MSU Interview

Dear It Is Me Here,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:04, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

User talk:Mjsfencing

I've noticed that you deleted a user talk page at User talk:Mjsfencing. Just so you know, we don't usually delete user talk pages, per WP:DELTALK. At least one of the reasons for this is so that a warning remains for the person to know why their page was deleted, so they won't do that again or leave Wikipedia in complete confusion.--Slon02 (talk) 19:57, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

It was a G11 though; I thought you deleted them if they were only created by the user as adverts? It Is Me Here t / c 09:57, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Muhammad GAR

Hi, just remembering that I promised to let you know once the Muhammad arbitration had ended. It actually ended a couple of weeks ago; editors are presently trying to set up a community RfC on image selection and placement: see Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal/Cases/11_February_2012/Muhammad-images.

I am in two minds as to whether a GAR should start before or after that effort is concluded. Input from GAR regulars and other previously uninvolved editors might be very valuable. On the other hand, given that editors have asked MedCab for help in drafting the RfC, I am not sure it is a good idea to have the article subject to both GAR and mediation at the same time ... Cheers, --JN466 09:05, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

I would rather that all image issues were (finally) settled before looking at content. Because with a GAR for this page, as far as I can see, criteria 5 and 6 would be effectively overridden by these considerations, so there is no real point coming to some decision from a GAC 6 point of view, only to have that overturned by the RfC. User script listing cleanup project

I'm leaving this message for known script authors, recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts, and those who've shown interest in user scripts.

This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.

If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 04:51, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)

Help us develop better software!

Thanks to all of you for commenting on the NOINDEX RfC :). It's always great to be able to field questions like these to the community; it's genuinely the highlight of my work! The NOINDEX idea sprung from our New Page Triage discussion; we're developing a new patrolling interface for new articles, and we want your input like never before :). So if you haven't already seen it, please go there, take a look at the screenshots and mockups and ideas, and add any comments or suggestions you might have to the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 16:44, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool

Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.

For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:18, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

{{db-meta}}

Thanks for the note and for the quick revert. I'm sorry for causing the mess — if you check the diff, my edit summary is a good explanation. I simply failed to realise that this would tag all of the templates for deletion, and because I was unaware of the sandbox, I couldn't benefit from it. Nyttend (talk) 02:06, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Template or markup for scansion?

Hello, IIMH. Because of this discussion I've begun thinking about how verse scansion on Wikipedia might be improved. One possibility is implementing the scansion within a template or markup. (This has to do with requiring monospace, but <tt></tt> seemingly not working properly with line-initial spaces, plus an aesthetic dislike by some for the gray-box formatting.) My sense is that the line-initial-space style (as I used in the discussion) may well be the easiest and best method, but I don't want to ignore other possibilities (and maybe there are others existing that I'm not aware of). Might you (or someone you know) be willing to discuss pros, cons, abilities, limitations with me in the future? This is certainly not in a "work order" phase yet... just spitballing. Thanks much. Phil wink (talk) 22:02, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Er I'm not sure I can really help you, being neither a template expert nor an English Literature expert. I was just looking for an automated solution from BOTREQ (to save having to do it myself) to change the markup of sonnets as a whole; I don't really know anything about syllable marks. If you are looking for a technically-minded Wikipedian, Anomie (talk · contribs) is one of the best I've encountered personally; or you could look in Category:Wikipedia_bot_owners, Category:User_template_coder-3 (and up to -5), or similar. For English Lit experts, I suggest searching WikiProject member lists. Sorry! It Is Me Here t / c 12:59, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Avicennasis

It has been pointed out in the !votes and I had a similar thought when I read it, that your nomination statement is a bit misleading. Your statement makes it appear that Avicennasis has been actively editing since 2006; however, active edits did not begin until 2010. Would you care to discuss it with Avicennasis and strike/modify your nomination accordingly? Ryan Vesey Review me! 19:03, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Oh, sorry; that's what you get for doing research with POPUPS, I suppose! Is the etiquette normally to edit the nomination like you would an article, or to leave the old wording there, but struck through? It Is Me Here t / c 22:37, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
I haven't seen a similar event, but I am almost certain that striking would be uncontroversial while replacing the text would cause some problems. If you did just replace it, editors who already commented on it would cause confusion. Personally I would leave a note using <small></small> right after the sentence about when editing began, clearing the issue up. Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:48, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Odd--you don't know how to read someone's edit history or how to start an RfA, but you're really good at getting a request for arbitration going. Great work. Drmies (talk) 22:25, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Drmies, it makes sense to focus on recent edit history rather than the earliest and I think your comment was unnecessary. Lets let this entire thing drop now. Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:31, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Recent edit history is that MF is gone. So I don't think my comment was unnecessary, no. We have an administrator here with less than 10,000 edits assisting in driving away an editor who has done ten times that. Why would I drop this? We have hypocrisy all around ("obnoxious assholery", anyone?), at least two admins starting ANI and AE threads, and for what? "Disruption"? That was not disruption. It is me here, you have done us all a disservice. Drmies (talk) 22:40, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Malleus will be back, pointing fingers solves no problems. The ANI thread has been closed, and I don't think the AE thread will come to much. Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:45, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
So you say. And in the meantime we all look like morons, esp. the three admins who are pushing that AE, but by extension me too. Drmies (talk) 22:49, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
If Malleus has indeed left the building, I want the credit...I know at least 100 users that will smile about it. I could care less if Malleus wrote a new FA everyday...its not worth putting up with his nonsense...and he and his posse have driven editors away... ( User:Pedro)...we'll give you credit for looking like a moron if you want...you deserve something too afterall.MONGO 06:48, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Can everyone just stop being ridiculous? Sheesh, we're acting like a bunch of kids. "I want him gone-he's mean". Honestly. You're right, Malleus can be difficult to work with, I have found it possible to avoid him except in RfA. If Malleus was writing an FA every day, the project would benefit greatly. Isn't that what this is about, improving the encyclopedia? Malleus is troublesome in the background areas of Wikipedia, but he is clearly a net positive, and he's beyond a net positive. He is one of the most prolific content creators we have. Ryan Vesey Review me! 13:57, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
He's not "mean"...he's vicious....the man and the his cadre have repeated played gang warfare on a series of editors and admins for some time now...they have made repeated threats to have admins desysopped, have stalked them to unrelated areas of this website and shown up in mass to vote! In chorus with each other like thugs. I'm not saying Malleus and company plan or orchestrate such things offsite, but there is a sickening group think amongst these editors that seems to revolve around Malleus, whether that is his objective or not. I've fired people that were otherwise doing fine jobs if they were impossible to work with or had other severe personality disorders. Malleus has been given more chances than anyone I can think of to start acting like an adult...he has failed miserably each time.MONGO 14:34, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

