WikiProject Breakfast

I am trying to leave a message on the projects talkpage, but I can't edit it because it has Flow enabled. I then thought that if I removed the Flow template temporarily I could leave a message and restore the template, but what I removed was not the flow software, but some informative template, and then I wasn't able to restore it, and each edit I then made got worse, and I can't work out how to restore it, because the page doesn't behave normally and allow undo. Would you look into it for me, and repair the mess I made. And, if you know, could you tell me how to leave messages on flow enabled pages. Regards SilkTork ✔Tea time 14:31, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi SilkTork: Due to the interface at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Breakfast, I can't access it to edit. As such, I will notify people who work on Flow with talkback messages to this discussion in hopes to obtain input/resolution. NORTH AMERICA1000 16:27, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping, Northamerica1000. Hi SilkTork, I've partially fixed-up the header, and will now file bugs for the problems with the text-entry box not expanding properly, and the WikiProject banner template not saving as expected (visible <table> code). They'll be adding (undo) links to the history, soon (phab:T90073).
As for posting a message in Flow, click on "Start a new topic" (screenshot) to begin. Please let me know if you have any other problems or questions. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 17:07, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Quiddity: Thanks very much for your fixes regarding this matter. NORTH AMERICA1000 17:11, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for sorting this guys. Sorry for the mess. And as regards clicking on "Start a new topic" - I tried that. I wrote in the box with the blue bar. Couldn't enter it onto the page when I finished. Tried the box below that. Again couldn't enter it onto the page. Tried writing in both boxes - using the one with the blue bar as a heading. Still couldn't enter it on the page. After banging my head on the wall three times I then tried removing the flow enabled template. SilkTork ✔Tea time 17:49, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Symphony

Hello, some time ago you launched a campaign to introduce WP standard referencing practice on Symphony, and if you will look at the Talk page you will see that your point of view carried the day and achieved (reluctant) consensus. Might it be appropriate for you to go ahead and make the change? Opus33 (talk) 23:43, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Opus33: I had performed this once before, but it was reverted, so I started the talk page discussion. Despite the rough consensus ("rough" per limited participation) at the discussion to use inline citations, I hesitate to perform the work again, because someone may very well come along and revert it again. Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention

Hi Northamerica1000,

I just noticed (must have been sleeping :-) this changewhich you introduced atwp:wer. I have tried to undo it, but when I do I get this message: The edit could not be undone due to conflicting intermediate edits; if you wish to undo the change, it must be done manually. Can you help please. Thanks, Ottawahitech (talk) 19:22, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Ottawahitech: Why do you want to remove the banner? I think it serves a functional purpose that encourages participation. NORTH AMERICA1000 19:27, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Was this change discussed? I believe such changes should be agreed upon. Ottawahitech (talk) 19:37, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Ottawahitech: It was added about 16 months ago, and there were no objections whatsoever. Since I think the banner serves a functional purpose, rather than removal, I would prefer for you to initiate a discussion on the talk page, if you'd like. Cheers, NORTH AMERICA1000 19:39, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I decided to remove it. Let's see if anyone notices. I would not object to re-insertion, but not at the top of the page where "real estate" is much more expensive. Ottawahitech (talk) 20:03, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Ottawahitech: I have reverted your edit, because per the above, I think the banner serves a functional purpose that encourages participation. Conversely, removal does nothing to improve the page, and in my opinion, discourages participation. Per WP:BRD, please initiate a discussion on the talk page at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention. NORTH AMERICA1000 20:08, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
There is no reason to remove the sign. It atracks drivers-by. . Buster Seven Talk 20:46, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Ottawahitech: I have again reverted your removal of the banner. Please note above how Buster7 concurs that the Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention page is better with the banner than without it. Per your edit summary after removing the banner again (diff), perhaps you misread Buster7's statement herein. Again, per WP:BRD, please discuss the matter at WT:WER before removing the banner again. Thanks for your consideration. NORTH AMERICA1000 05:29, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Contacting an editor

March 3, 2015

There is a short article on a person, Yonghoon Lee, which was added to Wikipedia December 2014.

