDC the other object to WHO! The we have the group advocating circumcison to prevent AIDS and others claiming it is a disease restricted to gay men. Sci guy 15:28, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Blocking

I forget what the IPs were, but two that I blocked were only 24 hours since the user obviously had a dynamic IP. The other one I blocked for longer because he also vandalized my user page (and vandalized other articles in the past). The one registered user (User:Pigger) is a member of the GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America, not "Global Network of Arab Activists") and has been vandalizing articles and making personal attacks for quite a while. I have no doubt that he'll simply register another username. He also sent me a rather threatening email saying what he'd do if anyone unblocked him. I had just assumed you were an admin and would unblock the users if you felt like it. I deleted the emails (I got a few of them from the various blocked users) after reading them because they weren't much more coherent than your average junkmail spam. Whether it's a bot or not, you might want to be more selective... your edit summary for this edit said "grammar (it's / its)" -- implying that you fixed a case where "it's" was used when "its" should have been, or vice versa. Godmode script

What exactly does your godmode script do, and how do I go about using it? • I've tried "installing" the "light" version for non-administrators (godmode-light.js), and it didn't seem to work for me either. However, another user (Drini) seemed to have no problem with it. • Hi Sam, I've been using your godmode script and it's beautiful— it has really taken out about 75% of the work in rc patrol, meaning one can do so much more in a given period of time. Much thanks for this little gem! But I have noticed a problem: it adds the ampersand (&) code in some reverts.[10], [11], [12]. It adds it when the text contains "&". (Incidentally I've noticed the same problem in blogging software, such as when one adds url's to the NYT or WaPo).This is a bit annoying because one then has to go back and manually correct the problem. • Hello Sam. Thanks for trying to help me with this. I use Firefox—I recently switched to F 1.5 Beta 1 (Deer Park). I believe it happens with the standard release F 1.0.6 as well. After your message, I tested the tool on a piece of vandalism—with disastrous results. I guess for some reason godmode is unsafe (for me) to use. I'll test using it with F 1.0.7 and IE, but don't have much hope it will work. Incidentally, if you google "ampersand bug" or "amp & bug", you'll find quite a few hits: most seem to concern blogging software like Wordpress etc. There's apparently been an ampersand bug on Wiki as well that was fixed, but it's an old issue that I can't currently find reference to. Firstly just to say thanks, this is an ace tool that I have been using for ages. Can I have a hand?

Hi Sam Hocevar! I am sort of in a bind here. I hope I don't get banned for coming to you with a random problem. I know your a very person. I (and other people) am trying to work on an article for another MediaWiki called Encyclopædia_damatica. The problem is Admins from the ED wiki keep coming and stirring up all this POV/legal mumbo jumbo and are preventing the article from getting any real neutral work done on it. Personally, I don't know if I can be labeled neutral anymore, these guys are trouble and it's driving me crazy. If you look at the Talk Page you would probably notice that a majority of this debate and fuss is by the ED admins (despite a few rogue users coming in and helping out, but they quickly grow tired and leave). They are experienced with wikis, and VERY persistant because of their dedication to this website. Do you think you can help out on this article? Hello Mr. Hocevar. I am one of the "Ed Admins" that Depakote mentions, though the argument isn't as one-sided as he is trying to make it out to be. Mr. Depakote continues to ignore basic facts that everyone else is trying to make to him. Yes, some of these people are ED Admins and users (I fall into the second category, a simple search of the Encyclopædia damatica Admin list will prove that), but we are trying to make the article as NPOV as possible, but Mr. Depakote continues to fight for certain things (including a picture of one of the founders) that he has no consensus on. Also, in regards to the image thing, the person whose images he wants to put on wikipedia has been specifically denied permission to wikipedia, due to Mr. Depakote putting the images up in the first place, and fighting over it. I would personally like to invite you to come over to the Encyclopædia damatica article and look thru the history, and also look thru the Talk:Encyclopædia damatica page. You may also want to see Mr. Depakote User talk page. He has attempted to contact another wiki Admin and didn't get the results he wanted, as you can also see by Depakote's talk page. Hey, Sam. One thing that Depakote wants to do is to include personal photos of Sherrod DiGreppo, taken from Sherrod's personal site. If you check archive.org's cache of how the site was 2-3 years ago, there's a note saying that it's okay to use the photos as long as you leave a link back to Sherrod's personal site. This has long since been replaced on the actual site by a message saying that Sherrod retains all copyright over all the photos and does not grant anyone authorization to use them on any other site in any way whatsoever. I have already ruled that the article doesn't actually need a photo of Sherrod, and even if it did we couldn't use any of those. DS 02:45, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

It's about an article staying fair and balanced. it's about the same group of people (who are all diehead ED people, or friends of them) controlling the page. It must have taken a week to secure Sherrod DeGrippo's name alone on the site due to this (because of "privacy"). Anyway, I'm saying the team who's up to bat at this article right now isn't very even. I don't think "Gang-Rape" is a term I would use here Mr Hocevar. An analogy would be is that Mr. Depakote is like Fox News, trying to spin their version of events as "fair and balanced" and forget ethical and moral considerations. The article was on its way to being short, sweet, and Neutral POV, until Mr. Depakote came around and decided that alot of unneccesary things should be included that he has no consensus on. Plus, he has now been told by two other Admins (DS and Hermione1980) to back off because he has no consensus. I would hate to see you dragged into this as well. Cool, I'm immune to godmode-light.js! :-)

