DYK nom query

Hello Rlevse. I wonder if you would care to comment on my DYK nomination, and whether the hook is appropriate or not, and if the article can be accepted if a different hook is used. There's also another thread here. Christopher Connor (talk) 02:44, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Template:Did you know/Preparation area 2

Hi, I really appreciate your recent hard work at DYK. I was looking at Template:Did you know/Preparation area 2 you assembled, and found the article Sampi really well-written, interesting and unique, and I was wondering if you would mind if I replace the current lead hook with it. We've used archaic letters and symbols as lead images before, with usually good reponse (meaning high number of hits), and sometimes unorthodox choice of lead hook is good, in my opinion, for variety and fun. What would you say? --BorgQueen (talk) 08:14, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for asking. I noticed the quirkiness and quality and almost made it the "quirky" hook at the bottom. This request is quite reasonable and makes sense. But since I really like that bird pic, I just made sampi the lead hook with pic in prep 3. I presume that's acceptable? Thanks for noticing all the time I spend there.RlevseTalk 11:56, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
Sure, thanks! --BorgQueen (talk) 12:30, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

BorgQueen and Rlevse, thank you both for your work with DYK. It is a great service to our reader and contributors. Without the help of users such as yourself this popular feature would not be possible. FloNight♥♥♥♥ 15:17, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Just because you put the word "concede" in there doesn't mean you conceded, DS. Since you are a checkuser, could you do a CU on 69.3.72.249 and User:Una Smith? - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:19, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Am I a bad admin?

Obviously I don't think I am, and none of my fellow admins have raised any concerns over my actions. However, MickMacNee has proposed an interaction ban on myself at WP:ANI, and is further trying to prevent my discussing any problems about his editing with other editors.

Basically, he is trying to distract attention from his behaviour at AfD and elsewhere, including personal attacks on other editors by calling them "basic trolls". He is also rubbishing the result of the RFC he filed about me, probably because it did not produce the result he wanted. I'd really appreciate some advice as to what to do on this one. Mjroots (talk) 19:01, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm not familiar with this dispute at all but at a quick glance it seems there's more problematic behavior with Mick than you. RlevseTalk 22:10, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Perhaps that's because Mjroots is an administrator and his target isn't. Doesn't make either you or him bad administrators, just typical administrators. Malleus Fatuorum 22:56, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

hook choice

Your hook choice seemed odd to me since it was such a long hook and the one mentioning Bradley would probably get a lot more hits.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 21:41, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Rlevse

DYK Prep1

I was distracted before I was able to enter a final hook for DYK prep 1. Can you verify that I made the moves correctly? Alansohn (talk) 19:50, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Looks good. Nice wide variety of topics, spread out (you don't want two football articles beside each other for example). Only thing I noticed was you didn't remove the example DYKmakes. I paste over them with the ones I'm using so I don't have to worry so much about that detail. RlevseTalk 19:59, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I look forward to seeing the front page feature my selections and I'll make sure to take care of the DYKmakes. As long as I'm here, I know that I can't move any of my own nominations to the queue, but can I ask if there are any issues with my selecting articles for prep that I had tick-marked, in terms of avoiding conflict. Alansohn (talk) 00:56, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
There needs to be a break in the chain for sure, one shouldn't nom an article, then approve it, and also move it to a prep set. Nor should you approve your own noms. IMHO if you're not the nom, you can approve and move to prep, I've done this often and there's been discussion on it and no objection at all. RlevseTalk 01:03, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Awesome Wikipedian / Happy Me Day!

Hi Rlevse... I've been looking at wikipedia ribbons lately, and noticed there appears to be no ribbon to go with the "Awesome Wikipedian" userbox for use by those you have recognised for their contributions. So, I developed one, which I offer for your consideration. I based it on the FA star you included in the userbox, surrounded by a green circle (the colour your username uses) and stylised peace symbols (inspired by User:Rlevse/Today/Archive). The full-size ribbon is at File:Awesome Wikipedian Ribbon.PNG.

Awesome Wikipedian

If you like it, you might like to create a template page for it and offer recipients the choice of a userbox or ribbon or both (or neither). Regards, EdChem (talk) 04:24, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Wow, that's really cool, thanks! RlevseTalk 11:38, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
I've added a notice to the template that appears on their talk page, giving them the option of this or a userbox. RlevseTalk 12:00, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Cool, I'm glad you like it. I did do a version without the peace signs, I wasn't sure which was better. I can upload it if you want to have a look. EdChem (talk) 12:07, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Anatomy of an Epidemic

Hello, Rlevse. Thank you again for selecting Anatomy of an Epidemic. I am afraid that the chart and text didn't match and so I redid the chart and reworded the hook to:

... that in Anatomy of an Epidemic, Robert Whitaker asks why the number of Americans disabled by mental illness nearly doubled since 1987 (chart pictured)?

I hope that's acceptable. If not it's fine to remove this one. -SusanLesch (talk) 09:38, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