The original contributor was SpiritedMichelle. The article was adapted by Northamerica 1000

I have considerably more information to add to this article but I am not knowledgeable or comfortable adding materials.

May I communicate with either editor and ask them if they would be able to add additional information?

Bad deletion or bad deletion logging?

Hi.

Can you please explain this deletion, Angela Beesley:

(Deletion log); 20:54 . . Northamerica1000 (talk | contribs) deleted page Angela Beesley ‎(G8: Page dependent on a deleted or nonexistent page (TW))

WP:CSD#G8 does not authorise deletion of mainspace pages? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 21:48, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

It was a perfectly correct deletion as it was simply a redirect to a deleted page (Angela Beesley Starling, which was deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Angela Beesley Starling (2nd nomination)). BencherliteTalk 21:51, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
I see. I think the deletion log should have referenced the AfD discussion. Odd that I had watchlisted a redirect and not the target, I guess that there was an artilce behind the redirect and a history of copy-pasting? No matter, it is all appropriately deleted, having read the AfD2. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 21:59, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
There was no article behind the redirect - all the history was moved in 2008 when the article was renamed and there was simply one edit recording the move: -

Page history
(del/undel) (diff) 23:13, 5 December 2008 . . AlisonW (talk | contribs | block) (37 bytes) (moved Angela Beesley to Angela Beesley Starling: Name changed upon marriage

AlisonW's page move also gave a Facebook reference which it is unnecessary to repeat. BencherliteTalk 22:06, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Bencherlite. Maybe just ignore me. I just had to scroll my watchlist a tiny bit to see the article deletion 6 minutes earlier. I guess I am still in 2008 and hadn't noticed the page move. I do remember it being a nicely formatted article. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 22:21, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
It appears that this query has been answered by Bencherlite, as their responses have essentially provided explanation. However, if you have any additional questions, just let me know. NORTH AMERICA1000 21:31, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

What do you think about this edit? I use to watch that article som some reson. Hafspajen (talk) 21:16, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

I like this one: Tiroler Speckknödelsuppe is soup with a "Tiroler Knödel/Speckknödel, a large dumpling. The dumpling is basically a semmelknödel, a German bread dumpling, with the addition of bacon
Hi Hafspajen: It seems all right, because it appears that:
  • Unsubstantiated claims have been removed (e.g. this version included "made without yeast" and " in most versions..."). It is entirely possible that some versions may be prepared using yeast, and the notion that it is used as a side dish for meat "in most versions" was not backed by a reliable source. As such, the rewriting of this matter of "often served as a side dish" is acceptable to me.
  • Removal of all the country names, but leaving Central European cuisine in place is an acceptable substitute
  • Per the above, I have edited that article to include countries not listed in the Central European cuisine article (diff).

Merge

Hi NorthAmerica1000, do you remember Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Environmental impact of K-Cups from three months ago? Even though the closing admin closed it as "merge", nothing has happened to the article since then. A month ago I posted a request to the closing admin that the article be re-named before the merge/redirect, in order to avoid WP:UNDUE, but Slakr has not responded despite an additional post on his talk page (he seems to be virtually inactive).

My questions for you:

1. Since you are an admin familiar with the case, could you do the re-name and deletion of the old title (to avoid double redirect), assuming you agree with that proposal? (By the way, two other editors agree with the rename -- DASonnenfeld "thanked" me, and Aladdin Sane agreed on the article's talk page.) A non-admin could move the page but not automatically delete the double redirect, so that's why I'm asking you.

2. If you have time, could you perform the merge to the two destination articles, summarizing the various applicable RSs you found or noted in the AfD into each article (Single-serve coffee container and Keurig) as applicable, in a few sentences in each article? That would help everyone as well.

