You can use a template call instead

Hi Ramtears, I noticed you're adding a Navbox to a number of articles. Instead of pasting in the full Navbox code, it is better to put in the code {{First PLA Shang Jiang}}, which automatically adds the Navbox to the articles. This keeps the code all in one place (the template); thus, if the template needs to be changed all pages will be instantly updated instead of having to update them all at once. See the code of Gan Siqi for an example of how to do this. Also, don't put categories inside of <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags, as this prevents them from working properly. Re: Title Misspelling

Yes, you can move it to Sen-oku Hakuko Kan per its official website. But we may also keep Sen'oku Hakkokan as a redirect. There are 166 hits for Sen'oku Hakkokan by Google Search, even more than Sen-oku Hakuko Kan's 122 hits and Sen'oku Hakukokan's 49 hits. I think that all the other alternative spellings can be created as redirects. Even if Sen'oku Hakkokan is wrong, it's OK to leave it alone. Wikipedian allows some wrong spellings to be redirects, for example, United Kindom. For further information, see Category:Redirects from misspellings. Re: Wubu County

Sorry, I don't have hard-copy dictionary. According to my personal knowledge, 堡 indeed has a second pronunciation Bǔ, usually used in Northwest China's place names such as Wayaobu (瓦窑堡). But I cannot give you any evidence since you never trust online dictionaries, especially Kingsoft. Then why not follow Wubu County Government's official website? Some Chinese place names have unusual pronunciations. For example, Hongdong County actually should be Hongtong County. 洞 in this case is not pronounced as Dòng, but as Tóng, a very unusual pronunciation. But I am tired of arguing and requesting to move. My reply to your comment about Chen Guoling

Actually, if you'll note my edit summary, you'll see I only replaced the speedy tag that was placed by Leonard^Bloom. My edit summary reads "Re-adding speedy tag placed by Leonard^Bloom for process. Adding {{hangon}}. Speedy tag was removed by article creator." I re-added the speedy tag because it is not appropriate for an editor to remove a speedy tag from an article that that editor created. The proper procedure is to add a {{hangon}} tag instead, to state you're contesting the speedy deletion. As you'll note, I replaced the speedy tag you removed, and I added the {{hangon}} tag you should have placed instead. I have no objection to the article or the subject's notability. In fact, when the admin declined the speedy, and changed it to a proposed deletion, I objected to the {{prod}} closing the proposed deletion and keeping the article in place. My edit summary for that was "Object to {{prod}}. This seems like a decent enough stub article about a chinese military general." So, there's no need to argue. I'm not disputing the subject's notability. I'm just objecting to how you handled your objection to the speedy deletion. AubreyEllenShomo (talk) 01:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Categories and References

Greetings. I see you have created a number of new articles lately. This is great. However, you are creating them without placing them into the appropriate categories, which creates work for other Wikipedia editors who have to re-research each article in order to place it properly. You are also creating articles without proper citing proper references. Without proper references an article can not be considered verifiable and will probably be deleted.

Please go back and fix the articles you have created since you know the about the contents of each. This would include Lin Shusen, Chen Guoling, Fang Fenghui, Jiang Weixin among others.

You are amazing. You are creating so many new articles, I don't have time to check over all of them! One thing to remember is to add a stub tag for short articles. It should go between the categories and the interlanguage link if there is one. You can use {{china-politician-stub}}, {{china-bio-stub}}, or {{China-mil-bio-stub}}. Re: Lu Hao

I had noticed this issue and also found the disambiguation difficult because their career backgrounds are so similar. Maybe we can temporarily move the current Lu Hao to Lu Hao (born 1947) for the Gansu Party Secretary and establish Lu Hao (born 1967) for the Communist Youth League Secretary. Hi, Ramtears, and thanks for your comments on my Talk page. One source I used for the structure of the GPD was a (*ahem*) US "State" Department publication called something like "Directory of Chinese People's Liberation Army Officials," and it dated back to 2000 or 2001. Not classified, but also not available (generally) outside official government sources. To avoid users having trouble overseas, there is no publisher, but people I have spoken with over the years all know who is really behind it (yeah, "The Company"). I believe it to be authoritative, but there is always room for name changes. On your specific points, I've removed the redundant "Cultural Departments. My guess is the 8-1 Film Studio is probably directly under another bureau. As for the rest, you seem to have the sources, so go ahead and make the changes. You might also want to check out some of the other pages I've edited, such as Li Desheng, Xu Shiyou, Chen Xilian, PLA Air Force and the various Military Regions. Re: Plagiarism issue

Ramtears, thanks for your concern about the copyright issue. Wikipedia permits anyone to duplicate its materials under the GFDL rules. According to the edit history of this Wikia site's article Liu Bocheng, its content was copied and pasted from Wikipedia's article Liu Bocheng on January 21, 2007. So it's clear that Wikipedia does not violate copyright in this case. I agree that determining copyright violation may be difficult sometimes. If we cannot tell which version was posted first, probably we can presume innocence. Anyway it's up to Wikipedians' discussion and consensus. Li Shida