RfA start date

I just wanted to say I'm sorry for not catching the incorrect year mentioned above. I don't know why the alarm bells didn't go off in my head - somehow I managed to overlook it - and I want to apologize for any damage to your reputation that my oversight may have caused. I hope that the community will allow me to take the blame, as I was the one who signed off on the nomination without thinking to correct it. Again, I am truly sorry for issues that have sprung up around my RfA and this simple mistake. Avicennasis @ 08:25, 5 Sivan 5772 / 08:25, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

That's OK, I don't hold it against you. Sorry your RfA wasn't successful. It Is Me Here t / c 20:29, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Inappropriate username User:Lol ur mom is my mom

Hello It Is Me Here, i read your comment at Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention and while i agree that this user's edits have been useful, but not all. Like the one they made on 24th century was clearly incorrect. Furthermore i don't think that these types of user names ever had or will ever be acceptable on Wikipedia as no matter whether this a positive contributor or a disruptive user, username is clearly offensive in nature. Thank you. TheGeneralUser (talk) 10:24, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Jill Farrant

Thanks for the input on the Jill Farrant page. I'll try to dig up some additional articles that I can pull information from for the article. I'm trying not to go too much into detail on her scientific work, since the resurrection plants page covers that. But, I'm sure I can find some more tidbits that may warrant being added. OK. As I say, there's nothing wrong with the article, just that in my opinion its size warrants an assessment by WSS. It Is Me Here t / c 19:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Liquid Foundation

Fair enough, but the Foundation (cosmetics) wiki here already includes extensive talk about liquid foundation. Surely it does not need its own wiki article as all of the information on this new page could be added to the Foundation page under Formulation. Toasty (talk) 15:36, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Hang on, we are confusing two different things here. There is a difference between saying that an article does not qualify for speedy deletion, and saying that its deletion will almost certainly not be agreed to by any process. Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion in particular are very narrow and are only meant to apply in unambiguous cases, since articles that go through the process will typically only be looked at by a few people before a decision is made. The particular criterion you used – A3 – stipulates that the article must contain "no content", which means just that. Since the article already contained paragraphs of prose—i.e. of prose of some kind, never mind that it might overlap with another article, or any other matter—it did not qualify.
Now, to say that an article is not eligible for a particular kind of (or any kind of) speedy deletion is not the same as saying that there is no discussion whatsoever to be had as to whether it should be kept, deleted or merged. It is just that another avenue is more appropriate: namely, one where a larger number of editors will get to read and appraise the article before a decision is taken, since the case is not unambiguous one way or the other. The full details are on the page Wikipedia:Deletion process, but what I would say is that your suggestion to merge isn't unreasonable; just it's not one that is supposed to be settled by one editor. Hence, the best avenue for you is Articles for Deletion. You will see further instructions there. I hope that helps. It Is Me Here t / c 16:08, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the info, I will agree that I marked it wrong according to the A3 standard. Sorry for the confusion. Toasty (talk) 17:09, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

The article also exists on the Thai Wikipedia, but for some reason my computer does NOT like that template (seems to always crash with it, and two others). Also, on the Thai WP it is not the best article either. If you could go take another look at it I'd appreciate it. Thanks, gwickwire | Leave a message 16:19, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Total War:Rome 2 page issue

I (we) have an issue on Total War: Rome 2 page. Since I've seen you edit the page I've decided to ask you for your opinion on the matter. Since the developer interview video was released, with dev revealing in the video more info on the release date and sys reqs., I've edited the Rome 2's page to the aforementioned info (with refs included to the exact point where the info is mentioned in the video). The issue is several users have been constantly undoing my revision (they both have few overall wiki contribs, and they might even be the same person). Could you please help me out, and decide which info should be present on the page?

Thanks, Bihseth t / c 07:36, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

OK, I've replied on the article's talk page. It Is Me Here t / c 16:42, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Your opinion is much appreciated, thanks. I've edited the page according to your suggestions. The last thing I want to do is vandalize the article. Could you please just monitor the article as an admin for the next few days, just to avoid the eventual vandalisation.

Peterborough Council election, 2012

Hello. Regarding your edit summary, the other page shows the election results under the political control and district elections sections. Cheers, Chrisieboy (talk) 12:51, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

You may well have a case there for turning the page into a redirect, but I would still advise taking it to AfD because A10 talks about "recently created" articles only – i.e. if the page is to be made into a redirect, it shouldn't be done by speedy deletion. I normally take housekeeping/subpage deletions at face value since they are rarely problematic, but this looks like one where I should have checked the history. Restored and detagged now.
