Dear Prburley, that article, along with others which are related, was created by an user a few years ago. He started creating several articles there were nothing more than stubs and that would never grow larger than that. Per Wikipedia:Proposed mergers each merger proposal should start with a discussion--then the "proposed merge" tag. Hence the confusion here. I recommend leaving the articles as they are and removing the merger tags. Or, you could start an individual discussion for each proposed merger and re-post the proposed merger tag. Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 350 articles in just six days. Pernambuco foi a capitania/província mais rica do Brasil na primeira metade do século XIX, e Recife era a cidade mais importante economicamente e politicamente no Brasil durante todo o século XIX atrás apenas do Rio de Janeiro (por motivos óbvios). @Lecen:, o que mais me admira é a sua teimosia em manter no artigo aquele trecho sobre a população escrava, mesmo após a inserção de uma fonte absolutamente fidedigna (IBGE), que você desprestigia em favor de um historiador irrelevante mesmo sabendo que o IBGE constitui a principal fonte para historiadores em se tratando de estatísticas populacionais. E até pela lógica... a gente sabe que no Rio de Janeiro e na Bahia havia mesmo muitos escravos ociosos a espera de compradores, mas dizer que até o Rio Grande do Sul tinha mais escravos que Pernambuco, sendo que Pernambuco era o maior produtor de açúcar e algodão do Império? Titles of nobility

Hi Lecen. Hope you are well. Just out of curiosity, I would like to pick your brain. I came across this Palácio Burnay, which I see is named after the Henrique Burnay, 1.º conde de Burnay. What I find odd is being called "of Brunay", when Burnay is in fact the person's surname. Normally such titles are named after a region, such as Conde de Portela, Duque de blabla, etc. Would you have any idea why the complement of this guy's title is his own surname? Rui, is good to hear from you. The count you mentioned was a noble from Portugal, but it's safe to presume that nobility worked there and in Brazil essentially the same (except that in Brazil was not hereditary). People were granted noble titles according to deeds or places related to their deeds. Thus you have the Baron of Passagem, who made the passage of Humaitá during the Paraguayan War or the Duke of Caxias, named after the town in Maranhão he recaptured from rebels. There are curious cases such as the famous general Osório, who became Baron and later Marquis of Erval because he found a beautiful field of herbs ("Herval" in old Portuguese), during military maneuvers in his younger years, even though he became a noble not because of that, but because of his role as accomplished leader during the Paraguayan War. The last case are nobles who are given their last names. That occurred indeed. Remember the Viscount of Taunay? His surname was Taunay. It all depended of the emperor. "Manuel Marques de Sousa, Count of Porto Alegre (1804–1875) was an army officer, politician, abolitionist and monarchist of the Empire of Brazil. His military career began in the late 1810s, and he later joined the struggle for the Brazilian independence and fought in the Cisplatine War during the 1820s. When his native province of Rio Grande do Sul was engulfed in a major secessionist rebellion from 1835 until 1845, he distinguished himself by remaining loyal to his country.
