Orphaned non-free media (Image:Knockedupmp.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Knockedupmp.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:15, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:GAN of Funerary art edit

Hi Nehrams2020,

Long time no chat. :-) Do you still do WP:GAN reviews, or do you only do sweeps? Would you do a WP:GAN by special request?

Johnbod, Ceoil and I have expended some elbow grease on Funerary art, which I just nommed for GA. I note that there is a closely related nom immediately above ours... but if you have the time and the inclination, I'd be very grateful if you could do a GA review, adding any comments that you feel will help the article forward through the Content Review process... if you can't do it, of course that's OK! ... Thanks! Ling.Nut (talk) 09:37, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, it looks like Maunus snuck in and did a review unexpectedly! I appreciate his review—just as I appreciate your offer to do one. But it seems like it's already been done... thanks anyhow! Ling.Nut (talk) 06:40, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Coordinator opening edit

Nehrams, first let me thank you for your support of my candidacy. I greatly appreciate your taking the time to vote. As you may be aware, we've had to disqualify Creamy3 due to indefinite blocking of his account, and this leaves us with an open position which the new coordinators will appoint. I know that you were somewhat reluctant to return, but several of us have floated your name for the remaining spot. While this is not an offer yet, I wanted to gauge your thoughts on the matter. Personally, I think that it would provide some extra continuity between the two tranches, and would provide a strong connection to the Outreach-related activities (which we are all very grateful for!). In any case, if you could give it some thought and let me know, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks! Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 23:21, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, consensus seems to be that it's yours if you want it. Let me know, so that I can make the congratulations official. :) Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 23:05, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:AnanthabhadramPoster.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:AnanthabhadramPoster.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 12:44, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:2f32.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:2f32.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

New Project edit

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 02:25, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question about the number of images now being removed edit

Is there some reason why a number of previously acceptable images are now being challenged and removed? Please see: <Image:Ashanti.jpg> which I had put up on a sandbox page temporarily and was used by User:Limetolime for the article he was working on, The Muppets' Wizard of Oz‎. Another editor has challenged its status (but has not given a reason) while the other challenges and deletions seem to be coming from bots and admins. Whazzup? Review Fires on the Plain edit

It would be appreciated if you could get to this quickly. Oh, and if you could give me an opinion on my new section in WP:film talk page "Saving Private Ryan - Sniper issue" that would be appreciated as well. I will ask other editors about this as well. Happy editing! Yojimbo501 (talk) 02:01, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. A couple of questions come to mind quickly: How do you get a fair use rational image? I don't know how to. Do you think the "Awards" section should be a subsection of the "Reception" section? Should the rotten tomatoes thing be taken out? Should "Modern Reviews" be merged with "Reception"? Thats all for questions. I think I know where to get a little more for the "Production" section. Well, Thanks. Me and Dekkapai have worked on it quite a bit and it's always nice to hear that your work is good. Yojimbo501 (talk) 19:09, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Red Rain in Kerala edit

There are, as you note, several issues that need to be addressed with the article on the Red Rain In Kerala. One in particular is that the research by Louis and Kumar is severely flawed. This would be apparent to most readers who take the trouble to consult the original papers; unfortunately many do not. The most glaring flaw is that even had a comet containing tens of tons of spores arrived and broken up in the Earth's atmosphere, the 'spores' simply would not have continued to fall over much the same relatively small area of land for a period of six or seven weeks. There are strong and variable winds in the upper atmosphere. This seems to me to be common sense, but the opinion on Wikipedia seems to be that to mention this would be Original Research.

However, to answer some of your points:

"Another theory is that the rain contained mammalian blood, a large flock of bats having been killed at high altitude, perhaps by a meteor"

This seems to have come from one of the early articles in New Scientist. I think it may have been meant to suggest that the authors of the 'spores from space' idea were 'completely batty'. (As I recall, the comment was made by someone at the Open University, but can't be sure without looking up the details.) It is difficult to know how best to modify this so that the meaning becomes clear without compromising the original author.

