Hello, from the Portals WikiProject...

You are invited to join the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system...

The Portals WikiProject was rebooted on April 17th, and is going strong. Fifty-nine editors have joined so far, with more joining daily.

We're having a blast, and excitement is high...

Our goal is to update, upgrade, and maintain portals.

In addition to working directly on portals, we are developing tools to make portals more dynamic (self-updating), and to make building and maintaining portals easier. We've finished two tools so far, with more to come. They are Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Discussions are underway about how to further upgrade portals, and what the portals of the future will be.

There are plenty of tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too).

With more to come.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

Help referencing a Japanese bio?

I'm having a really hard time with someone who ought to have more sources. Any suggestions on referencing Draft:Hiroko Hori? My best item so far is a partial page from a Japanese magazine snapped with my cell phone while I was at a bookstore, thinking I could just look her up later. But no. Wow, Bri! She seems very notable. Doing what usually works with foreign-languages for me, image search by her anglophone name and by characters brings up what look like features in Japanese media. However, I can't properly evaluate the sources. I don't know anyone fluent in Japanese, but maybe we can try at WP:WikiProject Japan? @Hienafant: Thanks for translating! I have to admit, I find the ending lacking, too, but I'm still digging for information about how it ended that's definitive. Sources are lacking for information about the anti-suffrage movement. Sue, I think the problem is that it says "After the 19th Amendment passed, the NYSAOWS", i.e. in mid-sentence. What I find in this on page 1094, is that the group disbanded in 1917 soon after New York State approved women's suffrage via referendum and President Woodrow Wilson announced his support for the 19th Amendment. (I didn't add that, as I was not sure that was where you were going with it.) SusunW (talk) 15:26, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Citing Newspapers.com

Hi Megalibrarygirl, I hope you are well! Do you know the best way to cite an article from newspapers.com if the article is on multiple pages and requires several individual clippings? LOL I think we all know, I am just not remotely technical. Someone from Village Pump taught me when I was trying to figure out how to post a PDF chapter I had found from a book. The Google books view was only partial, but the PDF had the full text. So...he said to cite the PDF as a web page, join it with the words contained in and cite the book. As an aside, he then said I could do the same thing with multiple pages from newspapers.com by joining with and. You know me, anal about proper citations ;) SusunW (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

Edith Philips

Hey one other different question! I am working on an article on Edith Philps [3][4][5][6][7] and am not sure if she is still living. Thsmi002 [8] line 56 says she was born on 3 November 1892 in Boston, which confirms the date and place of the Guggenheim website. The death record shows that Edith born on that same date died in Chester, Pennsylvania [9], which is the same place her father was living per his obit. Dr. Frances Gertrude McGill

Hi again, Megalibrarygirl! I'm working on expanding the article for Frances Gertrude McGill this month, and I wondered if you could help me find some extra material about her, especially concerning her date of birth. Some sources tell me she was born 1877, while others say 1882. She was a pioneering Canadian forensic pathologist/criminologist. She died on January 21, 1959, and I think the Winnipeg Free Press published an obituary for her on January 22, 1959, but I'm having trouble accessing their archival issues. I'll circle back to this tomorrow. Her parents died in 1900 from drinking contaminated water at the fair? [12] Maybe finding the story will give names for them? (Looks like the 1882 date comes from an encyclopedia of Saskatchewan, but all other sources I find show 1877) If we can find their names will be easier to find her birthdate. @SusunW: I had a look at the Manitoba Vital Statistics site [13], and I found an online birth record for a Frances Gertrude McGill from Minnedosa that says she was born November 18, 1882. It lists her mother as "Henrietta Wigmore", but doesn't list her father. I also just emailed the author of that Star Phoenix article to ask if he could point me to any good sources, and he said he used 'The Pathological Casebook of Dr. Frances McGill' by Myrna Petersen, which I'm going to see if I can get ahold of... I almost always try to verify historic birth and death info and always have difficulty for Canada. That is a great tool you found. SusunW Ooh -- I like the look of that archive.org site for books! I may just make an account. :-) Most Canadian provinces do have similar historical vital stats sites, although the functionality differs a little from place to place: Nova Scotia [15], New Brunswick [16], Prince Edward Island [17], British Columbia [18], Alberta [19] and Saskatchewan [20]. As far as I know, the other provinces and the three territories don't have much online. Overall though -- I'd definitely say they're a handy tool for biographies. If you find any other "FREE" source collections in Canada, please add them. It is a difficult place to research for me. I am not sure if it is because I am blocked (because I am in Mexico), if the archives are predominantly in private holdings, or if like the Caribbean and Latin America not much is digitized. • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

• Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

• A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

• There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

• Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

• The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
• Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

• A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

• Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.

The attribution for Women's liberation movement and the subsequent new articles (Women's liberation movement in Europe, Women's liberation movement in Australia) was lost in yesterday's cut/pastes. I'm not sure if it was preserved for Women's liberation movement in North America and Women's liberation movement in Asia because the edit summary of the article with the cut doesn't exactly match with what's in WP:SPLIT. These are the "magic" words:

Contents [[WP:SPLIT]] from [[Source article name]]

Material [[WP:SPLIT]] to [[New article name]]

