Admin?

Discussing policy is a good qualification in a candidate, I was thinking of incivility, 3RR or the like. Having strong opinions does not disqualify you from being an admin, as long as you are polite and considerate of others' points of view. Tim Vickers 20:47, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

My criteria are a lot broader than most, since I feel that since it isn't a big deal all users we can trust not to go crazy should be admins - you have to disqualify yourself, rather than qualify yourself. That said, you have a clean block log, solid contributions for about a year, ANI, AfD and RfA experience. I've seen you discuss admin actions at ANI and think you have a good handle on what works and how things are done. I trust the community to alert the discussion to any personal idiosyncrasies that could cause problems, so I am happy to nominate anybody meeting those criteria. Hi Random, first off, congratulations. I hope you find the tools useful. I also have a small favor to ask. You might have noticed that your nomination was one of several others I made over the last two weeks, this was partly spurred by the threat of IPs being allowed to create new pages, but also has a more general objective. This other reason was that I have been a little disturbed by a growing attitude that admins are more than just editors with a few more buttons on their toolbars and are instead "senior editors" with greater authority. I think that the best way of dealing with this idea is to greatly expand the pool of admins to include a wider diversity of the pool of editors.

Since you have now passed the selection, would it be possible for you in turn select and nominate some people you trust? I'd suggest aiming for about three over the next month or so. Of those who are selected, could you ask them in turn to select and nominate three candidates. Such a chain of trust should result, over time, in a greatly enlarged pool of admins from a wide variety of backgrounds and thus provide a simple and effective way of spreading the responsibility - perhaps to the point where becoming an admin is seen as normal and expected, rather than a major achievement. Hey there Random832, Congratulations on becoming an administrator. Obviously, it is unlikely that you will know how to use the tools at first and mistakes are bound to happen, so if you would like to practice using them, with step by step guides to follow, in an environement that you can do no harm in, then why not pop down to the new admin school where we have pages on blocking, deleting and restoring pages, protecting and unprotecting pages and viewing deleted pages. Deletion of Sarah Van Patten page

I don't understand why you deleted this page. Please explain. Sarah is one of less than 100 principal ballet dancers in the United States and Wikipedia has a section for Ballet dancers' bios. There are lots of bios already in the section - many with less performing experience and achievement than Sarah. I will be happy to work on the article, but how can I when it has been so quickly deleted? Also, ballet is a very specialized field. I suggest you take a look at the other ballet dancer bios for reference. Or google "Sarah van patten" to get a sense of her prominence in the field. Should I include dance reviews in the article? That seems too much to me.

Speedy delete the original research image Image:Teutonic_takeover.PNG is used in edit wars at Teutonic takeover of Danzig (Gdańsk), History of Gdańsk (Danzig), Pomerelia in order to supersede the proper sourced map Image:Pommerellen.png. It is part of a compaingn by some Poles to deny the 600y years of history of Danzig. Wikipedia footnotes & references

Hi Random - I'm going to undertake the task, over the next week or so, of furthering your work on the footnoting & referencing of sources for the Gary Forrester article. As you have pointed out, even after your extensive footnote rearrangement, there are several multi-references in some of the notes, and other tidy-ing up issues. I haven't done this before (work on Wikipedia footnotes), but I think I understand how you were proceeding - basically, that every reference/source gets its own number, then you cite with that number throughout the article whenever that source supports a fact (together with any other numbers, if more than one source supports a point). If I've counted correctly, there are 44 separate sources for this particular article, each of which will get its own number, and then the numbers will be assigned as appropriate to the asserted facts. Does it sound like I am on the right path? I don't want to mess around with (and build upon) your previous work unless I am following your methodology. I strongly oppose the attempt to marginalize the fact that Danzig was called Danzig for over 600 years. AO crest image

The link I provided is the source of this image. I , however, have edited it (most notably in colour), to make it more accurate and in keeping with the official logo (the old image was too dark- from a separate website to the actual school). That is why I have replaced the image. Not all images have direct sources via a url. I did not realise I had to state this. Very sorry for the inconvenience caused. Seeking advice

Hi Random - Please see my separate reply on the Forrester discussion page. I'm afraid we might have done the wrong thing, albeit with good intentions. As I said on the discussion page: "Four of the people working on the article (including me) are his oldest kids (all in university - he has two younger ones still at home). We've been trying to make this article right after it got deleted when he was doing it himself and getting carried away. Is that relationship a problem? He's not directly involved in this second effort. If there's a problem, we'd better bow out, but we were just trying to get the facts right and meet the sourcing concerns previously expressed, in a much more objective manner. We've had to pull these sources together from contacts in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and other places, which hasn't been easy." Now I'm not sure what should be done. What are your thoughts? I think we could get these footnotes sorted out in about a week (completing what you started), and it would just be an administrative thing, not adding any content, but we don't want to blur the lines. An alternative is just to send the proposed footnote revisions through to you, so that you could assess and edit, although that would be a lengthy note and I hate to impose on you. Mr. Randi is mentioned on the William Rodriguez article, as Rodriguez once worked for Randi as an assistant. User:Jrandi was editing that section and clearly knows who Mr. Randi is. That is really not acceptable, per WP:USERNAME. As well, Randi, his foundation, and discussion forums are well known concerning the topic of 9/11 conspiracy theories. Willie Rodriguez himself has posted there, and has been subject of much discussion there. I have suspicions as to who was really editing from that account, but per WP:USERNAME, it doesn't matter.

