NPWatcher Request

Hi! I was just wondering if I could get approval for NPWatcher. I know it says you must have 300 edits, but, does that mean mainspace? I only have half of that. But, I do Newpages patrol a lot, and most of the User Talk edits are for users that people have placed a {{db}} or similar tag. I think that if I get NPWatcher, I can build my experience with dealing with issues, and more newpages that violate any rule will be taken off.

Bot

Can I ask a favour? There's some discussion over at Wikipedia_talk:Featured_article_candidates#Multi_FA_template (mostly provoked by me) about a bot to carry out FA status updating. Could you cast your eye over the proposal (near the bottom) to check that it is technically possible? I know it should be possible, but I've purposedly stayed away from bot writing, so I don't know the system limitations and permissions required - I can't see it would need admin privs but I might have missed something. Removal of coatofarms

Howdy - I noticed that your bot MartinBotIII is removing the coatofarms tag from images, leaving many of them with no copyright tag at all. For those images left with no copyright tag, it seems to me that your bot should also be adding {{nld}} and notifying the uploader. Otherwise someone else will have to go through and check all the images that your bot edited. Of course, there could be a very good reason for not doing this that I'm not aware of :-) -SCEhardT 21:17, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Hrm, well it looks like OrphanBot is currently tagging coatofarms images with nld while leaving the coatofarms tag also. If you two could coordinate it would cut the overall number of edits in half. I'll let Carnildo know also. -SCEhardT 22:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

NPWatcher suggestions

Thanks for enabling me, Martin. I've tried the software and I have a few suggestions already. On the Maintenance tab, I'd suggest {{Uncategorized}} as an additional option. Also, instead of the button arrangement that only allows you to insert one tag per page, how about having checkboxes so that, if necessary, a user could place more than one maintenance notice at the same time? --Russ (talk) 21:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi,

You raised an imprtant issue on my talk page. I replied there, but I will repeat my reply here, to make sure you see it.

Voting on matters on which one is incompetent is certanly NOT voting in good faith. Such users and such attitudes should be discouraged. Such behaviour patterns drive away highly qualified editors and lower the quality of the information on WP. Addressing distortions during mediation?

Isarig's statement has made several outright distortions of my position as well as of the issues at stake. I am tempted to address them one by one on the mediation page but I do not think that will be productive. Should I just wait until all have said what they have to say and then list the distortions? Or wait until you summarize each position and then only address those distortions actually relevant to the contested issues? Some of his comments (e.g. charges related to the Valerie Plame article) seem totally unrelated to the issue at hand and while I feel the need to address them for the purpose of truth, I don't see how that will help the mediation process. Evening Martin, first of all thanks for agreeing to take this on. I'm not necessarily looking for adminship at the moment. Not sure if you read my reply on Fang Aili's page, so here you go gratuitous cut n paste alert. I recently self nominated for an RFA as I believed it would aid my work looking after the WikiProject on user warnings. I withdrew my nomination after a couple of opposes came in and my thoughts can be seen on my talk page. Having sat back and thought about it, I didn't remove my name from the coaching as I think that this can aid me in gaining a greater understanding in policy and practice, and does not necessarily require someone to have the mop n bucket as the end goal. About me, been here in one form or another for nigh on two years, first logged in edits were exactly a year ago today! I've around 4,000 edits mainly in RC patrolling, equiped with most of the vandal tools. About 2 months back I took over the WP:UW project as it had stalled and with one other editor have got it to a position now where we are a month or so away from overhauling all warning templates. What do I want...... not sure to be honest, wikipedia for all it's good points isn't the most intuitive of websites, and it can take quite a while to find pertinant policies on vandalism, who's doing what, who looks after waht etc. So I think I'd like to pick your brains for the secret squirrel stuff. Department Store Vandal

