Biographical encyclopedias

Hi! Do you know of any biographical encyclopedias that would list British officials in Africa in the late 1800 to early 1900? The person in question, Elphinstone Dayrell, was also a folklorist (Folk Stories from Southern Nigeria) and Anthropologist (Nsibidi). I checked the British encyclopedia listed on the free pages, but nothing. Thank you Aurornisxui (talk) 05:29, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for looking, I've done a pretty thorough search and there isn't much out there, one source even said the same. But he was a colonial official in Nigeria and Andrew Lang wrote the introduction to his folk tales book, so I was hoping there was some resource that had either British colonial officers or Anthropologists of the early 1900s. No problem, Aurornisxui. I just found something on JSTOR that said: "there is little biographical information on the author, Elphinstone Dayrell." The info the article does have is that Dayrell was a district commissioner of Southern Nigeria. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:11, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Timeline of women in computing

Could you explain how these edits comply with WP:FLAGCRUFT, especially where the women work in non-state entities such as the Harvard computers? CaradhrasAiguo (leave language) 02:08, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

I think it looks nice and it helps me to keep things in perspective. I need to make sure there's a world emphasis on the timeline and non-state entities still are situated in countries. Apologies for forgetting to add the customary 4 ~. The problem with adding flags to entries like Johanna Piesch is potential a-historical usage. In that instance, her publication was in 1939, after the Anschluss, so that raises the question as what she identified as at the time. Also, for instance, it is not cited anywhere on WP that Zhang Lixia in 1986 was already naturalized, barely 5 years after earning a masters at CSU Los Angeles, which barely seems enough time to earn a green card. I see your point, CaradhrasAiguo. I've been thinking about it for sure! I decided to add them after working on another timeline that included them. The thing I liked about Timeline of women in photography is that it helps the reader see the nationality of the person at a glance. That was very appealing to me because it's important to me to show the full scope of those involved in something. I'm trying to include global contributions as much as possible. Question: would you be interested in editing Timeline of women in computing to show the nationality of the women and remove the flags? Such as: "German computer scientist..."
