Short descriptions

Hello, I've noticed that many of your edits add short descriptions that are helpful, but some do not comply with the style guide. For articles with self-explanatory titles, no short description is needed. Since a short description always appears along with the title itself, it can be thought of as a subtitle, and not all things with titles need a subtitle.

Please check through Wikipedia:Short_description for a more thorough primer on some do's and don'ts. As I've said, the majority of your edits are good and improve wikipedia, but a few could avoid repetition and some SD|None's can be left alone.

The boilerplate warning apparently says "from Grand Hotel Dei Fiori" to another page", which is something I didn't realize until just now. Which, I mean that's not confusing or anything, right? For the avoidance of doubt, you translated the Italian version of the page into the English Wikipedia version- which is absolutely great, by the way. Just make sure you tell us when you're doing it, with a link to the original page! You've already seen a real-life example of why providing attribution is good for everybody, especially the translator. Yep, that part is what set off the automatic copypatrol detectors. Even if you write original prose, if you translate anything from another Wikipedia, you need to attribute it. But it can be tricky when nobody's shown you how to yet. There's a guide at WP:TFOLWP, but I remember being a bit confused by it while I started out. I'll write a step-by-step guide for you here:
1. Translate text from a foreign language Wikipedia.
2. Enter the translation into either a new English Wikipedia article or an existing English Wikipedia article.
3. Open up edit summary box.
4. Copy paste the text Content in this edit is translated from the existing (Insert Foreign Language) Wikipedia article at [[:2 :letter language code:Exact name of foreign Wikipedia article]]; see its history for attribution. into the edit summary
5. Swap out "Exact name of foreign language Wikipedia article" with the exact name of the foreign language Wikipedia article.
6. Swap out "2 letter language code" with the two letters that appear directly before "wikipedia.org" in the URL bar.
  • For example, if you look now you can see that there's an "en" before "wikipedia.org in "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Julius_Barclay". On the Italian Wikipedia article you translated from, you can see the URL starts with "it.wikipedia.org". Those are the two letters we're looking for!
7. Save your edits!
8. (Optional) Add a {{translated page}} template to the talk page of the article in question, if you translated more than a page or so. This makes it easier for others to trace where the text came from, but it is completely optional.