The thing is, I'm not sure if the wording has to be exact on both articles in order to assure attribution. I've done a bunch of these but can't remember article names in order to check on how their edit histories end up looking. I didn't want to mess with the mistakes I'd made before I saw your post since they'd been edited quite a bit before I knew there was a thing called WP:SPLIT, Rosiestep. I knew I had to attribute the info as coming from the correct article, but I wasn't aware of SPLIT. I'm glad you pointed it out to me. Also, for Australia, I figured that a normal attribution of copying material would be OK since I wasn't creating a new article, but adding to an existing one (renamed). • As far as I know we're both picky and not picky. That is, attribution is required but there is a variety of ways in which we can attribute. The best, in my opinion, is the very first edit summary of the split, but the exact wording isn't mandated (mind you, I'm freewheeling here, not looking up policy right now). If that is combined with a template on the talk page, we're good. Megalibrarygirl, "moved from Women's liberation movement" is...well, it wasn't really moved, it was split off, right? Cause I see that in two articles already. "Split from..." as indicated above is better, yes. OK I see you did that with the two others, good. You can add something like "see that article's history for attribution"; I've seen people do that and it's helpful if an unseasoned Wikipedia editor looks at the history, an editor who doesn't know what "split" is and can't or does't click on the link. Ha, OK, I found the appropriate template: Template:Split article is appropriate here. Put that on the talk page and you will have met all the requirements, as far as I can tell (and I'm sure someone will follow up if I got it wrong, haha). Drmies (talk) 21:44, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

OMG, I think we are finally down to the UK. I have evaluated all of the European countries for which I can find information. This has been a much bigger task than I originally thought as it is clear that there has been so much revisionist writing on feminists in general, i.e. attempts to make Liberationists palatable, as well as misunderstanding of what they were trying to achieve. Ian took the banner off the main article saying that it hadn't been edited in several days, but my problem with that was that I was trying to complete Europe before I summarized their activities. So...I wrote a summary. Will still need to add England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales into the summary, but at least I think I gave a fairly comprehensive picture. Any chance you can read through the main article and Europe to make sure there are no glaring issues? I think I removed all the information about reforming laws (not liberationist activity), abortion successes (there weren't any except Denmark from a Liberationist perspective as all were compromise reforms, not removing all bans entirely) and got rid of politically aligned groups that were not liberationist. I'd like to finish the last four countries by the end of the month, but I seem to only be able to manage one country per day. Hi, I have a question regarding a female entry which is being considered for deletion :

Although the sources are from fashion magazines and news media, they are being referred to as press releases. Since the subject is a model and fashion blogger, the best sources are fashion magazines such as Vogue, yet the written style of these magazines is being called into question. Since this is an industry that mostly touches women, maybe you have some suggestions. Furthermore, the subject is a celebrity within Serbia and sources from local news media have been quoted. Abonzz This is a tactic used often that I can never receive a satisfactory answer on: the person challenging the article claims that RS are "press releases." When pressed, they'll say that the articles in the RS are based very heavily on press releases. If they are challenged as to how they know this, they won't answer. It's very frustrating. I'd accept this line of argument if someone presented an analysis of the press release they claim the article is based on and the article itself. They never have that info. Aliza Shvarts / Yale Student Abortion Art Controversy

Hi! Given your interest in countering systemic bias on Wikipedia, I thought an ongoing discussion on the Yale Student Abortion Art Controversy page might be of interest to you. As you know, women who emerge onto the public sphere as "scandalous" (especially in relation to issues around sexual harassment, gender-based abuse, or reproductive issues) are oftentimes forever defined by the scandals surrounding them. At present, this Wikipedia page conflates the controversy, artist, and artwork, with a bias toward the controversy's notability over the artist and artwork's. If you get discouraged by the deletionist tendencies at AfD, I have Chelo Silva, significantly influential within her culture, who is overdue for an article. I probably won't get around to this topic for some time, but she is discussed in depth in the sources I am using on my current projects, Draft:Falcon Records (Texas) and Draft:Ideal Records, which should be deterrent enough for the GNG slaves, if you or a WP:WIR talk page stalker want to have a go at it. Sources? I can always use sources on record labels. If you have anything on Falcon, Ideal, or Bejo (see my Sundries working area) that isn't currently listed in either the "References" section, or at the end of the article (the "messy" part), then yes I'd be interested. What may be available, and what I'd love to find but which I can't really see is discussions of these labels as discussed in academic journals, if any. There may be an article in the ARSC Journal, perhaps from about 12 years ago, as these Tejano/noteño labels were one of the featured topics. Back to the original topic, I just found out this artist indeed does have an article, and I created a redirect accordingly. All the references I have refer to her as "Chelo Silva", so I think perhaps a page move would be in order. Nevertheless the article is unsourced, and does not signify the influence this woman had on tejano music. On the main article, I did something I haven't done in the past, but thought that rather than trying to summarize each different European country, I would group the types of actions they were involved in to show they were widespread. The biggest thing is just reading through the main article and making sure we didn't miss anything major. When I first wrote it, I reread it and realized I had forgotten Iceland. Shutting down the country is pretty major. LOL I am also not sure if we have enough links in the main article, but I have added a few. Realized yesterday we have pictures in the continental articles but not the main one. So, we need to try to add some photos but not duplicates. That's my worst area besides technology, but I shall see if I can find any. I talked with Montanabw about this one and she gave me some leads on who might do such an in-depth review for us because all 5 articles have to be nominated separately, but clearly we want the same reviewer. Since in effect this is the 50th anniversary of the movement (yes I get small things happened before, but 1968 was the watershed) I'd like to have it this year. Roger, can you help with this? If we're going for GA, then the images need to be fully acceptable. Susun: I don't think we need to be too fussy about the images. Some of the really good ones from the other articles could certainly be included in the main one. I'm not sure how many reviewers would be ready to assess the whole series.
