There are other factors as well; some users don't like being welcomed (surprising to me at first, but then I realized I wouldn't really have appreciated a welcome template, either), and given that there is already a welcome-template-esque page after registration, much of the material is duplicated. Also, because most registered accounts never edit, some people believe that welcoming users who haven't edited yet is a waste of server resources, which is one reason we don't have automatic or bot welcoming place right now. I would say that some sort of auto-welcome trial would be nice to see if it actually improves editing rates for new users, but I guess the performance issues make that unlikely. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 22:57, 4 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Doc Hastings edit

I don't really understand why you would consider this sentence non-neutral: Hastings is one of the most pro-business pro-jobs representatives in the Congress, according to the United States Chamber of Commerce which gives Hastings a score of 94 out of 100 based on his 16-year voting record. [1]

While this sentence would be considered neutral: The United States Chamber of Commerce gives Hastings a score of 94 out of 100 based on his 16-year voting record. [2]

Without the introductory phrase, the rating from the United States Chamber of Commerce is meaningless. Is the 94 out of 100 for his work in basketweaving? His excellence in facial hair? Obviously it's not a neutral statement in that it reports the point of view of the USCoC. However, that viewpoint is posted in a neutral way without a long explanation of what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is trying to rate.

Notice that other paragraphs in the same section also start with brief introductory explanations:

Hastings has strong pro-life views on abortion issues..... Hastings rates low with some union groups

For anyone truly interested they could open up the reference to see Hastings is something like #4 or 5 in the Congress for lifetime rating from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. But I thought that might be too much detail (and subject to fluctuation based on a single vote) for a good Wikipedia entry.

I still feel like the Hastings interest group ratings page is not consistently written. Some of the positive interest group ratings he has received from "Conservative" groups contain an interpretative sentence (i.e. "is one of the most business-friendly representatives"), while the ratings listed by "Liberal" groups simply state the rating without interpretation (i.e. only says "rates low with some union groups"). I think this section needs to be rewritten for consistency --- either all ratings should contain an interpretative comment, or none of them should. leftcider (talk) 19 July 2011

I didn't realize I needed to use four tildas to sign notes and edits on discussion pages. I had made some edits to Wikipedia many years ago under another username, but no longer have that password. A friend of mine offline is also a Wikipedia administrator, so I decided to join the community and add my body of knowledge as well. Thanks for your welcome. I think La Grange was my first edit. I recently met someone from there and became interested in the town. I saw that tagging and so decided to make it less offensive. I, too, live in a town with the village form of government and am politically active so I was sensitive to the issue. I felt bad about reducing the size of the paragraph but was very glad to see that you found the edit to be favorable. Were you from La Grange? Hoping to be able to remove more taggings in the future by being a good editor!

Campaign finance edit

Hi,

yes I am the one who worked on the Campaign finance page. The subject has been my professional concern for about 30 years and it is still strange for me that the U.S. discussion about "money in politics" stays fixed on "campaigns". For the rest of the universe (among others Canada, Latin America and Europe) "campaign and party" are tied together. Therefore I have offered an new page on "Political finance" which includes both aspects and should give a broader perspective of the subject. My draft page has been added to the backlog of additional new pages. I wonder if you can do anything about it.

Hi Meelar, you have hit upon a very good point. For the time being we could drop "policies" because the literature (except Herb Alexanders regular studies "Financing the ... election") does not touch upon issue campaigns for referendums or ballot issues.

My intention was to demonstrate to American users that campaign does not necessarily mean "candidate campaign" because parties (especially in non-U.S. democracies) do run heavy campaign costs and the umbrella "yes" and "no" campaign organizations for all ballot questions (referendums) spend lots of money, too. I was not thinking of more general public opinion campaigns that are not directly related to a voting procedure.

Michael Pinto-Duschinsky has many times argued in favor of a more broadly defined term of "political finance". Unfortunately I don't know whether this has been in his writings, too, or just in various discussions, which I have had with him. British and Canadian legislation has taken up the election related part of the issue (spending of interested money during the official campaign period) under the heading of "third party advertising". There is some similarity to the "independent expenditures" of U.S. campaigns, However, in Canada and the U.K. such expenses are limited by law. Hi, I missed your point about the heading of the article. Yes, I think that the heading "Camapign finance" (and the text that follws the the more generalizied introduction) has a massive U.S. bias. The rest of the world would look for "party and campaign finance" or "campaign and party finance". The international literature has opted for the more comprehensive term "political finance" long ago (Heidenheimer 1970). Therefore I have offered a stub article under this heading. It certainly needs enlargement and I am willling to contribute. Renaming or re-writing the "campaign finance" article is a task that I would not dare to undertake. National Archives ExtravaSCANza edit

Proposed revamp of Lobbying in the United States edit

I have a tentative draft in this sandbox. I'll probably swap it into the Lobbying in the United States article in a day or so after I fix it up a bit; it needs pictures or graphics possibly plus some repairs to references and could be condensed perhaps. I did come across some references to "K Street" but not as many as I had found earlier so I'm still not too sure whether it's worth it to expand the K-Street -- lobbying place article too. Hi, please note that I've reverted your edits to Dick Durbin, because I believe your edit deletion of my edit hides a significant aspect of how Durbin entered public life, shows why the previous office-holder was opposed, shows possible motivations for Durbin entering public life, exposes who his main supporters were, and hence, shining a light on how he decides public policy. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries edit

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition edit

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.

Actually, that was me--I didn't realize I wasn't logged in until I saved halfway through writing the stub article. An exciting month of wiki events! edit

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Extended confirmed protection edit

Hello, Meelar. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers edit

Hi Meelar.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) edit

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
