Deletion of talk pages
Hi! When deleting files which have been moved to Commons, note that WP:CSD#G8 states that the talk page is not to be deleted. Therefore, File talk:35 Dead Trees copy.jpg (and others) shouldn't have been deleted. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:57, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
- Are you sure? WP:F8 says nothing about keeping a file talk page after the file is deleted, and the G8 wording is confusing; it implies that the en-WP version of Commons files should be kept also (in which case we wouldn't have that F8 backlog :-). - I agree it's a bit confusing.
- Images which are available on Commons should be deleted under F8 (not G8).
- If there is a textual file information page but no file, then the file information page qualifies for deletion under G8. However, the file information page should not be deleted under G8 if there is a file on Commons with the same name. In that situation, F2 should be used instead. Local file information pages should not be deleted at all if they contain a couple of templates such as {{Featured picture}} - see WP:CSD#F2 and WP:CSD#F8. When WP:CSD#G8 talks about 'image pages' for files on Commons, the section probably means that you should use F2 or F8 instead, if one of those applies. However, the wording is unclear.
- It says that 'image pages or talk pages for images that exist on Wikimedia Commons' so the restriction applies to both 'image pages' and to 'talk pages'.
- Also note that {{Now Commons}} contains a big warning telling that the talk page is not to be deleted if there is a talk page. This warning message is only shown if the name on Commons is different to the name on Wikipedia, though. Compare File:Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite - 2012 reproduction.jpg (different name on Commons) with File:A Male Tiger barb.png (same name on Commons). --Stefan2 (talk) 21:32, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanations, and I'm glad we agree that the G8 wording is unclear :-). I knew about keeping file information pages with the featured-picture tag, but F2 seems to be more of a fixing-a-mistake criterion and the warning on {{Now Commons}} applies to files which shouldn't have been moved. Leading a lap means he crossed the start/finish line first on a particular lap, while the "lead lap" refers to the driver being on the same lap as the leader (i.e. the leader has not lapped him). Is there anything you want me to do before removing the hidden notes? Also, if you have any other questions, feel free to let me know and I'll do my best to answer. The mailing list works in the usual way, and the address to which new mailing list threads can be sent is clerks-l
lists.wikimedia.org. Useful reading for new clerks is the procedures page, WP:AC/C/P, but you will learn all the basic components of clerking on-the-job.
New clerks begin as a trainee, are listed as such at WP:AC/C#Personnel, and will remain so until they have learned all the aspects of the job. When you've finished training, which usually takes a couple of/a few months, then we'll propose to the Committee that you be made a full clerk. As a clerk, you'll need to check your e-mail regularly, as the mailing list is where the clerks co-ordinate (on-wiki co-ordination page also exists but is not used nearly as much). If you've any questions at any point of your traineeship, simply post to the mailing list.
Lastly, it might be useful if you enter your timezone into WP:AC/C#Personnel (in the same format as the other members have), so that we can estimate when we will have clerks available each day; this is, of course, at your discretion. WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 5
Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:
In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.
Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.
Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.
There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.
The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.