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll get on it right away. By the way, I myself have pretty much no knowledge of this subject either, I've never even shopped at a Lord & Taylor in my life (though I think I walked through the store that used to be in Manchester, Connecticut on the way to the mall once...) It is due to this fact that I insisted to the other editors working on the article to dig up citations to differentiate the fact from the fiction on the page. Jared Colinger's Page

To a degree I understand your position, but I also disagree - notability is definately an issue up for debate. I listed Jared's releases, compilation appearances and a short bio - all of which would be considered notable by his fans and related groups. He has a strong following with the west coast independent music scene, as well as being a major contributor to his original home town in TN - therefore I think deleting the page for not being 'notable' was a mistake. According for the notability guidelines for the inclusion of bands, which is a touchy subject to begin with, the Jared Colinger page did meet me basic requirements - and even if that is in dispute, according to the guidelines page that does not create a basis for a speedy deletion, it should have followed the standard articles of deletion process. I hope you have not made a mistake giving the above the New Page gizmos. He speedily deleted a stub I had started on the highly notable Master of the Playing Cards (now redone) within about 3 minutes of my first edit. His reasons for doing so escape me completely - any cursory check would have shown many redlinks for this artist, who has his own Commons category etc. Incidentally he left an automated message on my talk page which did not begin a new section.

Looking at the surviving articles from his contributions, his ability to assess notability would appear to be unacceptably poor - look at Rede Lecture!!

Please monitor his usage of his new toys carefully!

more on the Cole mediation

Well, I made the change that Isarig appeared to agree to, and he quickly reverted it, claiming it was "mere name-calling." I don't think it is any more name-calling than the original charge by Karsh that Cole is responding to (you can see Isarig's revert here). I did not revert his revert, but I am concerned about the situation. Because I am the one who initiated mediation and because I am trying to be reasonable about the process, I feel as if my side of the mediation is being punished -- Armon reverts when the page enters mediation, I make a good faith edit to restore it to its pre-mediation state, based on Isarig's own statements in mediation, and he quickly reverts again without any attempt to respect the process of mediation. Frankly, I've been tempted to abandon Wikipedia completely as a result of my interaction with these two users -- I've been here for two years roughly and have had other sour interactions with individuals I don't agree with, but never have I felt this way about the project. It appears that a few organized users can easily take over any page they want, in this case turning what should be a biography of a notable individual into a scurrilous hatchet-job. My attempts to interact with these users are often met with ridicule and the debates degenerate into schoolyard taunting and bullying (look at the recent interaction I had with Isarig over an otherwise totally noncontroversial point that I made over at this page). RefDeskBot mixup

Hi, RefDeskBot archived 2006 December 30 pages to 2007 December 30. I manually moved the pages, except the Computing and Language pages which I had moved with cut-and-paste, thinking the pages hadn't been archived at all.

Another thing is the "The page you are currently viewing is {{#ifexist:Wikipedia:Reference desk/Archives/Computing/2008 January 9|an archive page|a [[Wikipedia:Transclusion|transcluded]] archive page}}." message; it used 2008 instead of 2007.

Hi, glad to hear the code works. Unfortunately there still seems to be bugs with the actual implementation of the image deletion buttons as of version 0.8.5.0. I just deleted a number of "no license" images using NPWatcher, and none of them where automaticaly de-linked. In fact nothing visibly happened at all, previous versions have reloaded the page after deleting something, now nothing happens. Had to manualy reload the page to see that it had even been deleted (it had), but file links where still present, no fancy image syntax that should have tripped up the removal code either [7] [8] [9]. --Sherool (talk) 14:56, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Verison 0.8.5.1 seems to work much better. There are still some issues with lowercase first letters though, MediaWiki will tolerate links like [[image:new image.jpg]] even though strictly speaking it should be [[Image:New image.jpg]] (case of first letter (and only first letter) in namespace and page name are optional). When I use WP:AWB to replace images I tend to use regex patterns like [Ii]mage:[Nn]ew[_ ]image.jpg to catch all possible permutations of the image name, dunno if that's any help. --Sherool (talk) 21:13, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Undelete!