"Chemical analyses indicate that they consist of organic material, and so they proposed that the particles may be microbes of extraterrestrial origin"

Louis and Kumar find a broadly similar chemical composition to that given in the CESS report, which is a mixture of about 2:1 organics to inorganics. In the absence of any other explanation they conclude that the particles must therefore be spores from space. This is in their papers, already cited.

"Louis and Kumar suggest that [the red rain] was caused by the disintegration of a small comet entering the Earth's atmosphere, and that this comet contained large quantities of the red particles" They did suggest this, despite the critical failure of this hypothesis as mentioned above. It's stated in their papers, already cited.

"This article covers the topic well..." Hmmm. It fails to mention, inter alia, that Chandra Wickramasinghe hosted an astrobiology conference at Cardiff University, attended by Louis and some of the 'leading lights' in the field, such as Milton Wainwright and Gil Levin. Samples of the spores were available at nearby laboratories, and time was given to discussion of the subject. They apparently failed to reach any conclusions; at least none seem to have been announced.

To my mind it still seems overwhelmingly most probable that the red rain was the result of incomplete combustion of chemical waste at the Eloor industrial zone. Though I suppose that this must remain 'original research', I can't see that the article in its present shape is doing anything but a disservice to Wikipedia and its readers. (I'm pleased to note that mention of incomplete incineration is included in the schools version of Wikipedia.)

My question? Given that much of Wikipedia provides useful and generally accurate information, and has administrators with a broad range of understanding, why isn't ir possible to spot more of the articles that are clearly sub-standard? Davy p (talk) 02:03, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

User talk:130.216.1.16 edit

I have unblocked the above IP (which you blocked for a week for vandalism) following an unblock request. A WHOIS shows it is registered to the University of Auckland. When considering the unblock I took into account a number of past constructive contributions, the fact that it is shared by a large university, and the time served since your block. In my unblock explanation I left a note indicating that further vandalism, even though the IP is shared, will result in further blocks. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to discuss. Thanks! KnightLago (talk) 02:37, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

First, thanks for all of the GA re-reviewing. Unfortunately, there is no single link for that fact. The sources were from a large database, which occassionally changes its links. However, the links are now good for that section. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:51, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 17:39, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Predator face2.JPG) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Predator face2.JPG.

GA question edit

I have a question of curiousity that isn't intended to be accusatory, as I'm sure there's a reason; I just don't know what it is. I'm curious why when doing GA or FA reviews on articles, reviewers sometimes include points such as "please remove the comma from this sentence...[quote]" (as you did for talk:Gettysburg Cyclorama. Why do the reviewers not just save copy/paste time and space and make such a tiny edit themselves? I figure there must be a reason, such I assume wiki editors who have volunteered to review articles have an interest in improving the content. Thanks :) TheHYPO (talk) 23:05, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Gun violence in the United States edit

I initially found it strange that you decided to review this article, because I had already reviewed it in the last October. However I noticed that it was listed in two sections: in 'Culture and society/Cultural and social studies' and in 'Law/Crime, criminals, punishment and victims'. So it is necessary now to decide where this article belongs to. Ruslik (talk) 10:06, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The article has been already removed from 'Culture and society/Cultural and social studies', so it is not necessary to decide anything (I look into the old version of the list, where it was indeed in two sections). Ruslik (talk) 10:09, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

GA - fair trade edit

Hello Nehrams2020, Thanks for your assessment of the article fair trade - the issues you pointed out definitely need to be fixed and since I wrote a large part of the article, I understand it is probably my duty to do so. I guess I will resubmit the article for GA review when I do have time to address them sometime in August. Thanks though Vincentl (talk) 23:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wonder Woman edit