I don't understand

Could you help me understand how this comment relates to my request? Do you see my request as disruptive? Or are you simply commenting on comments by other editors there and not the amendment request itself? Thank you, --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 16:47, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Let's see, there's an endless parade of arbcases, amendment requests, and other forms of dispute resolution coming from the EE editors. That group simply seems incapable of getting along. The community has spent massive amounts of time trying to solve the situation and nothing gets through to a huge portion of the EE editors. Are we, the community, to endure this forever? No. It's time for the EE editors to get along and edit productively once and for all or face the consequences. Ditto for all the other never ending ethnic wars on wiki.RlevseTalk 16:57, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
I agree with your assessment of the situation, which doesn't change my previous question: what does this have to do with my person and my amendment request? I stayed away from any controversies (that includes staying away from commenting on other editors in DR fora) for the last year, roughly (since the case started). PS. Warning, banning and blocking editors indeed doesn't seem to be successful. Of course, one may point to the saying "if brute force doesn't work, you have simply not used enough". Alas, I still think that there is another solution rather than more brute (nuking) force - I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 21:55, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Being nice to ethnic warriors, trolls, etc works even less. I'm commenting on the whole EE/wiki ethnic war mess, not you specifically. I think we should reopen EE and settle everything once and for all, at least a long time. We have a constant barrage of claims along the line of "i'm not so bad, please unban me", "I'm truly reformed", "i didn't mean it", etc ad nauseum. The sniping and bickering in the ethnic wars is unending and EE is one of the primo areas. The rest of wikipedia has better things to do like BUILD AN ENCYCLOPEDIA instead constantly having to settle disputes between people who want to act like kids squabbling over a line in a sandbox and refuse to grow up and edit productively. They all need to stop the bickering, personal attacks, insults, etc, ie, behave or be gone.RlevseTalk 22:06, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Again, I cannot disagree with you on the big picture, although I'd prefer to see some carrot-solution tried before unleashing even more "nuking" power on the area. Further, tt is unfortunate that conflict in EE area continues, but please note it does so without my slightest involvement. I understand how comments by other editors and various conflicts and issues they bring contribute to the Committee and community's annoyance with the subject area, but I don't see how those incidents, unrelated to my person, should reflect negatively on me or my amendment (and your amendment comment, so far, does not make it clear who it is addressed to). If, as you say above, it is a comment to editors in general, and not to me nor on the amendment in particular, could I ask you to clarify that there? PS. In fact, you talk of "BUILDING AN ENCYCLOPEDIA" - this is exactly what I am asking for you to let me do, nothing less, nothing more :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 22:28, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Carrots have been tried, they didn't work, those editors had their chance, multiple times in many cases. Time for TR's Big Stick.RlevseTalk 22:32, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
I agree as far as multiple warnings. But carrots... when were carrots tried? I can't recall it; if you could point me out to a carrot example, I'd appreciate it (perhaps our definition of a carrot differs; mind you, as Radeksz pointed out, conceptualizing a wiki carrot in DR is much tougher than conceptualizing a stick). When I think of carrots, I think of positive reinforcement (saying nice things) about editors, from general things like barnstars and comments of appreciation to a formal statements by wiki-bodies like the Committee that "editor X has reformed and his conduct has been uncontroversial and exemplary for the past year" and such. PS. I thought that the Big Stick was used last year already... --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 22:36, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
The bunch of carrots are generally eaten long before a case gets to arbcom. Plus these guys have already had their chance at arbcom and have blown it bigtime. Last year was not a big stick.RlevseTalk 22:44, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

DYK question regarding the hook

Hi Rlevse. I was wondering if the new article, In Defense of Reason, would qualify for a DYK. I am having trouble finding a hook, though. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 20:43, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it qualifies. Refs come after punctuation, not before. Please fix. There are lots of hooks in there: his 3 volumes, his brutal tactics, his considering moderns the descendants of Romantics, etc. Ensure you have a ref after the hook in the article.RlevseTalk 21:54, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Your input is requested

I have started an RfC on inappropriate userboxes, i.e. those that don't follow the introductory paragraph at WP:UBX:

"A userbox (commonly abbreviated as UBX) is a small colored box ... designed to appear only on a Wikipedian's user page as a communicative notice about the user, in order to directly (or even indirectly) help Wikipedians collaborate more effectively on articles."

How does a userbox about a user's own preferences in regards to what topics on Wikipedia they hate and what type of sexually explicit material they like and actively view help Wikipedians collaborate with one another? Which is the question I am raising.

This introductory paragraph over at WP:UBX contradicts WP:NOTCENSORED so I'd like you to weigh in at WT:UBX, it'll only take 5 minutes of your time. I've sent this message because the topic has not had much community input

Wiki-tactical nuke level measures

Hi Rlevse. I don't want to be hard on anyone nor to get involved with all this stuff, but I fear that ArbCom's lack of ability to keep faith in its own sanctions is the main cause of all these threads. A bunch of the EEMLers came without any basis to get sanctions reduced, and ArbCom gave in pretty easily. Now all of them feel entitled to get their sanctions overturned, while their opponents find it hard to swallow that they're having all these nationalism-driven fights with guys (actually, mainly Radeksz) who are supposed to be banned from the area. You may need nukes eventually, but you need to start off with the kind of firmness and immovable resolution that wins their respect. Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 23:37, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

You may be partly right, but the real root of all these nationalistic ethnic wars is people who refuse to behave and follow wiki policy and the golden rule; generally because they're fueled by hundreds of years of ethnic strife and can only accept their own version of the "truth". For more, see Piotrus's section above. It's high time people learned wiki is not the place to foment their ethnic wars.RlevseTalk 23:53, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

DYK edit

If you're concerned about the sequence of DYK photos, why don't you participate in the prep sets, queues, and WT:DYK instead of unilaterally changing the main page after a queue is moved there? I find that somewhat disruptive and unfair.RlevseTalk 01:14, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

I noticed that we had four architectural images on the main page, so I replaced that one with a portrait (the only other suitable image that I saw for any of the items) to improve the variety. How was this "disruptive" and "unfair," and why have you taken such a hostile tone? —David Levy 01:23, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm not being hostile. People put a lot of work into those queues (BTW I had nothing to do with that particular queue) and you're showing total disregard for that. What you should have done is posted at WT:DYK. Also DYK is separate from all the other sections on the main page. And what is wrong with 4 architecture images anyway? It was sheer coincidence. Some editor was happy to see his article with image on the main page and you just waylaid that. Why didn't you change the FA on the main page?RlevseTalk 01:31, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
