Help with date unlinking

Installation and usage of date-autoformatting removal script

Instructions for installation

• EITHER: If you have a monobook already, go to it, click "edit this page", and paste in this string underneath your existing script:

importScript('User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js');

• OR: If you don't have a monobook.js page, create one using this title:

[[User:[your username]/monobook.js]]

Then click on "edit this page" and paste in at the top the "importScript" string you see three lines above here.

• Hit "Save page".
• Refresh your cache (instructions at top of monobook).
• You're ready to start.

Applying the script—it's very simple

• Go to an article and determine whether US or international format is used. (For this purpose, it's best to have selected "no preferences" for dates in your user preferences, which will display the raw date formats that our readers see. Otherwise, you'll need to check in edit mode.) Occasionally, you'll see that the wrong format is used (check MOSNUM's guidance on this carefully).
• Click on "edit this page". You'll see the list of script commands under "what links here". Click on either "delink all dates to dmy" (international format) or "delink all dates to mdy" (US format).
• The diff will automatically appear. Check through the changes you're making before saving them. If there are problems, fix them manually before saving, or cancel.
• Leave a note at the article talk page if editors need to negotiate which format to use, or need to be alerted to any other date-related issues.
• Click on "Save page": it's done.

Afterwards

• Respond politely and promptly to any critical comments on your talk page. If someone wants to resist or revert, it's better to back down and move on to improve other articles where WPians appreciate your efforts. NEVER edit-war over date autoformatting; raise the issue at WT:MOSNUM.

Notes

• [1] Treats only square-bracketed dates. The script removes square brackets only, which mostly involves the main text and footnotes; it's acceptable for citation-generated dates to be of a different format, particularly ISO (which must not be used in the main text).
• [2] Piped year-links ([[1989 in baseball|1989]]). On purpose, the script will not touch these.
• [3] Date-sorting templates in tables. As of August 23, a minor tweak must be made to the script (which will update automatically), to deal with the column-sorting template in tables. Please be aware of this in relation to Featured Lists and the like (i.e., hold off there until it's fixed). The "dts" and "dts2" templates are at issue, and can be identified in display mode by a small clickable item at the top of a column. This should be fixed soon.
• [4] Antiquity-related articles. Articles on topics such as ancient Rome should be treated with caution, since the script removes year-links as well, and some editors may argue that there's a case for retaining the simple year and century links from ancient times (e.g., 212). It's better to ask first in these cases. In any case, such articles contain few if any full dates.

No problem. Unfortunately, there is large ruckus about date unlinking despite the consensus formed months ago. There are quite a few editors on the prowl for those who are unlinking dates. I have already been taken to to AN/3RR for my date unlinkings. I would recommend not unlinking dates until this ruckus dies down. Your input at this RfC would be great. I'm afraid that I'm only able to copy and paste complicated bits of code; I can't really create something from scratch based on someone's idea or suggestion. Inkscape as an external editor for SVG files

In my search for whether it is possible, I noticed your question in:

• Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 43#External editors

If you are still interested, see the following if you have not already:

• Mediawiki#Rich content: "MediaWiki also has a simple interface to allow the transparent use of external editors for uploaded files and wiki pages."
• Commons:File:MediaWikiExternalEditorImage.png: the history starts with: "Image editing with the new external editor feature of MediaWiki 1.5."
• mw:Manual:External editors - but it looks like you may have already tried this.

In any case, the answer you received that external editors are only for text editing appears to contradict what I'm seeing about the possibility of using Inkscape to edit SVG files. I have not tried to set this up yet. --Teratornis (talk) 05:41, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

I think that only articles that have only ever contained unsuitable content should be deleted; those that have degenerated or been vandalised can just be restored to an earlier version instead of being deleted. As for protection, I'm no expert myself, but I have never come across indefinite full protection for articles, only ever for high-visibility templates and things. Thus, as long as it expires at some point, I'm appeased. :) It Is Me Here ^{t / c} 12:37, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

My RfA Thank you for participating in my "RecFA", which passed with a final tally of 153/39/22. There were issues raised regarding my adminship that I intend to cogitate upon, but I am grateful for the very many supportive comments I received and for the efforts of certain editors (Ceoil, Noroton and Lar especially) in responding to some issues. I wish to note how humbled I was when I read Buster7's support comment, although a fair majority gave me great pleasure. I would also note those whose opposes or neutral were based in process concerns and who otherwise commented kindly in regard to my record. I recognise that the process itself was unusual, and the format was generally considered questionable - and I accept that I was mistaken in my perception of how it would be received - but I am particularly grateful for those whose opposes and neutrals were based in perceptions of how I was not performing to the standards expected of an administrator. As much as the support I received, those comments are hopefully going to allow me to be a better contributor to the project. Thank you. Very much. Your comments on an article

Your comments concerning an article you removed tags against PimpMyNumber. The user User:Kbrose is constantly edititing this page without just cause whilst refusing to use the discussion page after your comment when you disagreed with the speedy delete. Can it be requested the article is locked from editing until the discussion is finalised so that this user does not constantly make the changes without any reason. I have left a full explantion on the articles discussion page. The user Kbrose is not a new user, I beleive Nov 2007, yet he/she is adding Speedy Delete and other tags to a vast number of pages without actually giving any reasons into it. Slight mistake

Just spotted a slight mistake you made, nothing major, just thought I'd point it out to you to let you know about it in future. You recently deleted Unaccompanied child under G1 (nonsense). Although the page likely was patent nonsense, this does not mean that it meets G1 (which is confusing), because G1 doesn't apply to pages which are vandalism (or a blatant hoax), and is rather for pages with content such as "dfgsdfdsf", a better appraoch with this page may have been to delete it under G3 (vandalism) or to prod it as WP:NOTDIC or/and WP:NEO (although I didn't really have time to read it properly).

Sorry if that sounds a bit stupid and/or "wants everything perfect". I don't care at all if you do an IAR G1 delete. But just thought I should point this out to you for future. Cheers - Kingpin¹³ (talk) 18:57, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Այբուբեն

The article Այբուբեն has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I really don't know if there is a policy against it, but is English Wikipedia supposed to host articles with names consisting entirely of text in a foreign alphabet?

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. I don't think there's a rule against it (see იოსებ ჯუღაშვილი for a similar example), and WP:IAR in reverse would suggest that deleting a page if that deletion does not help Wikipedia would not be advisable. In any case, I would rather you took this to AFD if you want to press on with this matter, as it is not straightforward enough for a PROD, I would say.