Sorry to bug you, but a while back, about everything I did (creating pages and adding images relating to Trainz) got deleted. This was my fault, because I indeed did things on purpose, such as blanking the TRS2006 page and adding a delete template, and adding things like "i stole this from auran without permission" on the image pages just to get them deleted. Well, I was very upset about something at the time, and I was wondering if you could undelete the images and articles I made? I'm sorry, I'll make sure not to let stuff get to me that bad again. Mass-untagging of images.

Greetings Martin.

During the middle of December, you removed the tag {{coatofarms}} from a very large number of images following a debate on TFD, however people on WP:HV don't normally frequent TFD debates, so it looks like this debate wasn't noticed at all by the people editing the affected articles. Since finding coats of arms images is often somewhat complicated given that many of them are no longer in active use or because we have to look for old images, it would have been a nice gesture if you'd notified WP:HV about what you were about to do or at least made a list of the affected images afterwards, so we would have at least a possibility of assessing the situation and analysing the affected images. As I am writing this, Orphanbot is running amok on the heraldic material and this will result in tons of extra work for us. E.g. official German heraldry is PD by law, but this is getting removed along with the rest. Other insignia come from a 100 year old Swedish encyclopedia, just to name two examples.

I am aware that you are doing a lot of work on TFD, but next time, please warn any affected project before untagging hundreds of images. Somebody has redirected the affected template to {{Logo}} which is not entirely inaccurate, although {{symbol}} would be probably be better in 90% of all cases. These images are generally used under a fair use claim since not only copyrights but also other legal concerns have to be taken into account when it comes to government symbols. Given that a new TFD debate seems to be about to delete the {{Insignia}} warning as well, I don't see any other option than to reclassify many images from PD-old to fairuse to warn people about potential legal for unauthorized use. I found the deletion debate in the TFD archive and if editors found this template so inadequate, I find it very odd that noone chose to inform WP:HV about such concerns. That was indeed an option, but with the luck WP:HV is having at the moment, a third bot will probably come along and delete the images altogether. coatofarms tag

I'm spending a lot of valuable editing time adding the {{seal}} tag to images from which your bot has removed the deprecated {{coatofarms}}, without replacing it with anything. I'm trying to keep up with them as Orphanbot finds them, but some are getting deleted as having no tag (which they dis when they were uploaded). Thanks a lot for your prompt reply, glad your around. It's bedtime now, but I'll set up a new page Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/MartinBotII tomorrow where I'll give full details of the proposed algorithm, along with what we used before. A key aspect of the whole thing (IMHO) is how we rank the importance of an article. The plan is to make it dependent on (a) the intrinsic importance of the article (see below) as far as we can judge that, and (b) the importance rating given by a WikiProject and (c) the importance rank of that WikiProject (could be contentious, but I have some parameters to judge it).

(Inserted later): The idea described below was something I wanted you to mull over while I worked on getting the new page written up. As usual, I'm trying to think 7 steps ahead of where we are now, I hope I'm not confusing you! So the part below is not urgent, though I'd like your feedback on it at some point. The main thing I'd like you to look at is the new page describing the proposal, at Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/MartinBotII. Thanks! Walkerma 07:28, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

In the meantime, there's something I wanted to raise. In discussions at Wikimania (with mav, I think) we talked about ranking the importance of an article by looking at how many other articles (i.e., mainspace only) link to it. I'm not a fan of using this as the sole criterion - for example Picasso scores only 269, whereas Star Wars gets 3381, and Jean-Luc Picard gets about twice the number achieved by Dominique de Villepin, PM of France. Nevertheless, it would be more objective than most other criteria we have available. Is it easy for you to incorporate this into the bot's script? There would be two ways of doing it, as far as I can see:

• Just a simple number - 346 articles link to this article.
• A more complex algorithm that would factor in the importance of those 346 articles, perhaps via iteration. I imagine a first run that ignores this factor, then later runs phase it in gradually. You would have the bot read a table called (say) ImportanceOld that contains the full listing of importance numbers generated on the previous run, and use that in generating ImportanceNew; at the beginning of the next run the bot would copy ImportanceNew over ImportanceOld.