Hi. I've just categorised this article, and was wondering if you could clarify what 'imperial graduate' means ? There's no explanation in the article, and I can't find anything in Wikipedia. Chinese mathematicians

It is conventional in mathematics to use the "wrong" Western ordering for Chinese mathematicians. It is also conventional for the English Wikipedia to follow English usage, see WP:UE. We thus use Shing-Tung Yau and Shiing-shen Chern. For politicians, we use Chiang Kai-shek but H. H. Kung, this is consistent with following English usage, not trying to determine what the "correct" names would be. Can you repair the inconsistency you have created and move Tian Gang back to where it is supposed to be? (The "correct name" 田刚 is probably not a good idea in this context). Thanks for your message and instructions. I've read very carefully the article Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese). My understanding is generally Chinese name starts with surname, e.g. Tian Gang. The only exception is the person is more familiar to English readers. As for Tian Gang, the Chinese media has a massive coverage on him, and I doubt there are more western readers knowing him than Chinese fellows. More importantly, if we edit it as Gang Tian, how about other prominent Chinese mathematicians, who also enjoyed world recognition? I'm not sure Tian Gang's achievement is comparable to those of Hua Luogeng, Chen Jingrun, Su Buqing or Wu Wenjun. All are famous mathematicians and all their names start with surnames. If we convert them following your example, that's a lot of work.

Now I see Tian Gang also holds a position at Princeton. This may explain the case. Does it mean that as long as a person is hired in a western country, his name should follow English order? Well, let's see the fact. There're hundreds of Chinese scientists existing in Wiki, and their names start with surnames. In future, some of them may be well recognized in the western countries, or be as famous as Dr. Gang Tian, (very likely), or some may be hired overseas and thus gain more popularity. Shall we, at that time, switch the order of their names?

I'm not a mathematician of a biographical writer or something. Either Tian Gang or Gang Tian is none of my interest. But this issue is worth discussing, at least for the uniformity of Wiki style. Regards. Ramtears (talk) 01:22, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

The only exception is the person is more familiar to English readers.. No, that's not what it says. It says to use the name more familiar to English readers. It says nothing about taking into account if the person is more familiar to non-Chinese. As for the other names you bring up, the naming convention says, again, to use the name more familiar to English readers. Hi, Ramtears, nice to see you. You are right. As a rule, the article for a Chinese person should place his/her surname first as the article title. But there is also an exception: if the person's Chinese name is familiar with English ordering, then the given name should be placed first. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese)#Order of names. I understand that sometimes it's difficult to determine whether the rule or the exception should be applied to a person, such as Gang Tian. I am categorizing some photos that I've uploaded to wiki commons, and am curious about an architectural element which I've seen on top of some temples in Thailand and China. As you've written a few articles on Buddhist temples in China, I am asking your opinion on it. On top of Thailand's Wat Arun, this thing appears as a 7-spiked trident (really, it looks more like a Jewish menorah to me!); in southern Hubei, it's very common on village temples/shrines, and appears as a trident with an inverted trident under it. Do you think that's the Hindu Trishula, in its Thai Buddhist and Chinese Buddhist variants, respectively? Would you know if it (in either form) has any special meaning other than "this is a Buddhist temple"? (For example, the Christian cross appears in somewhat different forms on Orthodox, Catholic, etc. churches - would Buddhism have similar architecturally expressed divisions)? As far as I remember, it does not seem to appear much on Buddhist temples in other areas I've visited.

Thank you for your response at my talk page. The 寿 (shou) explanation sounds credible, and definitely is not something that I would have come up with on my own. I have updated captions accordingly. I suppose I can interpret this 寿-derived "double trident" ornament, wherever it appears, as a sign that the building is dedicated to some Chinese traditional local cult. Along the same line, one more question. I suppose that the words 在 (when used as a noun, as in "三星在") or 公祠 (as in "永公祠", seen on the same very 三星在 shrine, or elsewhere on Image:Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall.JPG) mean something like "shrine (of the traditional Chinese religion)" or "ancestral hall". What about 世第 (also in the form 卋第), which I also saw quite often in Hubei? For example, 南阳世第 on a temple-like building in Image:LonggangZhen-NanyangShidi-0025.jpg, or 颖川卋第 on a fairly plain house in Image:Tongshan-County-village-house-9876.jpg; on another house nearby, it was 颖川世家 instead: Image:Tongshan-County-village-house-9880.jpg. Would the whole inscription mean something like "The home (or hall) of the people [whose ancestors came] from Yingchuan/Nanyang"? Vmenkov (talk) 01:43, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

I think he did. The name was "Chinese Empire", and he himself was called the "Emperor of Chinese Empire". I know it's not single-charactered and seems weird. But it is the case.