I just tried out your godmode-light.js script and found that I was unable to revert my own edits. It looks like all users with spaces in their usernames are similarly immune, as the script tries to compare "Ilmari_Karonen" with "Ilmari Karonen" and, finding them different, aborts with Error: Ilmari_Karonen is not the last editor!. I suppose that makes little difference in practice, since I can still revert edits by anons just fine, but it would still be nice to see this fixed. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 16:26, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Update: I made a copy of your script and fixed both this bug and the ampersand bug mentioned above (which is actually pretty serious, since it can corrupt any page containing HTML entities). I use IE, and I understand this is mainly geared towards FF. I do see the rollback button, but sadly cant use it. I get redirected to a page which reads "Please wait, reverting edits " and "Getting article history..." , but then stops. IE gives the following error: Line: 227 Char: 3 Error: Object doesnt support this property or method Code: 0

godmode-light bug

It appears that the rollback function of your godmode-light script has a slight bug—namely, it replaces greater than and less than signs with the ASCII code for greater than and less than. This has the function of making comments and tags visible within the text of an article. As an extra note, although it is great, the same happens with –, so rather than being &ndash; it ends up looking like &amp;ndash; resulting in the codes being visable on the pages. If you know of any solution to this bug please drop me a note, thanks! Ian13 20:04, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

I have had similar problems after upgrading to Firefox 1.6 (DeerPark alpha 2) from FF1.07. Rollback used to work beautifully in 1.07, but now I am afraid, very afraid to use it (see this). I seem to have fixed the problem, for me at least. I think it was an incompatibility with Lupin's popups tool. I have combined a small tweak to the AddRevertButtons() function from here which I have been using since starting with popups, and combined this with Sam's current godmode-light.js. Everything is now working as normal in FF1.6 Deerpark 2 :)

Please check out User:Cactus.man/scripts/localgodmode.js if you want to test it out. Add it to your monobook.js in the usual way:

Spelling incident

rollback.js and > <

Hello,

I'm having troubles with rollback.js, it seems to be converting < > (as seen in HTML comments on some pages) to their ampersand forms (& gt; and & lt;), which completely messes up articles [16] that use html markup. I'm using firefox 1.5 to browse WP. Any suggestions?

godmode-light.js won't work

When I tried to revert some pages today, it suddenly wouldn't work anymore. And it has worked for me in the past couple of weeks. My javascript is a bit rusty but the script seems to be tripping over because it can't find pagehistory from XML. Like Sceptre said, most likely to be because of "Note: exporting the full history of pages has been disabled until further notice due to performance reasons, in the meantime you can get the full page history of pages from the database dumps — Wikimedia server administrators." --PTSE 15:48, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

godmode-light crashing my browser

I'm using the latest version of Safari on an iBook G4. I just tried it out in Firefox and get "Failed to parse XML data returned by the server. Hint: try to disable both "Enable section editing by right-clicking on section titles (JavaScript)" and "Edit pages on double click (JavaScript)" in your editing preferences until a proper fix is found," which is better than crashing the browser. So something's screwed up....

In the past few days, every once in a while, Wikipedia has been super slow to load pages for me. Upwards of a minute, on a cable connection. Every time it did it, it was connecting to some website in the status bar, this "sam.zoy.org." After 2 full virus scans and 2 spyware scans, it was still doing it. Then I found it, in my monobook.js:

So I'd guess that someone came up with the above line of code, so that they never have to update their monobook when you update the godmode script, hmm? All pages unparsable

Well, at least for me. Everytime I try to use godmode-light, I get "Getting article history (/w/index.php?title=Sam_Allardyce&action=history&limit=50)... Failed to parse XML data returned by the server. Hint: try to disable both "Enable section editing by right-clicking on section titles (JavaScript)" and "Edit pages on double click (JavaScript)" in your editing preferences until a proper fix is found." Of course, I have disabled those two JS functions, but to no avail. And I am using the latest version of the script. So what goes wrong? Could it be my browser? I am using Firefox 1.5. Thanks! Hi Sam, could you tell me why you restored the following pages?

I already answered on IRC, but just for the record: I restored them because Timecop asked for their source (wiki format), and there is no way to retrieve that without undeleting first. Had there been a text entry to give a reason for undeletion I would have mentioned that. I do not plan to take part in any flamewar regarding userboxes. Have fun. problem with godmode-light and user contributions

Hi! Thanks for your great script, godmode-light. I'm having an odd problem with it which just started a few days ago - namely, in Special:Contributions, rollback links don't seem to work. To take an example from my own contributions page:

Yeah, it died on my Special:Contributions page yesterday. Sill works on diffs. Perhaps it co-incides with the introduction of the block log addition to the Username (Talk | Block log) at the top of the page? I get:
