Editing Biological_classification.svg edit

Hi there. I've made some tweaks to your image on biological classification (just tweaking colours and typefaces, hope you don't mind!) but I can't find anywhere to upload a new version, and I didn't want to create a new file. I appreciate your thanking me for contributing Greenhouse Mafia.

The Lonie Report of 1980 is proof to me that vested interests have been dictating government policy in Australia for a lot longer than Howard has been Prime Minister. The ability of mineral and car companies to control transport and energy policy probably dates back to the "Northern Development" mania of the Menzies era, which gave companies access to by far the largest mineral deposits on Earth and allowed them to not only control politicians but also to dictate who gets promoted to the road and public transport bureaucracies - making sure the road bureaucracy is much more effective and assertive than the public transport one.

User:Pengo/taxotest edit

Right, sorry about this, but that page has found its way into three article categories. These are categories that readers will use to navigate the encyclopedia and find pages similar to the one they are already reading, and so it is innappropriate for userpages to find their way in. As a temporary solution, I have blanked the page. In future, please try to avoid placing it into those categories- perhaps create a mirror of the templates or something, without the cats. J Milburn 09:56, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Change of plan, I am not blanking, another user is dealing with it with WP:AWB. J Milburn 09:58, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
No worries. If they get bored with AWB I don't mind it being blanked really. —Pengo 09:59, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was going to use AWB until I realized all the categories were added via transcluded templates, so looks like blanking it is. Feel free to recreate a subst'd version of the page without categories, though. VegaDark 10:04, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah you can hide the categories with a template parameter, but i'll just unblank the page while I need it. easier. —Pengo 10:20, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The suggestion to merge sounds 'automatic' - not everything that has same topic should be mereged to generic pages (where upon will be lost). Lions’ age has meaning outside of the generic lion page. I preserve the right not to share 'automatic' suggestions toward merger. user:kosigrim

Fair use rationale for Image:Ap indonesia activist munir 2101.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Ap indonesia activist munir 2101.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Missing image Image:Finny.svg edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Finny.svg, by Strangerer, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Finny.svg is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Finny.svg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:Finny.svg itself. Concern regarding citation added to Gunns#Gunns 20 edit

I'm a little uneasy about the citation you added to the referenced section, because I really don't think it meets WP:NOR being a information from a primary participant in the case. If it was say a link to a news article reporting on the case that covered the claims of the participants then it would pass. However, because the page in question being linked to is a primary source and is heavy on POV it really shouldn't be included particularly given the emotional and highly charged nature of the subject matter being covered. Please contact me via my talk page with any questions. Cheers, Thewinchester (talk) 07:17, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

The claim it's supporting is that opposing parties consider the case to be silencing criticism, so of course it's going to be someone with that POV saying it. —Pengo 07:23, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's kind of the point i'm getting at. If we can find another source for this it would be much better all things considered. It's fine if they've said it, ensuring that the comment was reported by a media or similar organisation which meets the secondary sources criteria, it would be the better reference to use. Thewinchester (talk) 07:28, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
He said it, He's said that he's said it. Why do you think we need another source to say that he's said what he says he's said? —Pengo 07:42, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Stalk (botany) edit

Hi! The redirect you made from Stalk (botany) to the disambiguation page Stem is, sorry to say, very unhelpful. The page doesn't have any relation to stalk as a botanical term, nor does even Plant stem (which I assume you intended) mention the term "stalk" in any single point. Do you think you could start an article for Stalk (botany), or if you think it's not worth an article, at least add the term somewhere in Plant stem? I know I can't, so that's why I'm asking. Actually, even a red link to Stalk (botany) would be more helpful, since then somebody with more knowledge could do the job, seeing it's not already done... Thanks! Tuna in Australia edit

Hi there. I was reading out tuna article and noticed a paragraph that you seem to have added here (apologies if I've parsed the edits incorrectly). I'm a little confused by it. What else would be in the can (i.e. taking up the other 49%)? Now that the standard has been "dropped", does that mean that you could sell a completely empty can and call it tuna? wiki-nonsense talk edit

There is no guideline or policy whatsoever that makes it necessary to source a "secure" status in the absence of disagreement over it. Look at Verbascum thapsus and if you can find a good way to source that...

Also, single-paragraph sections, especially ones as short as the one you were recreating, are strongly discouraged by the manual of style, and have long been a criterion for opposing at FAC. splitting that paragraph into its section for the sole purpose of internal-linking is at best misguided, at worst petty (as if the "name and symbolism" section wasn't troublesome enough already!). Circeus 01:57, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't care for unreferenced duck-y "secure". I do care about people improperly replacing that with a "Least concern" category, though (because least concern is only okay for species formally assessed vy the IUCN). In my opinion, a species should be marked "secure" in the absence of a global statement to the contrary, or controversy over status. If a species is not in any endangerment category, then what should we call it if not "secure"? Circeus 03:34, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Nothing. It should be left blank. Status means a status from some external authority. The reader can decide for him or herself when reading the article that the species is not threatened with extinction. But if no one else has said it, we don't. —Pengo 03:52, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