I'm assuming that the first is easy, and the second much more challenging. If the second could be done, even if it required a fair bit of work, it might be worth the effort, because

1. It would be much less contentious than ranking WikiProjects (people from WikiProject:Obscure Sci-fi TV show get upset if we judge (subjectively) that their project ranks lower than WikiProject:Chemistry).
2. It reduces the Villepin/Picard problem outlined above - Villepin would be cited in top-importance articles such as France, whereas much of Picard's score might come from articles on specific Star Trek episodes that would rank quite low.

I am aware that doing all this would slow the bot down dramatically, but as we said before, a weekly run should suffice so hopefully it wouldn't be a problem. Is any of this feasible? Thanks, Walkerma 07:25, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Another NPWatcher 'feature'

Hi again. I used "Delete (nonsense) and warn" but it didn't do the warn. But it did when I clicked it with "Leave notability warning" checked, and left two warnings. You can see the result here [12]. I know, I did a little mistake there. It can't block users, but its concept is valuble, its an anti-troll bot, which reverts and detects comments from trolls on userpages, and reverts any use of bad language. Jamie White

I noticed that you speedily deleted Jamie White for non-notability (I also noticed that it was previously deleted as an uncontested {{PROD}}). I would like to ask you to restore all previous edits to this page, as I believe there should be no question as to her notability, at least in the Los Angeles area. I was looking for information on her recent firing when I noticed the article was gone. She had been a morning host on KYSR for quite some time, on the number 1 show in the area for at least a portion of that. At one time she co-hosted with Danny Bonaduce. Further, there are mainstream articles which reference her or her show, e.g. The Los Angeles Times, (another LA Times article), The Orange County Register, and E! Online. Thank you for restoring the original article, which I have now greatly improved. I was also wondering how Jamie could be simultaneously married to Tom Welling, while being engaged to the father of her baby son, until I figured out that these were two different people named Jamie White. I added a disambiguation sentence at the top to hopefully prevent future confusion. Hi - I'll be happy to send you some code - the main pile of code for MartinBotII is a mess - I'm porting it off into seperate sub projects now (all the tasks were in one file, then I realised how bad it really was). I've got the peer review task in a seperate project (and it works), so I'll tidy it up and send it you. If I have one issue with the framework - it's the number of page loads it makes - it logs in before every page fetch, and uses special:Export a lot, which leaves it very prone to Wikipedia errors (502 bad gateway is a frequent one now), so I've started to make my own framework just a class right now for the simpler stuff (page loading, saving, getting categories and finding the creator of a page), which uses Httprequests with shared cookies, so you don't need to log in every time (and uses query api to get page data, rather than special:Export). Hi,

I was just casually browsing Wikipedia on my work computer and a message came up saying that my IP address has been banned from editing pages. I wasn't trying to anyway but I was just wondering why you've done this? The reason cited is chronic vandalism and spam. Does that mean someone at my office has been messing about? NP Watcher adding messages incorrectly to user talk pages

When NP Watcher added speedy delete comments to a user's talk page, it is incorrectly formatting the header for the comment. There is a space before ==Image:blahblahblah listed for deletion==. This creates the text as preformatted text and does not insert it as a header thus is becomes just another comment under an existing header.

For an example, check out the my talk page. I have edited 20K Leagues Under the Sea - WDW.jpg to be correctly formatted. Directly below that is Big thunder wdw.jpg in the incorrect format.

Bees and drunkeness

Why are images that have uploaded being tagged as not meeting FU requirements, when this one Image:IronMaidenBand.jpg offers no better explanation than anything I have uploaded, is on a much more famous bands page so it is seen much more, has been there much longer, and yet has seemed to slip by untagged? --E tac 22:21, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
