Sorry re Highwood, Illinois
Regarding the [Illinois edit], I must have missed your response initially. I am working on a somewhat-delayed project of getting all places (incorporated and unincorporated census-designated places, but not yet including minor civil divisions [townships in states that have them]) updated with 2020 Census data, using the CenPop semi-automated script which I have developed off and on over the last 6-7 years.
As part of the 2020 Census update, I was hoping to automate to the maximum extent possible replacing the "as of the year census, the population was xxx" (and variants) with 2020 data for those many articles from places that rarely get updated. To avoid leaving up incorrect references (i.e. to previous decade populations), I had the script removing references subsequent to the "as of ..." sentence.
I could probably add an exception to leave it alone if it already says as of 2020 (or whichever decade, 2030 will be on us soon enough lol).
However, a safer and more comprehensive alternative would be to insert a reference of my own (linking back to the US Census API) after the script's newly inserted "as of most recent census, [current population]." Would you be okay with this latter alternative or should I just try to do the exception above to not mess with references people have already put in for this decade?

- Hello, Sorry i am a little late. I just started a new job. I think what you are doing is great. Just a few questions. Does the script automatically populate (and remove info) or are you populating some or all of it yourself? Where do you hold the link to the population that you are updating? How does someone know that you updated the density calculation and that is not just a leftover density amount from the 2010 census? Could you show an example of what you are proposing? - I hope you don't mind if I add to this discussion here. I noticed that you've been changing some population density calculations back to "auto" in city infoboxes. Just be aware that the "auto" calculation is inaccurate, as it calculates the density over the total area rather than the accepted practice of calculating density on land area only. Would you be interested in taking a stab at fixing the calculation? (It's well beyond my capabilities and apparently most others' as well.) Another option, which I've used in the past for population estimates, is to add the comment "as of __year__" next to the density figure. - It should be possible to program it to display nothing if land area is not set (i.e. for newly created municipalities/census designated places/etc), but yes, my script is linked into the Census Gazetteer files and updates to the latest land/water/total areas.
- Does someone have an idea of who to petition for access to template programming and modification? I have long wanted to add a [All data is from (links to previous Censuses) unless otherwise specified to the US Census population templates. County flags in infoboxes
Hi there. For settlements, please don't add county level flags to the infoboxes. Per MOS:INFOBOXFLAG only the country and first level subdivision (in this case state) may have flags. So the county flag cannot be shown in the infobox. Thanks. Canterbury Tail talk 19:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, I did not know that. I started because someone linked the county flag to a non-free image so I fixed it. Other counties had like half of the entities with county flags so I added a bunch. My original task was to go through all the new CDPs in New Jersey and setting them up with population, proper info boxes, proper categories, elevation, and GNIS numbers. I will not add anymore county flags but it does seem like a strange rule that will just lead to people adding flags and others removing them.Patapsco913 (talk) 20:11, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- Well flags are discouraged, but not banned at the other administrative levels, also per MOS:INFOBOXFLAG. At the end of the day the flags in infoboxes are so small as to be practically useless and just distracting blocks of colour. Many settlement articles, even in the US, don't any as they're just noise which is why they're discouraged in general. Are you able to go through and clear out all the flags you added? Hello. As of writing this, there are 29 entries at Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag and 28 of those are because you've improperly "closed" the HTML tag for small element (e.g. diff, diff). It should be <small>Text</small>, not <small>Text<small/>. I've fixed a few of those (example diff), but feel free to fix the rest by yourself if you wish to.
