A lengthy welcome

edit

Hi Hanren1. Welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you don't mind if I share some of my thoughts on starting out as a new editor on Wikipedia: If I could get editors in your situation to follow just one piece of advice, it would be this: Learn Wikipedia by working only on non-contentious topics until you have a feel for the normal editing process and the policies that usually come up when editing casually. You'll find editing to be fun, easy, and rewarding. The rare disputes are resolved quickly and easily in collaboration.

Working on biographical information about living persons is far more difficult. Wikipedia's Biographies of living persons policy requires strict adherence to multiple content policies, and applies to all information about living persons including talk pages.

If you have a relationship with the topics you want to edit, then you will need to review Wikipedia's Conflict of interest policy, which may require you to disclose your relationship and restrict your editing depending upon how you are affiliated with the subject matter. Regardless, editing in a manner that promotes an entity or viewpoint over others can appear to be detrimental to the purpose of Wikipedia and the neutrality required in articles.

Some topic areas within Wikipedia have special editing restrictions that apply to all editors. It's best to avoid these topics until you are extremely familiar with all relevant policies and guidelines.

If you work from reliable, independent sources, you shouldn't go far wrong. WP:RSP and WP:RSN are helpful in determining if a source is reliable.

I hope you find some useful information in all this, and welcome again. --Hipal (talk) 01:52, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cut and paste moves

edit

In short, don't. Articles can be renamed/moved properly, complete with their talk pages and attribution history. WP:CUTPASTE explains some of the reasons why you don't take the content of one article and slap it into a different article. Go to WP:RM if you want to move a page and don't have the necessary rights to do it yourself. It explains how to start a move discussion, which is a good idea except in the most obvious cases. Last suggestion, if you don't know what your doing or even if you do and someone appears to object, discuss first.

Now, specific to Xiangyun. There are at least three possible subjects for this title, listed as a disambiguation page because none of them are obviously a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. What makes you think your brand new article is overwhelmingly more popular and of longstanding relevance compared to all the others? Because that's the hurdle you have to overcome if you want to overwrite the dab page. And more, because it has been in place for some time and may be linked from any number of places. Create your article under a different title. Or create it in draft and start a discussion about what title it should be moved to. I'm a huge fan of not having a dab page every time someone can imagine two alternatives, but in this case I really don't see a primary topic and I certainly don't see it being your new article. However, feel free to start a discussion if you feel everything should be moved out of the way for the new article. Just don't cut and paste it into a different title.
