Heritage canal locks etc
Hi, I noticed your addition of Category:Grade II listed canals to Bath Locks and have added a few more from List of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal to the relevant cats; however can you advise what to do about Monkey Marsh Lock which is not listed but is an ancient monument and I can't see a relevant category for that?— Rod talk 13:27, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Categorisation policy for churches
Hello Hugo999, I have a question that I cannot find an answer to on any of the Wikipedia Manual of Style pages and considering your fantastic work on categorising Church-based articles, thought you might know. Is there a policy on how articles on churches are to be sorted in category pages?
For example, if an article was called, St John Church, London, would it be sorted as: London, St John Church, or John Church, London, or London, John Church or just remain as it is? Up to now I had always thought that, in most categories, e.g. listed churches, it would be: London, St John Church - just from looking at how most of the categories were already sorted.
Sorry to be a pedant about this, but a new user has come along and has sorted a lot of church-based articles to: John Church, London, and now I not sure what is the right way. No, unfortunately I don’t know of any rules or guidelines for sorting church names. Using Hotcat I left the article sort by name as they were previously, as you say there is not one method used. I did alter 14th -century architecture (say) to 14th-century church buildings; and add some county categories by denomination where missin; eg CofE or RC churches in Fooshire’ Hugo999 (talk) 04:20, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote
Hi Hugo999. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Just a quick question about this category. All the articles you've sorted into it don't really fit as "proposed" - they're in the final stages of construction, to open on March 28. Is there a better category for this, or does Wikipedia use "proposed" until the infrastructure actually opens? (My categorization work is mostly limited to Commons). - Suggest maintain both categories because are more general. There are the same categories for Africa, Europea, Asia and so on. Also, in both categories are article from both parts of America, North and South. - I don’t see any need for an intermediate category for XXX in the Americas as these category trees would differ from all the other ones which don’t have such a category, and which would also complivate the subcategories for Central America and the Caribbean, which are subcategories of North America. - It depends on the continent concept. Some people think that America is a continent, other ones think that are two (in a similar way to other parts of the Earth). Trams and rail

- Hi there: Wellington New Zealand has an extensive electric suburban rail network on four lines north, with electric power largely renewable from hydroelectricity, plus some geothermal and more recently wind power. Only the rail link to the Wairarapa (and freight trains) are diesel-powered. But public transport in the central city, south and some northern suburbs is by bus, mainly diesel. There are electric trolley buses to some suburbs (they replaced electric trams in 1964) and the Regional Council (which is responsible for public transport in the region) wants to replace them with diesel buses as the power feeder network is due for replacement. Then supposedly by battery-electric buses, although with the weight of batteries they would be rather a liability on some of the hill routes. Football leagues in Asia, Africa by season
Re Re the category Category:Football leagues in Asia by season , what format should they be? Either Category: 2008–09 Asian association football leagues or Category: 1934–35 Asian domestic association football leagues. Either OK to me, perhaps the latter, but they should be the same throughout the main category. I was creating some more, and then noticed the variation between seasons.
- Difficult to know which title is best, should be shortest possible I think. Category titles can get a little longwinded. I would favour something like "20xx-xx in Asian football leagues" Djln --Djln (talk) 14:21, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I favour shorter category titles and "domestic" seems unnessary for the Asian, African and European league subcategories, though perhaps in line with the European categories how about retaining “association and having and "20xx-xx in African association football leagues". and "20xx-xx in Asian association football leagues". This would mean changing the African categories to omit “domestic” and adding "in" to all the Asian categories. plus removing “domestic” to the earlier ones. Asian football
Hi Hugo, what's your opinion on "20xx in Asian football" verses "200x-x0 in Asian football". Should be one or the other I think, but not both. Asian Champions League is played in a calendar year but lots of domestic Asian leagues seems are played in 200x-x0 format. Djln --Djln (talk) 12:37, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
- Inclined to agree for all ie Asian, African and European seasons to be in either "20xx in Asian football" or "20xx-yy in Asian football" depending on what that country uses; with the overall category "20xx-yy in Asian football" as a subcategory of the consecutive categories "20xx in Asian football" and "20yy in Asian football". Categorisation
You might want to slow down a bit. Creating large numbers of categories that contain only one article (and have little chance of containing any more than one or two articles) is not good practice. See WP:SMALLCAT for guidance. Sionk (talk) 22:15, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
New Zealand general election, 1987
Long time no speak; I hope you are well. This edit caught my attention, as it's unusual for a 1986 book to provide a reference for the 1987 election. Hence, I got the book in question off the shelf and what it does say on page 371 is that Kynoch was the unsuccessful Hastings candidate in the 1981 election. Bots
You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.
What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.
This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.
If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!
- The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary.
- Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly.
Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.
Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.
Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Hello! I am working on the Russian version "Burnside High School" article, which currently has short history section in wikipedia. I am writing you to ask - is there a possibility for you to visit a National Library at Welligton and obtain an electronic copy of book "Choosing the right path : Burnside High School 1960-2010 / Paul O'Connor" (http://natlib.govt.nz/records/21643829), and put some information into the article? Also I can buy a hard copy of that book. Could you give me an advice, if it's possible? I'll be happy to get any version and any part of that book. - Hi Voyagerim: Will look at the book next Friday at the copy in the National Library, Wellington. Published c2009 according to the listing (despite having 2010 in the title!) probably by a Christchurch bookshop so do not know whether copies would be avaliable now. Likewise re the earlier c1985 book/booklet about the school. PS: The English Wikipedia article seems fairly comprehensive, did you want more details? curious why a Christchurch high (secondary) school has an article on the Russian Wikipedia! - Possibly no as the category Category:Australian real estate agents is not part of a category by nationality with other nationalities, and the category Category:Australian real estate businesspeople is broader. But there are American and Canadian subcategories in Category:Realtors; and categories for Category:Real estate brokers and Category:Estate agents (people) (which seems to be largely but not entirely British). How about separate categories Category:British real estate agents (new) and Category:Australian real estate agents as subcategories with American and Canadian realtors of Category:Realtors and real estate agents by country/nationality (ie retaining local usage of either realtors or real estate agents). People in the category Category:Real estate brokers could be absorbed into one of these categories; for Americans either Category:American real estate businesspeople (mostly) or Category:American realtors. I could write a proposal for “Categories for discussion” along those lines. NB: The New Zealand Yellow Pages category is “Real estate agents and consultants” though not enough to have a NZ Wikipedia category. For companies there is Category:Real estate companies by country. Edit on Gun-type nuclear weapon
I was wondering if you had a source that contradicted that the Soviet Union had not built a gun-type bomb. Your edit here seems to indicate that you feel they did? Or was that a copyedit? Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 02:48, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- Re my edit that the Soviets like Britain never built a gun-type atomic bomb, the first Soviet Joe-1 of 1949 was a plutonium implosion bomb (possibly from Groves, will check), though it may be difficult to prove that the Soviets NEVER built a gun-type bomb. The US did have some gun-type uranium bombs apart from the artillery weapons, they were "bunker-buster" bombs which had to penetrate the ground.