Hello, I was wondering if I could make a request of you regarding admin tools. There was a live-action film under development for Wonder Woman, and an article was started at Wonder Woman (film). It was eventually redirected to the superheroine's article. Now the redirect has been resurrected as a Wonder Woman animated film, still containing the page history of the live-action film article. (There is a similar combination of revisions on Talk:Wonder Woman (film), where we had some discussion.) I was wondering if you could move all pre-March 27, 2008 revisions on the mainspace to Wonder Woman (2009 film) and all pre-June 23, 2008 revisions on the talkspace to Talk:Wonder Woman (2009 film). I would then treat the 2009-marked articles as redirects to the superheroine's article like before. The animated film, being certain to come out, will have "ownership" of Wonder Woman (film) for the time being, since we cannot be sure there will be a live-action film in production down the road. If there is one, then the revisions would already be separated per GFDL standards and grow separately. I tried to make this request of Gwen Gale, but she did not seem to want to do so. I don't think it's that controversial of a move; per naming conventions and WP:NFF, there is technically no other film besides the animated Wonder Woman film being made, and I'm just using (2009 film) as a placeholder (per IMDb). Would you be able to split the page history like this? —Erik (talkcontrib) - 12:29, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, it seems OK now. I think we need to adjust the talk pages next. There is Talk:Wonder Woman (film)/Archive 1 that could be moved to Talk:Wonder Woman (2009 film)/Archive 1. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 21:09, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think that the former can be moved to the latter. However, it is just a copy-and-paste archive. On Talk:Wonder Woman (film), you could move pre-June 23, 2008 revisions to Talk:Wonder Woman (2009 film). Hope you're not struggling too much with this! —Erik (talkcontrib) - 21:20, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much! It looks like everything is in order. If the years or the titles change for either film, they can be readjusted separately. Appreciate you taking the time to do this! —Erik (talkcontrib) - 21:35, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:HAU, Status, and you! edit

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible) system - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 22:41, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Upcoming newsletter edit

Hello, I was wondering if it would be permissible to mention a couple of discussions in the upcoming newsletter. I wanted to mention the new "Release" section (under which there are "Theatrical" and "Home media" sections) and the new "Critical reception" section that have been implemented in MOS:FILM. I also wanted to see if the discussion about non-free images (at WT:MOSFILM#Non-free images) could also be mentioned since this is something that would probably affect the WikiProjec on a larger scale. Is this doable by whatever standards you may have with the newsletter? :) Please let me know! —Erik (talkcontrib) - 16:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Awesome! You're the first person I know to have gone to Comic-Con. Is it easy to get access? I heard great things about Wolfman, though I'm holding my breath a little about The Spirit. Was the screening related to Comic-Con or just a separate deal? No wonder I've seen you editing the film's article! :) —Erik (talkcontrib) - 22:14, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry, you're not getting back to me late! It was a pretty average response time, actually. :) It's really cool that you got to see all these stars and all these panels. Pictures would be great additions to the respective articles. If you ever desire to work on The Spirit, let me know... I really haven't updated the article in a while, and I know that I have a ton of Google Alerts for the film. (Not to mention that the always-useful Comics2Film will have an archive of links, too!) What did you think of Death Race and Hamlet 2, anyway? I've heard that the latter is supposed to be really funny (Rock Me Sexy Jesus?) while Death Race is typical Paul W.S. Anderson. —Erik (talkcontrib) - 11:54, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I definitely get them weekly... I have a little too many to handle daily. I used to have them be sent to my primary Gmail account, but it was too overwhelming. I've since shifted them to an alternative Gmail account solely for receiving film headlines. I try to set up the keywords like "tropic thunder" "ben stiller" and choose "News" instead of "Web" or "Both". It does seem that Google Alerts doesn't deliver everything, though... have you noticed that? —Erik (talkcontrib) - 20:25, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism Tags edit

Hey, I took a look at what you said about my IP being flagged for vandalism. If you look at the header you'll see it's because we run through a proxy at work. I haven't actually edited any of the articles they're talking about. -D --76.122.153.196 (talk) 23:23, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kill bill vol one ver.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Kill bill vol one ver.jpg.

Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:03, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

GA mentorship edit

Hi. I'm going to be reviewing this article for GA, and since I'm new, I went to the mentor list and I noticed you had lots of TV/Film etc. GAs, so I'm going to ask you at the end of the process for an opinion. Just a heads up. Pie is good (Apple is the best) 01:56, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong edit

I have made substantial additions to the above article, and have the following to ask of you:

  • How does one go about finding web archives of the articles which no longer exist to replace dead links?
  • What did you mean by "update all of the access dates"? Do you mean that we should put more recent dates for working links?
  • Could you go over the article as it is now and review it per GA criteria?

Thanks, Ohconfucius (talk) 07:36, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