Also, in the future, it would be better to ask on my talk page or e-mail me. The blocking admin may know more details. In this situation, I prefer not discussing on User talk:Jrandi. --Aude (talk) 02:15, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Next time, you will run into a case involving different admins. That's what I meant by "blocking admin". In this case, I should have mentioned more of my concerns on ANI and say to e-mail me for details. I'm simply alarmed at the edits from that account, concerned about who might have been editing, and also concerned about WP:BLP. Thus, careful to watch what I say, especially to that person who was editing from that account. Hey, there. I think you jumped the gun in deleting 27 edits on this article.

There is, in fact, NOT a copyright violation, but a use of text from the Portuguese language Wikipedia. This language has ended up on another GNU-licensed site, as I reported on Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English a few minutes ago.

Andreas seems to have been rather imprecise in reporting this as a copyvio - he's done odd things before, but he's basically a good guy. Talk to him and find out what he has to say.

The problem we have on PagesNeedingTranslation is that we don't let people cut and paste text from other Wikipedias as a way of making an end-run around the usual translation process. We also watch for other deletables, including copyvio.

This article should be restored, at least to its machine-translated version, and not all the way back to its original stub beginning. There's a lot of good formatting and stuff that was put in in some of those 27 edits. --Cbdorsett 15:44, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Unicode blacklist

I happened to see an old comment of yours referring to a "unicode blacklist" to make it send &#xxx; instead of unicode characters to browsers that mess them up - it's been suggested that iCab on Mac OS 9 has trouble with unicode characters in forms inputs, though I can't check it myself (and the user who has been having trouble has other difficulties, etc, that make it hard to communicate). It's in fact called $wgBrowserBlackList, and is set on LocalSettings.php. This means you have to know the correct user agent string for the problematic browser, and ask a developer to add it to the list for you. --cesarb (talk) 23:33, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining things. Even though their will be editors (me included) that don't like the new policy, but what makes the transition worse is how both Betacommand and Hammersoft operate. They never give forewarning, they come out of no where and edit on a article they have never been before. They leave only a little explication and most editors do not know of the policy or guidelines changes. They rather war edit then discuses things and even if you do get them to a talk page, they still don't explain it as well as you did. In my opinion, they operate way too shady and don't treat other editors with respect that what causes things to get out of hand more then what they should. Dear Random832, Since you are an admin, i would like to tell you that well, it all started when I saw that Bowmister (follow the 1 link)[1] vandalized McDonald's article so I told them that vandalizing is wrong. Then they tell me that I am targeting him, but no administrator or bot told me that I was targeting him, because he is clearly misinformed. It also says on Wikipedia:No personal attacks that (I am paraphrasing) telling U that their information at X is wrong because of Y is not targeting. I said to Bowmister (follow the 2 link)[2](U) that vandalizing like you did to McDonald's saying that their coffee is brewed from human flesh(X) is wrong and it can get you banned.(Y) Then, he talls me that targeting can get me banned? Well I wasn't targeting!!!!! Now this is not targeting, and I learn from my mistakes, but obviously they doesn't! And they are just being difficult. Oh, and on their user page it says on a list of people huu are fat, (Huu?) It says a lot of names, and then RayquazaDialgaWeird2210! I just cannot believe him! And if you can't, just see for yourself- any Wikipedian would think he is unpleasent! Anyway, please give me a way to approach them so I don't get banned because I am very conscious about this and now, and when I posted on his discusion. I have been working on the encyclopedia (yes I mean mainspace), just userbox templates are a dark corner of Wikipedia no one really works on. Now, I saw you said Wikipedia works with consensus made by the Wikipedia community. Now I want to know something. Many, many people find homosexuality inappropriate and some even find it somewhat offensive, you can't deny this. Perhaps a majority of the world think this (I even saw a homosexual who thought homosexuality was wrong, I believe on dr. Phil). Now what if one day the entire world's population would be registered or contributing (in)to Wikipedia/media.org, is it then justified to delete, and thus censor, one's userbox with "I am homosexual"?

• If you say yes, then I understand that because you are a Wikipedian.
• If you say no, I don't understand why there isn't a better policy on userboxes and the definitions of the appropriate. Such as deleting inflammatory (see quote from my talkpage).

Of course, homosexuality should not be the only issue and one could come up with many more, but the point is that the consensus method is not right when discussing inflammatory, offensive, right, wrong etc.