thoughts on the nature of humanity edit

Pengo, you noted "Sex for enjoyment [and perhaps bonobos]" as a defining feature of humanity. I want to present the counter-argument that this is actually an effect of a different characteristic that sets us apart, even from bonobos. Whereas most animal species have an almost entirely food, shelter, and sex-centric society, humanity has achieved relative security with these basics throughout much of our history (the only great threat to us has been ourselves) and is notable because it is the only species which has been capable of marginalizing the necessity for sex. Sex is not the top thing on everyone's mind for our species, and that has allowed us to make significant advances in a great many other areas. Additionally, marginalizing sex in this way has turned it into a partly recreational activity. OcciMoron 15:39, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your thoughts on the nature of humanity.. the idea that "Sex for enjoyment" sets humans (& bonobos) apart from the other animals isn't my own idea.. and i have it listed under "Stupid theories on what sets humans apart" with a bunch of other half-witted theories for that reason.. (I'd like to start an article on these theories some day, or at least add them to the human article or the like).
But you've made some interesting points.. But I have to say that observing various animals in the wild and at zoos, it seems that most animals spend the vast majority of their time doing something other than procreating. So it's hard to say their lives or societies are all that sex-centric. However, sex is still a necessity in the human and animal worlds. Relationships, love stories, and sex are central in any human culture. And I believe sex will only become a marginal activity when sex and reproduction are completely isolated from each other. Which I don't think the majority is ever going to like the idea of all that much, I don't think would ever be completely possible. —Pengo 21:59, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, animals do spend time doing other activities, but generally they are a means to the end of reproduction, all residing at the very lowest part of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Occasionally animals with high parental involvement make forays into the second level of that hierarchy, but that is only ever in a context of maintaining reproductive fitness. Humans have a *need* to fulfill the other categories, which has led to incredible staying power as a species. OcciMoron 15:37, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't accept Maslow's hierarchy as anything more than a moralistic hypothesis, with little basis in science (i.e. it's not testable, especially not with animals). There's no reason your argument that animals do all they do to aid reproduction (or the furthering of their kin) cannot apply to humans. The only difference with animals is that they can't tell you otherwise. —Pengo 00:21, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image source problem with Image:BASIX logo.png edit

Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:BASIX logo.png. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:10, 12 September 2007 (UTC). Image copyright problem with Image:Green Star logo.png edit

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Green Star logo.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 11:04, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 19:14, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, Pengo, I really like the answer you gave. It's clear that the poster of the question does not have a particularly profound understanding of biology, and your reply did a very nice job of laying out some of the unstated ramifications of the question and explaining accurately but understandably the technical details of the matter [that it seems was being asked about]. Translation of the IUCN template edit

Hi, Pengo. Since I don't have Inkscape on my computer, and there isn't much space left on my hard drive, I would like to translate it in another program (like you suggest). What should I use? Thanks! Y. Anné (80.201.105.232 (talk) 19:39, 15 March 2008 (UTC))Reply

You could have a try using notepad or any other text editor (seriously). The words should be plain text within the .svg files (which are a type of XML file) —Pengo 23:32, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the quick answer. I'll give it a try... 81.240.59.156 (talk) 16:18, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
A small question: I'm able to edit the image in Microsoft Word, but I can't view the image (since I don't have Inkscape installed...). Should I try to paste the whole code of the image in the Sandbox before uploading, or is that useless? And: is it OK to upload the code to Wikicommons? 81.240.59.156 (talk) 17:16, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Uploading in a sandbox won't help, as Wikipedia (Mediawiki) will only display the image if it's uploaded as an image. I'd really recommend downloading Inkscape if you have the space for it (it's free, open source, and has no ads or malware). Otherwise, I would NOT recommend MS Word, as it may mangle a plain text document, and instead I'd recommend simply editing Notepad (comes with Windows), or Notepad++, which is only a 2mb download. As for Commons, You can (and should) certainly upload to Commons. If your upload doesn't work out you can "nominate for deletion" (on the left menu) or upload another image with the same file name to replace the old. —Pengo 22:44, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm stomping all over your turf at Template talk:Taxobox, spruiking my rewrite of the taxobox's conservation status code. My apologies in advance if I have cast the current code in a bad light. P.S. I noticed some of those status image (the Canadian ones, I think) have "Extirpated" misspelled as "Extripated".

Information about dingo-mongrels? edit

Hy, you wrote a while ago in the dingo article. Since I'm still searching for information to improve the german article and maybe later on the english one I wanted you to ask, whether you know where I can find reliable information about dingo-mongrels. And I realy mean reliable, I've found quite a lot but that was mostly the old "they are wrong by default"-crap and nothing of that was or even seemed proven. There were only few exceptions (mostly Corbett, Jenkins and from Trumler [a german cynologist who studied domestic dogs and therefore also dingoes and their mongrels]) who seemed to know their stuff and who really studied. So do you know any sources? Or at least some recent research on the topic? Best wishes --Inugami-bargho (talk) 10:39, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (File:Edius logo.png) edit

Thanks for uploading File:Edius logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Latin Translation edit

Can you please explain the purpose of your user subpage, because it sounds like something that I might want to help out on. Bugboy52.4 (talk) 21:37, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The reason for the page (wiktionary:User:Pengo/Latin) is that I get frustrated with not knowing what any of the scientific names of species mean. So I got all the names of all the species (or at least the ones that IUCN red list lists), and ranked the species part of names in order of how common they were. The idea was that others could then see what words they could create dictionary entries for first to make the most impact. Unfortunately it never really took off, and even common ones like "rufescens" still have no translation. —Pengo 02:19, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry it took so long, but I have to say that finding the meaning is hard to find. And rufescens is Latin meaning to become red. Can you help me find the etymology of Trombiculidae, though it might come from greek thrombus, can you help? Bugboy52.4 (talk) 19:59, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

File source problem with File:Orange-shelf-fungus.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Orange-shelf-fungus.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:33, 18 March 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. IngerAlHaosului (talk) 15:33, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Orange-shelf-fungus.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Orange-shelf-fungus.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. IngerAlHaosului (talk) 15:33, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