Here is the article and talk page: Environmental impact of K-Cups, Talk:Environmental impact of K-Cups.

Anyway, I hope you have the time and interest for this; if not, I understand. Softlavender (talk) 02:28, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi Softlavender: Despite having contributed to the AfD discussion, I think I'm going to bow out on becoming involved with this for now. Recent discussion has occurred on the talk page yesterday and today, and I feel that this is the best forum for a consensus to be reached regarding the article. OK no worries; thanks for getting back to me. Softlavender (talk) 10:52, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 2

For this month's issue...

Making sense of a lot of data.

Work on our prototype will begin imminently. In the meantime, we have to understand what exactly we're working with. To this end, we generated a list of 71 WikiProjects, based on those brought up on our Stories page and those who had signed up for pilot testing. For those projects where people told stories, we coded statements within those stories to figure out what trends there were in these stories. This approach allowed us to figure out what Wikipedians thought of WikiProjects in a very organic way, with very little by way of a structure. (Compare this to a structured interview, where specific questions are asked and answered.) This analysis was done on 29 stories. Codes were generally classified as "benefits" (positive contributions made by a WikiProject to the editing experience) and "obstacles" (issues posed by WikiProjects, broadly speaking). Codes were generated as I went along, ensuring that codes were as close to the original data as possible. Duplicate appearances of a code for a given WikiProject were removed.

We found 52 "benefit" statements encoded and 34 "obstacle" statements. The most common benefit statement referring to the project's active discussion and participation, followed by statements referring to a project's capacity to guide editor activity, while the most common obstacles made reference to low participation and significant burdens on the part of the project maintainers and leaders. This gives us a sense of WikiProjects' big strength: they bring people together, and can be frustrating to editors when they fail to do so. Meanwhile, it is indeed very difficult to bring editors together on a common interest; in the absence of a highly motivated core of organizers, the technical infrastructure simply isn't there.

We wanted to pair this qualitative study with quantitative analysis of a WikiProject and its "universe" of pages, discussions, templates, and categories. To this end I wrote a script called ProjAnalysis which will, for a given WikiProject page (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Trek) and WikiProject talk-page tag (e.g. Template:WikiProject Star Trek), will give you a list of usernames of people who edited within the WikiProject's space (the project page itself, its talk page, and subpages), and within the WikiProject's scope (the pages tagged by that WikiProject, excluding the WikiProject space pages). The output is an exhaustive list of usernames. We ran the script to analyze our test batch of WikiProjects for edits between March 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015, and we subjected them to further analysis to only include those who made 10+ edits to pages in the projects' scope, those who made 4+ edits to the projects' space, and those who made 10+ edits to pages in scope but not 4+ edits to pages in the projects' space. This latter metric gives us an idea of who is active in a certain subject area of Wikipedia, yet who isn't actively engaging on the WikiProject's pages. This information will help us prioritize WikiProjects for pilot testing, and the ProjAnalysis script in general may have future life as an application that can be used by Wikipedians to learn about who is in their community.

Complementing the above two studies are a design analysis, which summarizes the structure of the different WikiProject spaces in our test batch, and the comprehensive census of bots and tools used to maintain WikiProjects, which will be finished soon. With all of this information, we will have a game plan in place! We hope to begin working with specific WikiProjects soon.

As a couple of asides...

  • Database Reports has existed for several years on Wikipedia to the satisfaction of many, but many of the reports stopped running when the Toolserver was shut off in 2014. However, there is good news: the weekly New WikiProjects and WikiProjects by Changes reports are back, with potential future reports in the future.
  • WikiProject X has an outpost on Wikidata! Check it out. It's not widely publicized, but we are interested in using Wikidata as a potential repository for metadata about WikiProjects, especially for WikiProjects that exist on multiple Wikimedia projects and language editions.

That's all for now. Thank you for subscribing! If you have any questions or comments, please share them with us.
